Background: Postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans is a rare lung disease; there are limited reports in South America. Case report: We report 10 patients with this disease diagnosed at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño-Breña (Lima-Peru). The median age at diagnosis was 19 months and all patients had a history of severe acute respiratory infection. The most frequent symptoms were cough, respiratory distress, wheezing, and hypoxemia. The mosaic attenuation pattern was the most frequent on the tomography. All the patients had positive serology for adenovirus. The treatment received was methylprednisolone pulses, azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine, and inhaled corticosteroids. No patient died during the follow-up. Conclusions: In previously healthy children with a history of severe acute respiratory infection and persistent bronchial obstructive symptoms, the diagnosis of postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans should be considered. This is the first report in Peru with a therapeutic regimen adapted to our institution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Reveal adenoviruses (AdV) that cause pneumonia in sheep and examine pathologic changes in the pulmonary and mediastinal lymph nodes of naturally infected adenovirus-positive specimens. Material and methods. For this purpose, 1459 lungs of sheep slaughtered in a slaughterhouse were macroscopically examined, and pneumonia lesions were detected in 88 (6.03%) of these. The paraffinized tissue sections of these specimens with pneumonia were examined with the immunohistochemical (IHC) and indirect immunofluorescence (IF) methods, whereas their tissue homogenates were examined using the Antigen ELISA and PCR methods for adenovirus positivity. Results. Accordingly, the prevalence of adenoviruses was determined as 19.3% for IHC, 22.7% for IF, 20.5% for ELISA and 13.6% for PCR. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was performed to examine histopathological changes in the specimens that were naturally infected with adenoviruses. The histopathological examinations of the naturally infected lung specimens revealed mainly interstitial pneumonia, as well as catarrhal and verminous pneumonia findings. Consequently, it was determined that the most effective methods in the detection of adenoviruses in sheep pneumonias were found respectively as IF, ELISA, IHC and PCR. The finding that adenoviruses were observed only in the mediastinal lymph nodes of some specimens in the immunopathological methods suggested that the latency. Conclusions. The presence of adenoviruses in sheep pneumonia cases was determined with the indirect immunofluorescence, antigen ELISA and PCR methods for the first time. INTRODUCTION: Acute Respiratory infection (ARI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide in pediatrics. The main etiological agents are respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus (PIV), influenza virus and adenovirus. Currently there are molecular diagnostic tests that have helped to identify unconventional agents. Our aim was to study the presence of: PIV, coronavirus (hCoV), rhinovirus (hRV) and human enterovirus (hEV), by using Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) in samples of hospitalized children on Carlos Van Buren Hospital negative to immunofluorescence (IF) for respiratory viruses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 82 nasopharyngeal aspirate samples, negative to IF, were collected from children under five years old hospitalized due to ARI at Carlos Van Buren Hospital, between December 2011 and March 2012. A Multiplex nested RT-PCR designed for the specifically detection of PIV (1, 2, 3, 4AB), hCoV (OC43 and 229E) and generic detection of RV and EV was used. RESULTS: Parainfluenza was the most frequently identified virus (n=9, 10%) specifically PIV-2 (n=2, 2%), PIV-3 (n=6, 7%) and PIV-4AB (n=1, 1%). Followed by hRV and hEV (n=5, 6%) and hCoV-OC43 (n=2, 2%). There were no co-infections with two or more viruses. There was no correlation between age and type of infection. DISCUSSION: This study described the prevalence of these respiratory viruses in pediatric patients with ARI. It was possible to detect false negative results for parainfluenza virus and also to demonstrate the existence of hCoV, hRV and hEV in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Identify early adenoviruses in children with acute gastroenteritis. Methods: Retrospective study that included patients under 16 years with diagnosis of infectious gastroenteritis in a four year period, 1619 subjects were found; 501 were tested for adenoviruses in stool. Results: The frequency of adenoviruses was 9.9%. The disease prevailed in infants. It had a subacute evolution, mainly found in spring; the most characteristic symptom was a profuse, watery and mucous diarrhea with mean duration of 4 days. Vomiting was present in 40 (80%) patients and was brief but intense half the patients presented fever, abdominal pain and bloating. Only one presented with severe dehydration. Normal leukocyte count with monocitosis and lymphocytosis were mainly observed in the CBC. Conclusion: adenoviruses are important causal agents of acute gastroenteritis in children under two years. Rapid stool test helps us have a precocious diagnosis and avoid antibiotic overuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. The significance of AdV infection in immunocompromised patients has been firmly established. These infections have the potential to cause disseminated disease with high mortality rates, and the clinical management of infected patients is a major problem. Objective. To research the role of Adenovirus in Respiratory Infections in HIV-infected Cuban patients, and to characterize the isolates obtained in species and serotypes using Molecular Biology techniques. Materials and Methods. 21 samples of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from HIV-positive patients with respiratory symptoms of prolonged evolution with uncertain etiology, in which there was a predominance of chronic pneumonia were researched. In spite of antibiotic therapy, their problems remained unresolved. The initial diagnoses were performed by PCR and viral cultures. The identification and typing of AdV isolates were achieved by PCR. Other respiratory pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi were also investigated. Results. In 10 (48%) out of the 21 samples the presence of AdV was detected, and the virus was isolated in 7 of them (70%). Pneumonia was the predominant clinical manifestation (50 % of the cases).The AdV found belonged to species B (28%) and C (71%), type 3 and types 1 and 2, respectively. In 80% of the cases, only AdV was found, and in 20% AdV was found together with bacteria. Conclusions. Adenoviruses were identified as causative for respiratory infections in HIV-positive patients, particularly the B and C species. For that reason, including them in diagnostic testing would be useful in treating and managing HIV patients with respiratory infections. Gene therapy as a therapeutic strategy for Heart Failure, is an area that within the last 10 years has experienced an important increase in research, becoming one of the most promising areas to obtain a successful therapy for heart failure due to the possibility of correcting the basic defects observed at the cellular level in this pathology. One of the first things to consider on the use of this therapy is the way to deliver the genetic material, Adenovirus, and Adeno-associated virus, have shown the best capabilities in the myocardium; the delivery by local means has shown best results when compared with peripheral administration. Multiple physiopathological mechanisms susceptible of modifying by gene therapy have been identified, including the regulation of Ca2+ fluxes during excitation-contraction coupling, altered intracellular signalling, and adrenergic system, blockade of apoptosis and angiogenesis. Adenovirus isolated from Mexican patients with Acute Respiratory Infection Introduction. Adenoviruses are responsible for at least 5% of acute respiratory infections world wide. Regularly, they produce self-limited middle respiratory tract infections. Depending on the type of infecting adenovirus and the immunological status of the patient, adenoviral infection may result in high morbidity of respiratory diseases. Objective. To identify the adenovirus type from isolates of patients with acute respiratory infection. Material and Methods. In order to isolate the adenovirus agent, samples of respiratory secretion were inoculated into HEP-2 cells. Detection of adenoviral isolation was done by indirect immunofluorescence. Adenoviral typing was done by restriction enzyme analysis using the enzymes Eco-RI, Hind-III, Bgl-II and Sma-I (RFLP). Results. A total of 118 samples were analysed, of which 22% were identified as adenovirus positive by specific immunofluorescence. The RFLP pattern allowed the typing of Ad1 in 4 samples, Ad2 in 6 samples and 17 samples had the type Ad5. Conclusions. We are reporting for the first time the presence of Ad1, Ad2, and Ad5 in patients with acute respiratory infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
