MIDDLE-aged women , *MYOCARDIAL ischemia , *HYPERTENSION risk factors , *BODY mass index , *CORONARY disease - Abstract
Introduction: obesity is defined as the presence of an excessive quantity of corporal fat. Objective: to characterize middle-aged women according to nutritional assessment and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: descriptive, retrospective study in 180 middle-aged women from Santa Clara City from 2018 to 2021. Statistical analysis was performed in two stages: descriptive analysis (mean, median, and standard deviation) and inferential analysis (Chi-square [qualitative]). Results: overweight and obesity predominate, 43.89% have a body mass index corresponding to the overweight category and when classifying obesity 31.67% have class I obesity. As the body mass index increases, the frequency of risk factors increases: hypertension, smoking and ischemic heart disease. All the patients with overweight and obesity had an abdominal waist greater than 88 centimeters. Conclusions: Cardiometabolic risk markers were found in middle-aged women with overweight and obesity. Introduction: Introduction: severe obesity has had a greater increase than non-severe obesity in Chilean schoolchildren during the last years. We do not know whether the cut-off point currently used to define severe obesity in children (BMI ≥ + 3 DE, WHO-2007 curves) is associated with a greater biological risk in our population. Objective: to describe and compare cardiometabolic risk in schoolchildren with severe vs. non-severe obesity. Methods: a secondary analysis of a sample of 3,325 schoolchildren was performed, in which cardiometabolic risk factors were studied. The prevalence of these was compared in the subsample of 589 schoolchildren with obesity according to whether it was severe or not, and the respective ORs were calculated. Results: mean age was 11.4 ± 0.98 years, 46 % were girls, and 11.5 % of the sample had severe obesity, with a higher prevalence of most of the factors studied and no differences in chronic disease, obesity or education in parents, or physical activity of the child. The risk of those with severe obesity for central obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome reached an OR of 12.9, 3.2, 2.67, and 1.92, respectively, as compared to those with non-severe obesity. Conclusion: this definition of severe obesity in childhood favors the identification of children with higher cardiometabolic comorbidity, which allows to focus the efforts of secondary prevention and its most timely treatment. - Abstract
Background: peri- and post-menopausal women exhibit a high tendency towards obesity and visceral fat deposition, which increases cardiometabolic risk. Objective: to evaluate through a prospective nutritional study the effect of carotenoid consumption on cardiometabolic risk biomarkers in peri- and post-menopausal women.Material and Methods: twelve peri- and post-menopausal women without previous symptoms of cardiovascular disease, but with some cardiometabolic risk factor, were recruited. Their diet was supplemented during 4 weeks with orange-carrot juice, tomato juice, and boiled spinach, providing 415 mg of total carotenoids/week (carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein + zeaxanthin). At the beginning (TI) and at the end (TF) of the intervention period blood samples were drawn to measure biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial function biomarkers, and plasma carotenoid levels. Results: at TF a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index, and an increase in HDL-cholesterol were observed. Plasma carotenoids increased significantly (p < 0.05) from 0.56 µg/mL at TI to 1.22 µg/mL at TF. Concurrently, a shift in oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers was detected, with a decrease in plasma C-reactive protein and malonaldehyde levels, and an increase in adiponectin. However, endothelial dysfunction biomarkers (sVCAM and sICAM) and total antioxidant capacity remained unchanged. Conclusions: dietary supplementation with carotenoids leads to an increase in plasma carotenoids, a decrease in atherogenic dyslipidemia, and an improvement in oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers, which indicates a reduction in cardiometabolic risk. CYCLING , *YOUNG adults , *HEALTH , *PHYSICAL activity , *QUALITY of life , *HEART metabolism disorders - Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare perceived health outcomes in adult amateur endurance cyclists who practiced a high volume of training y inactive individuals. In 859 (751 men, 108 women) adult cyclists y 718 inactive subjects (307 men, 411 women), we examined current training status y perceived health outcomes including quality of life, quality of sleep, anxiety y depression y cardiometabolic risk: body mass index, physical activity, physical fitness, adherence to Mediterranean diet, y alcohol y tobacco consumption. Male y female cyclists reported significantly better perceived health outcomes than inactive control men y women, respectively, in all variables, except depression for both genders. The practice of high volume of amateur endurance cycling is a form of leisure-time physical activity recommended for healthy adults because it can produce a wide range of perceived health benefits. - Abstract
