There are different methods of endotracheal intubation available for airway management during a surgical procedure in patients with severe maxillofacial trauma. There are times when a nasotracheal or intratracheal intubation are contraindicated an endotracheal intubation by submental approach is a very helpful alternative vs a tracheostomy for patients severely traumatized in the maxillofacial area. This technique permits to manage the patient with a secure airway and allows an intermaxillary fixation during the surgery that's indispensable to obtain the best results in the reduction and fixation of all the bone fractures and therefore avoiding the need to do a tracheostomy and all the complications related to this procedure. This presentation has the objective to describe the technique of submental intubation, the indications and contraindications of the procedure as well as to show a clinical case.
