- Abstract
This brochure presents an overview of the eight trial Family Support Programs in Illinois which attempt to meet needs of families of children with disabilities in order to enable such children to remain with their families and avoid institutional placements. Principles of family support are listed, including its focus on whole families and meeting needs within integrated community environments. Innovative approaches of some of the programs currently offered in 45 states are noted. The Illinois program is then reviewed, noting such factors as provision of services to over 150 families, new state legislation, planned stipends to families providing care at home, and direct services to adults to encourage self-supporting independent living.
