The high speed railway line Madrid-Extremadura crosses over the Almonte River at its arrival at Alcantara reservoir through a viaduct that consists of a large arch bridge of high strength concrete with superior deck and 384 m main span. That span will turn the bridge in 2015, when it is scheduled to be completed, into the largest arch bridge for high-speed railway in the world. Because of this uniqueness, a number of specific verifications and analysis are necessary to address its design and construction. Major design decisions are described in this article, including the choice of typology, obtaining of the antifunicular form for the arch, wind analysis and wind tunnel studies, and complex nonlinear time dependent models analysis.
