In this work, the parametric sensitivity of the production process of o-nitroaniline, from ammonia and onitrobenzene, was studied with the aim of determining its safe operating conditions. The industrial batch operation data, related to the accident occurred at the Monsanto plant located in Sauget, Illinois, United States, were analyzed. For the conditions of that day, using the mass and energy balances, the variation of the reactor temperature was modeled. Additionally, local-sensitivity temperature coefficients were calculated with respect to the amount of o-nitrobenzene fed to the reactor for different initial operating temperatures. Thus, safe operating conditions were determined according to different initial operating conditions. Finally, it was explained how the combination of two factors in the operational conditions (reactor load and failure in the service fluid) were the factors that promoted the rupture of the reactor. El artículo discurre sobre las experiencias del autor con el profesor Friedrich Katz. El autor relata anécdotas acerca de sus experiencias tomando clases impartidas por Katz en la Universidad de Chicago en los Estados Unidos. Él destaca también sus relaciones profesionales con Katz después de recibir su doctorado en Historia de América Latina.

After describing the program of early compensatory education (from age 3 to 9), called Chicago Child-Parent Centers (CPC), this article collects and analyses the evaluation studies of that Program from a longitudinal perspective - Chicago Longitudinal Study (CLS)-, focusing primarily on methodological problems and afterwards on the short and, mainly, long terms effects, until the targeted subjects of the Program reached the age of 24. The studies confirm the Program has lasting educational (higher performance and educational achievements) and social (higher social adjustment) effects. Subsequently, it analyses which elements of the Program can produce these beneficial effects, which are basically its early inception and parent involvement in their children's education. The eight-hour shift work is one of the main achievements of the organized workers. International solidarity with United States miners, who were massacred in Chicago at 1886 and the aftermath of the World War I, promoted the establishment of the eight-hour shift work in many countries. In Mexico, the 1917 Social Rights Declaration adhered to this position under the idea that the excessive workload above the 8-hour limit had negative effects on the health of workers; nevertheless, this statement seems to be sustained only by testimonies, anecdotic opinions and/or by the logic and common sense that then prevailed. For this reason, a literature review was carried out in search for the evidence supporting this apparently immovable length of the shift work. The globalization of the economy and the tendency towards flexibility and deregulation of current contractual relationships, are the new challenges that the eight-hour shift work is facing. The article focuses on the culture and social life in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago occupies a central situation in the United States. There is no city in the U.S. whose development maintains the most apparent relations with the growth of its population, with the movement of expansion that has taken it not only towards the west, but to the intermediate region, in individual to the Middle west. The article also presents information on the population growth in the city. During 1860 to 1930, the population of Chicago increased in proportion from 1 to 31.
