Background and aims: Gutierrezia is an American genus of Asteraceae, tribe Astereae, subtribe Solidagininae. A taxonomic revision of South American species of the genus was carried out, based on morphological data. M&M: To pursue our aim, an exhaustive bibliographic review was carried out, materials deposited in the main Herbaria were studied, the type specimens were consulted for nomenclatural purposes and collection trips were made. Results: In the framework of the revision of the genus Gutierrezia, 3 species and 2 varieties new to the science were described and 2 species were rehabilitated. Eight names were lectotypified and one neotype was designated. We concluded that genus Gutierrezia is composed of 34 species, 17 of which inhabit North America, and 17 species with 2 varieties, here described, in South America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taxonomic revision of Baccharis sect. Heterothalamus (Asteracerae: Astereae) in Uruguay. A taxonomic revision of Baccharis section Heterothalamus (Less.) Giuliano (Asteraceae: Astereae) for Uruguay is presented. Baccharis sect. Heterothalamus (Less) Giuliano is composed by Baccharis aliena (Spreng.) Joch. Müll. and Baccharis psiadioides (Less.) Joch. Müll., whose geographic distributions are mostly restricted to hilly areas. The genus Baccharis is represented in Argentina by 96 species, the infrageneric classification of which is presented in this paper. A succinct summary of the history of Baccharis infrageneric taxonomy is provided. The 96 Argentine species are placed into 15 sections: Angustifoliae, Aristidentes, Baccharis, Caulopterae, Cuneifoliae, Cylindricae, Discolores, Molinae, Nitidae, Oblongifoliae, Paniculatae, Pedicellatae, Pseudobaccharis, Subliguliflorae -sect. nov.- and Trinervatae. These sections are briefly described, and a key to differentiate them is given. Twelve out of the 96 species are positioned into the infrageneric classification system for the first time, whereas 42 species which had been previously classified are here relocated to other sections. Twenty-two generic, subgeneric, sectional and subsectional names are considered as new synonyms. The relationships among the sections are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
