The destruction of historical heritage sites caused by the conflicts in the Middle East, represented by the loss of ancient monuments such as the cities of Palmyra and Aleppo in Syria and Nineveh in Iraq, highlights the challenge of protecting historical heritage in events of armed conflict and lead to talk about an actual cultural cleansing aimed at erasing the collective cultural memory and historical past of these regions. This unprecedented destruction has led to the adoption of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the role of UNESCO. This strategy is based on two main axes: strengthening state capacity to prevent, mitigate and rebuild the damage, on the one hand, and incorporating culture protection into humanitarian action, security strategies and peace consolidation processes, on the other hand. This article discusses a historical engineering digital project entitled "Avisos de Levante" ("Warnings from the Levant") organized by the Centro Europeo para la Difusiión de las Ciencias Sociales (European Center for the Diffusion of Social Sciences), with a particular focus on the fields of the humanities and social sciences. The authors comment on the digitization of historical documents from the Mediterranean region of the 16th through the 17th centuries. They also describe the concept of historical engineering within the context of this project.

This article tries to fill a vacant space of information about the rural and outlying areas of the Ancient Near East. This work is organized in a chronological way from the Neolithic period until the Iron Age. It will be mentioned firstly how rural areas can be defined. Then, in the chronological description, the discoveries of different rural places and the remains found there will be mentioned. It will observe how most of the information come from ceramic remains, precarious constructions, domestic utensils, tools, remains of foods, grains and animal bones. The reading of these data will provide the necessary background to define the characteristics of a rural area and to have a nuance of the social organization of the inhabitants of those areas.
