Through a literature/newspaper inquiry, this research seeks to answer the question: How to offer a synthetic elementary definition of Vernacular Photography that includes commonalities in concepts by specialized authors, galleries, and museums interested in this iconographic genre? Twenty-five definitions of Vernacular Photography were analyzed to answer this question, choosing 13 from the last ten years that were issued by prestigious academics interested in this genre, such as Geoffrey Batchen and Clément Chéroux, or institutions with Vernacular Photography collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Swann Galleries. Studying these definitions has allowed us to find convergent and divergent elements to propose an integrating defining concept. To speak of Juan Rulfo is to exalt a literary figure, whose fame crossed borders with only two books, Pedro Páramo and El llano en llamas. In these volumes the national aspect appeared as an obligatory reference. However, there is another area in Rulfo’s work where the aesthetics of photography come to the fore. Despite his artistic quality, he considered himself an amateur photographer; he never wanted to share credits with the great masters of that time in México, such as Lola or Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Nacho López or Kati Horna. Locating his images together with his literature gives us an enriched vision of Rulfo. The article analyzes the use of images and photographs in Clorinda Matto de Turner's travel book, "Viaje de recreo" (Recreational Journey). It highlights the use of images provided by the Alinari brothers' photographic studio, which portray empty and inactive spaces in Italy. Matto establishes connections between Europe and America through references to the Roman and Inca empires. Additionally, the relationship between the photographs of the Roman Colosseum and Matto's writing is examined, as well as her critique of modernity and focus on the role of women. There are different elements that compose any photographic narrative. By identifying and assessing them clearly, one is able to find the traces of pioneering ideas stated by Ripa, Warburg and Eisner. Their visual image theories and interpretations paved the way for our understanding of the underlying elements that characterize photography during early 21st century. Advances in new digital technologies have led to the blossoming of a great variety of techniques for analysing art objects, as well as other elements of material culture. This article outlines a digital study of the artistic technique employed by Canarian naturalist Domingo Bello y Espinosa (1817-1884) in his notebook Álbum Pintoresco de Canarias (1879, whereby digital photography has offered an initial approach to his technique of scientific illustration. This article is part of the European Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe (MiCreate) project. The text is intended to a) explore and describe how young migrants describe their experiences and life trajectories through artistic methods; b) investigate how the students' subjectivities in transit blur socio-cultural, political and identity barriers; and c) question the notion of migrant childhood from a critical perspective. To do so, we focus on three situations that occurred during our fieldwork in public schools in Barcelona, conducted in two stages. The first stage consisted of an ethnographic approach that included participant observation, interviews and conversation groups with the educational community of each school (teachers, families and neighborhood organizations). The second stage involved meetings with groups of students aged 10 to 12, in which different artistic methods were used (life lines, cartographies, interactive narration, video stories, drawings and subjective photography) in order to create spaces for relationships that would trigger their biographical narratives. The contribution of this study lies in the fact that it allows us to focus on children's subjectivity and authorship in migration studies and to account for how they live their subjectivities in transit, confront their multiple identities, and give meaning to their transnational experiences.
