Henry David Thoreau is one of the most influential writers in the North American tradition. His passages about nature have inspired generations of environmentalists and literature lovers, while his political thought has been branded as anarchist and claimed by different social movements. This article looks at Thoreau's political philosophy in order the reconstruct the components of his patriotic thinking. A parallelism can be drawn between the theoretical construction of nationalism in the United States and among the Romantics of continental Europe, while divergences between the two processes cannot be overlooked. An explicit examination of Thoreau's patriotism can open new lines of research, such as the relationship between ecosystem and human communities, and their operationalization in the collective imaginary.
