Background and aims: This article approaches the medical ethnobotany of the Criollos of the east of the province of Formosa (Argentina) from the description and study of a particular typical pathology of their ethnomedicine named py'a ruru, as a local name for hepatitis or stomach swelling, (its etiology, therapeutics and the plants involved in its treatment). These rural and peri-urban populations wiht Hispanic-Guarani roots, live in the Chaco Húmedo region and in their medicine and ethnobotany classificatory were observed notions related to the Hippocratic-Galenic theory, as occurs in the medicines and ethnobotany of other human groups of the country and of America. M&M: Ethnobotanical information was collected through semi-structured interviews. Plant material was collected in the forest and also plant samples were acquired in a market. Results: The etiology and therapeutics of py'a ruru are exhaustively described and analyzed. The 21 vegetal species used in its therapeutics are detailed. 10 of them are classified as "fresh remedies" and 7 of them as "drying remedies". Furthermore, these species imply 21 medical ethnobotanical data. Conclusions: The continuities and discontinuities of warm-fresh and dry-humid notions typical of the local Criollos in their medical ethnobotany and ethnomedicine, together with the 21 plant species used in the treatment of the disease described, allow us to glimpse the wealth of knowledge that are used in domestic and specialists medicine in the east of the province of Formosa. In 1905, Juan Aníbal Domínguez, founder and director of the Pharmacy Museum of the School of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires, and Eugenio Autran, curator of the Herbarium of the Museum found out that student Pompeyo Bonpland, grandson of the famous Bonpland, was pursuing a medical degree. Both academics knew of the existence of some unpublished documentation of the naturalist, the first, and received this valuable documentation through this young man. The Bonpland Archive is a heterogeneous collection of around 2,050 documents of various lengths and diverse complexity. It ranges from a period prior to Bonpland's arrival at the Río de la Plata and ends more than 40 years after his death, with letters received at his home in 1858. Furthermore, there are travel diaries with biological descriptions new to science. From the point of view of its preservation, the archive is stable in relation to flat documents, however, the same does not occur with manuscript diaries. This is why its conservation and restoration is being planned. The latter will allow science researchers to access the archive and take advantage of the great potential of the Bonpland Archive. Background and aims: Citharexylum amabilis (Verbenaceae) is a species used as hypoglycemic in the ethnomedicine of the criollos of the humid northern of Chaco. It is commonly called "Sarandí blanco" or "Sarã morotí" and its leaves are used for medical purposes. There is another species known as Citharexylum myrianthum (Verbenaceae) that can be used as a substitute of the former. Citharexylum myrianthum can be found in different markets in Formosa and it has the same vernacular name, use and organ employed as Citharexylum amabilis. Due to the absence of morphoanatomic information about the plant organ used in both species, a detailed description of each of them was conducted in order to provide anatomical characteristics that may allow a better identification and microscopic differentiation between the two of them. M&M: Ethnobotanical information was collected through semi-structured interviews. Plant material was both, collected and acquired, in a market. The characterization of these materials was performed with anatomical techniques. Results: It is possible to distinguish the leaves of both species mainly due to the presence of single-celled and multicellular simple eglandular trichomes in C. myrianthum and its absence in C. amabilis. Conclusions: This work becomes the first pharmacobotanical study of the leaves of these species, and the first record of the use of C. amabilis in the medical ethnobotany of northwestern Argentina. Background and aims: At the Instituto de Botánica del Nordeste (IBONE) valuable unpublished data of Raúl Martínez Crovetto (M.C.) -pionner of the ethnobotany research in Argentina- about the Aonik'enk ethnobotany registered during 1967 at the Santa Cruz province, were found. The aims of this contribution are to analyse and interpret the voluminous set of information that M.C. has surveyed about the Aonik'enk plant names, in order to contribute to the cultural heritage of this indigenous people, and to the understanding of its ethnobotany. M&M: The methodology used is that corresponding to "historical ethnobotany", which considers data from the past as a source of primary information on which the classical ethnobotanical method is applied. Results: It is shown that M.C. register 105 Aonik'enk plant names used to name 165 botanical taxa (mostly -88.5 %- native plants) in a total of 236 correspondences among them. Semantic analysis of the vernacular nomenclature results in 45 primary lexemes; 10 secondary lexemes, and 28 metaphorical or descriptive names, besides of 22 refonologized loans (absolute and from translation) acquired from other