Background: the prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence in Spain is alarming. The high consumption of processed products of low nutritional quality but high caloric density, together with sedentary lifestyle, are two of the main causes. Objective: to know the nutritional status of a population of children and adolescents, and some of their eating habits, tastes and preferences, and physical activity practice. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study based on an anthropometric assessment and a survey on food habits and lifestyle in 1,939 schoolchildren between seven and 16 years of school age in the Community of Madrid. Updated indexes such as the body mass index (BMI) adapted according to the Cole cut-off points and the waist-height index (CTI), which have a high correlation with infant adiposity, are used. Results: the rates of overweight and obesity are high in both children and adolescents. It should be noted that abdominal obesity according to ICT represents a greater percentage than global obesity diagnosed with BMI (overweight + total obesity according to BMI: 27.23%, and according to ICT: 35.17%). The sedentariness is high (25.12%), as well as the consumption of highly caloric products, but of low nutritional value mainly at breakfast, mid-morning and snack. Conclusions: the prevalence of overweight and obesity is high, especially at the abdominal level, probably associated with the increasing consumption of ultra-processed products and the high rates of sedentary lifestyle. The conclusion is the need to develop programs to prevent obesity and nutritional education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BODY composition , *MILITARY training camps , *FAT , *TRIGLYCERIDES , *BODY mass index - Abstract
Antecedents: The atherogenic indices are biochemical indicators that are usually related to body fat and the development of cardio- metabolic diseases, which represent a serious problem in public health, not only because of the associated morbidity and mortality, but also due to the health costs involved, a situation that it isn't alien in the military population. Aim: To determine if the body mass index in overweight colombian cadets is due to lean or fat mass and if it is related to atherogenic indices. Materials and methods: Descriptive - observational study, in overweight cadets, assessed in the center of physical culture research (CICFI) of the Military School of cadets "General José María Córdova". For the analysis of the information the statistical package SPSS 24 was used, applying normality tests, descriptive statistics for normal behavior data and Pearson's correlation. Results: 90 cadets with an average age of 22.0 ± 3.0 years and a body mass index of 27.3 ± 1.8 kg / m2, 58.0% men and 32.0% women were included. The pre-erogenous index was related to the BMI (r = 0,305 p = 0,02), the Castelli index was weakly related to the body mass index (r = 0,254 p = 0,05). In no group, the ratio of triglycerides was related to BMI. Conclusions: The atherogenic indices in overweight cadets are in normal ranges and have weak relations with the body mass index. Overweight is due to greater lean mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHYSICAL activity , *METABOLIC syndrome - Abstract
Objective. To use a new methodology to classify the level of physical activity (PA) by combining the levels of PA and sedentary time (SED) in order to establish its association with metabolic syndrome (MS). Materials and methods. A representative sample of Chilean adults (≥18 years old) who participated in the National Health Survey (ENS 2009- 2010) was included in this study (n=5 040). Four categories were created using a combination of PA and SED levels through the GPAQ questionnaire. MS was defined according to the norms established by NCEP ATP-III. Results. A lower probability of MS was observed only in the categories that comply with the international recommendations of PA, "active and low-SED" (OR=0.72 [0.57 to 0.91]) and "active and high-SED" (OR=0.63 [0.49 to 0.81]). While the level of SED (high/low) was not associated with a significant reduction of MS in any of the groups. Conclusions. This type of classification demonstrates that the main strategy to reduce the risk of MS should be associated with compliance with the recommendations of PA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBESITY complications , *MYOCARDIAL infarction , *OBESITY , *RISK assessment , *CASE-control method , *WAIST-hip ratio - Abstract
Background: Obesity is a coronary risk factor associated to myocardial infarction although waist to-hip-ratio has shown higher predictive power. Objective: The aim of this study was a Receiver Operating Characteristic anthropometric analysis in infarcted males to identify the strength of association for simple measurements, obesity and indicators such as, waist to-hip-ratios, waist to-height-ratios and conicity index. Methods:Case-control study of myocardial infarction in European males. One hundred and twelve cases and 112 controls aged 30-74 years were enrolled. We measured weight, height, waist circumference, umbilical waist circumference and hip circumference. We calculated various anthropometric indicators. We obtained the areas under the ROC curves, the odds ratio and correlations for measurements and anthropometric indicators. Results: Body mass index [AUC: 0.686, 95% CI (0.616-0.755); OR: 3.3], waist circumference [AUC: 0.734, 95% CI (0.668-0.800); OR: 5.7], height [AUC: 0.623, 95% CI (0.550-0.696); OR: 2.3], hip circumference [AUC: 0.555, 95% CI (0.479-0.631); OR: 1], waist to-hip-ratio [AUC: 0.796, 95% CI (0.737-0.855); OR: 9.9], umbilical waist to-hip-ratio [AUC: 0.830, 95% CI (0.729-0.847); OR: 5.5], umbilical waist to-height-ratio [AUC: 0.788, 95% CI (0.729-0.847); OR: 7.5], conicity index [AUC: 0.795; 95% CI (0.738-0.853); OR: 9]. The correlations for waist to-height-ratios and conicity index were strong (all r ≥ 0.85; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Waist and height are measurements of associated independent risk. Hip circumference does no show discriminatory power. Obesity and waist-ratios are associated to myocardial infarction with different strength. Between other indicators, general obesity is more weakly associated. Waist to-hip-ratios present the best ROC curves but it occur information bias of their predictive power of risk. Umbilical waist to-height-ratio and conicity index present high discriminatory power and the best anthropometric risk correlations that support its use for the identification of obesity as risk factor associated to myocardial infarction and in all strategies for coronary health promotion.
