1. Homework Tips for Parents = Consejos para los padres sobre la tarea escola.

Abstract

Homework has been a part of students' lives since the beginning of formal school in the United States; the push for increased homework has increased, fueled by rising academic standards. Noting that parents involved can have either a positive or a negative influence on the value of homework, this booklet, in both English and Spanish, offers suggestions to parents to enhance the effectiveness of children homework experience. The booklet first offers general homework tips, such as providing a suitable space for study and helping with time management. Specific tips are then offered for homework in reading, such as having the child read aloud, or asking what the child thinks will happen next in the story; and for homework in math, such as engaging frequently with the teacher to monitor math progress, and not teaching strategies or approaches that may conflict with ones the teacher is using. The guide concludes by highlighting the education reform principles of the No Child Left Behind Act. (HTH)

Abstract

The No Child Left Behind program changes the federal role in education by asking America's schools to describe their success in terms of what each student accomplishes. The information in this reading guide, presented in Spanish, was developed by the United States Department of Education to assist parents, caregivers, and teachers in understanding the importance of reading and the role of parental involvement in helping children learn to read. It discusses the best time to start reading to children and effective reading strategies. The reading guide also provides identifications of a good early reading program, homework tips, a list of the five essential components of reading, and a description of the No Child Left Behind program. Abstract

Homework is an opportunity for children to learn and for families to be involved with their children's education, but helping children with homework is not always easy. This Spanish-language booklet is designed to provide parents of elementary and middle grades students with an understanding of the purpose and nature of homework and offers suggestions for helping their children complete assignments successfully. The first section of the booklet discusses the "basics" of homework: why teachers assign it, how homework helps children learn, and what is the right amount of homework. The remaining sections discuss how parents can help: (1) show that education and homework are important, including providing suitable study space, materials and resources, and setting a good example; (2) monitor assignments, including asking about the school's homework policy and looking over completed assignments; (3) provide guidance, including helping the child get organized, and watching for frustration; and (4) talking with teachers to resolve problems, including telling the teacher of parents' concerns. The booklet concludes with a list of pertinent resources, federal sources of information for children with learning disabilities, and a checklist for helping with homework. (HTH)

13. Homeside Activities--Grade 4.

Abstract

Providing a low-key, nonthreatening way for teachers and parents to build partnerships for kids, this book presents short, concrete activities in English and Spanish to foster communication between teachers and parents and between parents and children. While the activities in the book are designed for grade 4, none of the activities have grade-specific references; they can also be used in mixed-grade and ungraded classrooms. The activities in the book make it easy for parents to contribute a "homeside" to their children's schoolside learning. The activities in the book are introduced once or twice a month in class, completed at home, and then incorporated into a follow-up classroom activity or discussion. Typically these 15- to 20-minute activities in the book are reciprocal parent-child interviews or opportunities to share experiences and opinions. The book begins with a description of "homeside activities" and their benefits, guidelines for teachers, and a letter to parents. The 18 teacher pages and activities in the book are on topics such as homework, winter feelings, family history, historical heroes, neighborhood maps, and school year summary. (RS)

The Family Kindergarten program designed and pilot tested by a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Garretson Elementary School in Corona, California, is described. Based on the premise that parents are the most important and influential educators of children, Family Kindergarten was conceived as an evening class that includes parents and children working together. It is currently offered at five elementary schools in the school district, and positive results include increased volunteerism in the schools and parents who have become advocates for school reform. The program budget is reported, along with information on suppliers, announcements, parent letters, a calendar of events, reminders, and program letterhead. Five sections, which comprise the bulk of this report, are as follows: Session I (Kindergarten Homework); Session II (Reading with Your Child); Session III (Mathematics 1); Session IV (Language Development); and Session V (Mathematics 2 and Evaluation). Each section contains a lesson plan, agenda, and supplemental materials. Materials are in both English and Spanish. (LB)

Abstract

The active participation of families in the pedagogical support of students is crucial for their academic success. The objective of this study is the elaboration of a manual of good practices to strengthen the pedagogical accompaniment of the family in the fulfillment of homework by students in the fourth year of general basic education (EGB). The sample consisted of 20 students in the fourth year of a multigrade school, with representatives of their 12 families and a teacher. A single-group quasi-experimental design was used, combining student and family surveys, teacher interviews and documentary analysis. This is a mixed type of study, since qualitative and quantitative elements were combined, which made it possible to better understand in depth the importance of pedagogical support to the family for the fulfillment of school duties in students of the fourth year of EGB. Methods used were interviews with families and fourth grade students of the Héctor Lara Zambrano school, systematic observation, and specialists' criteria. Mathematical statistics with percentage analysis were also used. The results revealed significant improvements in family pedagogical accompaniment and homework fulfillment after the implementation of the manual. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