languages. Conclusions: It is worth highlighting the setting in value, the analysis and the ethnotaxonomic implications of the numerous information referred to, as well as its updating and the original data provided by the authors. The fluid dynamic behavior of an anaerobic fermentation bioreactor through three-dimensional numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics with the software OpenFOAM® has been studied. Two operating conditions were evaluated: one with a downward recirculating regime and another in the opposite direction. Results obtained with upward recirculating flow indicate an optimization of the process in this regime. This implies a larger turbulent region in the bioreactor and a better mixing without compromising the integrity of the flocs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used in implants and prostheses. However, the clinical success of these biomaterials can be compromised due to failures that can occurs by loss cohesion of tissue, fracture or allergic reactions caused by the presence of dissolved metallic ions or detached solid particles by mechanical factors. Some results presented on the literature have been showed that the surface roughness of the titanium implants affects the osseointegration rate and biomechanical fixation. The present work aims to study the current density effect on the electrochemical treatment of Ti to obtain nanostructured surfaces. The samples were mechanically sanded and electrochemical treatment on acid solution. After the electrochemical treatment the samples were characterized by atomic force microscopy, profilometry and wettability tests. Preliminary results showed that is possible to control the morphology of nanostructured surfaces by electrochemical treatment parameters control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present research was to study the influence of operational parameters in the electropolishing process of titanium alloys, involving nanostructured surfaces. The electropolishing operational parameters influence the formation of nanostructured materials, promoting the obtainment of specific properties. In this work, a variation time was studied to produce nanostructured surfaces by the electropolishing process. The surfaces obtained were evaluated by atomic force microscopy and surface hydrophobicity was determined by the measurement of the contact angle. Preliminary results showed that the control on the size and depth of nanostructures on these surfaces is possible by electropolishing time variation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cefalitis capitate (Wiedemann) is a cosmopolitan Tephritids ditpteran native to the north of Africa, which is the main plague of fruit trees in many countries of the American continent. Here we assess the dispersion capacity of the Ceratitis capitata, by releasing sterile flies under field conditions, in order to predict possible invasion to agricultural valleys nearby. 54,000 marked sterile flies of both sexes were released in locations of the Tulum Valley, close to the access to the Ullum and Zonda valleys, Jackson & Mc Phail traps were set up for monitoring the dispersion flights. 1,213 adults were captured during the sampling period, and there was no dispersion of the released adults from the Tulum valley to the Ullum and Zonda valleys. Host presence, geographical position of each ravine and wind orientation could explain the dispersion difference between both ravines. The dispersion lasted five weeks and the average dispersion distance reached by the released adults was of 3,764 m (S= 2897 ml. No differences between sexes were detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unpublished data from Raúl Martínez Crovetto on plant practices and meanings among the Aonik'enk people of Santa Cruz documented during 1967, were found at the Institute of Botany of the Northeast (IBONE). Its value is a priori remarkable in view of the limited background on ethnobotany of this human group. The aims of this study were to value, analyze, update and interpret the voluminous set of information documented at fieldwork by Martínez Crovetto, to compile and classify the scattered data found in the literature on the subject, and to compare these data with those referred to for the Selk'nam (onas) of Tierra del Fuego. The methodology corresponds to historical ethnobotany, which considers data from the past as a primary source of information on which the classical ethnobotanical method is applied. A total of 163 data on Aonik'enk ethnobotany from Raúl Martínez Crovetto's field records were valued, as well as 105 from published secondary sources consulted. In total, 244 different ethnobotanical data about this people are referred for 117 botanical taxa. Most ethnobotanic uses were food (90; 36.7%) and medicinal (81; 33%). The coincidence between the Aonik'enk and Selk'nam data exceeds 60%, indicating the existence of links between their ethnobotany. This contribution is the greatest input into Aonik'enk ethnobotany both for the amount and diversity of data compiled, and for the volume of new unpublished data informed. Edible uses of Rumex species roots and of Chuquiraga avellanedae aerial part are cited here for the first time for Argentina, as well as Mulguraea tridens roots for making of combs.
