Evolutionary robotics (ER) is a methodology that uses evolutionary computation to develop controllers for autonomous robots. One of the most important ER techniques is based on using Continuous-Time Recurrent Neural Network (CTRNNs) for designing virtual agents and videogame avatars. This methodology is used in a videogame field in this paper. Specifically, virtual bots were designed with CTRNNs as the controllers of the non-player characters in the framework of the Unreal Tournament 2004 game. Some experiments that measure how good a CTRNN is when the bot has to solve roving problems and localizing obstacles along its path will be shown. As it can be noticed, the system presents the ability of obstacle avoidance in unstructured UT2004.environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