There is a preoccupation with low results o in the PISA tests. In Colombia, the development of competencies becomes an urgent objective for the community because it will generate effects of change in society. Therefore, teachers have homework to propose activities that contribute to their development at the school. However, the connection between the competencies, Curriculum, and application in the classroom is not a simple task. Consequently, this research focused on developing scientific competence in eighth and ninth-grade students of the Alfredo Iriarte local district school in Bogotá city. The intervention process used a line of knowledge supported by the competency-based approach of PISA. Thee learning context includes socio-scientific aspects. The analysis of PISA items and understanding of the scientific sub-competences were fundamental parts of this research. The results of previous investigations took into account as well. Those data allowed us to design research instruments and adapted them to our context. The process was evaluated through a quasi-experimental methodology. The intervention group obtained a significant improvement in the development of the skills that make up scientific competence compared to the control groups. Among the didactic implications, it will be necessary to design different cognitive activities for teachers and they will develop their capacities and abilities gradually. Abstract

The learning of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can become limited for various reasons, highlighting the lack of pedagogical action in the training processes. Therefore, the main objective was: to identify the main learning difficulties in students with ADHD. The study methodology was oriented towards the qualitative approach based on the types of exploratory and descriptive research. The selection criteria for the content foundation have been scientific articles, doctoral and master's theses. The selected information responded to the last five years. The main results made it possible to show that ADHD is an alteration of neurobiological origin beginning in childhood characterized by the presence of clinical levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. It was also possible to find out that children with this disorder are always restless, find it difficult to sit in the classroom and do not follow instructions, do not finish homework in the allotted time and are easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli. This descriptive-inferential research aims to compare the parental assessment of 1,787 families with respect to schoolwork in times of confinement according to the nationality and level of education of the families. The results show that immigrant families identify more changes in schoolwork in all aspects except for emotional exhaustion. In addition, the educational level of both parents has a significant impact on some study variables such as emotional distress, perceived increase in time spent on homework and promotion of the positive effects of homework. Faced with the new scenario caused by the period of lockdown, schools and teachers had to redirect their education methods with regard to different aspects, including homework. The main objective of this descriptive-inferential, cross-sectional, non-experimental and quantitative study is to identify the quantity, difficulty and types of homework done during the period of lockdown, according to the type of centre, stage of education and the presence of educational needs, with a sample of 1,787 families. The results show that parents perceive that homework during lockdown was characterised by a greater quantity, difficulty, individualisation and technologization. Regarding school variables, the stage of education significantly modifies the perception of the difficulty, quantity and types of homework. Moreover, the presence of special educational needs influences the difficulty, and ownership of the centre influences the exercise of individual or group tasks. In conclusion, the need is highlighted for families to be counselled in Secondary Education and for teachers to receive better training with regard to homework for pupils with special educational needs. The mathematics teaching in indigenous contexts often ignores the mathematical knowledge and teaching styles of the communities, positioning the western school domain. The consequences of this, merit formulating a proposal that is raised from indigenous peoples, so this research builds a model of mathematical tasks with cultural responsibility (MTCR) from the Mapuche context in three indigenous territories of Chile and their respective schools. The work with each establishment and its family context is carried out under the research cycles and the participatory action research process, from which a modelo MTCR is configured with mathematical artifacts, objectives, activities and class management as a founding structures of a third space integrated in a parallel dialogical way between local and school culture. This contribution discusses emerging cultural practices of media activities with the example of homework as an out-ofschool learning context. Data was collected using diaries on the use of media during out-of-school learning activities. Central theoretical frameworks include the German theory of Medienbildung as an actor's threefold relation towards the material/factual world, the other/s and society, and her-/himself and the socio-cultural ecology of mobile learning as a triangular relationship between agency, cultural practices and structures. Following a grounded theory approach, data analysis was conducted in an inductive manner, drawing on contemporary methods of computer enhanced qualitative analysis. This article focuses on verbal expressions within the diary entries, implicating cultural practices in everyday media activities and their impact on media use in a domestic learning context, such as homework. Two central aspects are highlighted from the results, exemplifying the category and theory generation. First, "checking", as one of the reappearing invivo codes, will be examined more closely regarding its embedding in media practice and homework. It will be characterised as a daily recurring receptive and productive media practice. Second, apps and services, as well as media hardware used at school, are mirrored in the way students actually use media during homework, mingling with everyday media practices. Abstract

This article analyzes the prospects of economic viability of installing photovoltaic systems connected to the network in homes of the city of Arica (Chile). Installation would allow residents to generate an additional income source by selling electricity surpluses while saving on electricity consumption and reducing CO2 emissions. The proposed methodology is based on the characterization of the average house in the city of Arica and on the subsequent dimensioning and profitability analysis of the photovoltaic system to be installed. This includes the economic, technical, legal, and environmental aspects related to the installation of photovoltaic systems. The results show that photovoltaic systems were profitable in the Arica homes included in this study. In conclusion, the implementation of photovoltaic systems as a source of distributed power generation is a viable project in Arica homes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
