The COVID-19 pandemic forced the school of medicines to opt for a virtual teaching modality due to the suspension of face-to-face activities imposed by the lockdown. Objective: To determine the advantages and disadvantages of the virtual teaching modality perceived by the students in an introduction to clinical medicine course of a school of medicine in Lima, Peru. Methods: A virtual non-validated survey was circulated among fourth year medical students. Results: 94 studentes answered the survey (51%). Perceived advantages were to have more time to study (57.4%) and saving time in transportation (39.4%). The disadvantages were lack of contact with real patients (42.6%) and not to be able to obtain a clinical history from patients (39.4%). The 72.3% of students were able to identify the medical problems of patients, but only 24.4% were able to obtain an adequate clinical history and just 9.6% performed an adequate physical examination. Conclusion: The virtual teaching modality allowed the student to have more time for self-study but limited their abilities to obtain a clinical history and to perform a physical examination. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of and risk factors for suicidal attempts among first year medical students of a private university in Lima. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out including 134 (98.5% of the total number of students) first year medical students of Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener (Lima, Perú) who consented to participate in the study. A bivariate analysis was carried-out (p<0.05). Results: the prevalence of life time suicidal attempt, wish to die and suicidal attempt was 34.3%, 22.4% and 19.4%. The suicidal risk was 32.1%. Bivariate analysis identified severe family dysfunctionality (p<0.001); probable depression (p<0.001), on the other hand the suicidal attempt was associated with probable depression (p<0.05), anxiety (p<0.05), homicidal thinking (p<0.001), violence risk (p=0.005), severe family dysfunctionality and alcohol drinking suspicion (p<0.05). Conclusions: First year medical students at Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener (Lima, Perú) are at risk of suicidal attempts, which is associated to other mental health problems. Emotional sensitivity is defined as the capacity that individuals have to quickly identify emotions, both own and others, as well as the ability to react to the emotions expressed by others. This is relevant when it comes to the training of future physicians. We explored the emotional sensitivity of 163 (34,17%) medical students at the start of the race, with emotional sensitivity scale (ESE) already validated in the country. There were limitations in terms of available time of the subjects to answer the questions of the instrument. Young people showed scores media for negative egocentric sensitivity (41%) cases (P<0,05) and also for the emotional distance (44%)(p=>0.05), and values a bit higher (57%) in the positive Interpersonal sensitivity (P<0,05). It is concluded that students in the sample investigated, had negative egocentric sensitivity lower-middle, and middle high scores on positive Interpersonal sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHOLOGICAL stress testing , *PSYCHOLOGY of medical students , *C-reactive protein - Abstract
Introduction: Currently stress levels are largely limiting the activities at work, especially in vulnerable populations. Our objective was to determine the association of biochemical profile and stress in human medicine students of the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego-Piura. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study, a non-probability convenience sampling of the results of the medical examination passed by 132 students from 1st to 6th year of the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego, Piura in their registration process 2013-II. The State Anxiety Inventory and Risk (STAI) and the lipid profile, hemoglobin, CRP and weight were used. Stata 11.0 for univariate and bivariate statistical analysis was used. Results: 51% (78) were women. 11% (14) had a score of STAI considered moderate/severe stress; this was associated with the average value of triglycerides (moderate/severe stress: 160 mg/dL and mild/without stress: 126 mg/dL, p value: 0.020), hemoglobin (moderate/severe stress: 11.1 mg/dL and mild/without stress: 12.6 mg/dL, p value <0.001) and positive CRP (moderate/severe stress: 21% and mild/without stress: 5%, p value: 0.045). There was no association of biochemical values by year of study, but with the weight of the student (p: 0.036). Conclusion: Some biochemical values were higher in those medicine students who were more stressed; longitudinal studies should be conducted to determine if there is causality in the relationship. In Peru, two out of ten people have anxiety disorders. It is common to find medical students with medium or high anxiety levels, mainly because of the academic factor, in addition to other causes which may represent stressors for them. Objective: Identify the variation in the anxiety levels during exams in the students of Basic Sciences of the Human Medicine School at the University of San Martín De Porres - Filial Norte. Material and Methods: We performed a descriptive, comparative, longitudinal study. We applied the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) before and during the period of final exams. The sample was all the population (133 students), considering the selection criteria, identified by the questionnaire and the evaluation of the first anxiety test. Results: Before the final exams, the State-Anxiety that prevailed was the mid-level (51.13%), followed by high (25.56%) and low level with 23.31%. During the final exams, the high level had the highest percentage (49.62%). Most students reported variation in their State-Anxiety levels (51.13%): 39.85% got worse and 11.28% improved. Conclusion: We found a great number of changes in the anxiety levels of students. Most of them reported high levels in their stateanxiety during the period of final exams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of depression in Medical Students (MS) is higher than in the general population and changes with time. It is not known whether the prevalence of depression is higher and the associated factors different between students that initiate the last and first academic years in Medical School. Objective To compare the prevalence of depression and the associated factors in MS that start their academic courses in the first and the last academic years. Methods This is a cross sectional, observational and analytical study. A total of 1871 MS participated: 1240 were in the initiation of the first academic year, and 631 in the initiation of the last academic year. Participants answered a written survey conformed by a questionnaire about risk factors for depression and assessed for current depression with the Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results The prevalence of depression (PHQ-9≥10) was significantly higher in last year MS compared to first year MS (5.7 vs. 3.5%). The percentage of MS with a personal history of depression was higher in last year compared to first year MS (12.1% vs. 7.1%), as was the mean for previous depressive episodes (3.2 vs. 1.6). The age of onset for depressive episodes was higher in the last year group. Conclussions The prevalence of depression in MS that initiated the academic year is higher in the last year than at the beginning of the first year of the career, and could be attributed, among other factors, to a cumulative phenomenon resulting from the allostatic load that this academic process currently generates. A personal history of depression and other situational factors are associated to the presence of depression in a differential manner according to the academic year and should be considered in future studies. Stress occurs when a stimulus increases the activation of an organism more rapidly than their adaptive capacity to mitigate it. Objective. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of stress in students of medicine, in a private university in Medellin, Colombia. Methodology. Cross sectional study. The participants were 453 medical students who voluntarily wanted to participate. We included socio-demographic and stress-related variables. The analysis was performed with the SPSS program vr 17.0. For quantitative variables, the averages standard deviations and minimum and maximum values were calculated. Qualitative variables were expressed in frequencies and percentages. To determine the association between the dependent and independent variables was applied χ², and statistical significance if the value of the probability was less than 0.05 was assumed. Results. The students presented an average age of 20. 6±2.5 years, 73.1% were women, 93.6% were unmarried, and 58.3% of the students were on the first three years of training. The stress level was average in a 95.4% of students, and the 4.6% remaining was mild. Conclusions. All evaluated students of medicine presented some level of stress. It is necessary to incorporate measures that will help to reduce this problem in the study population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of depression among medical students is significantly higher than that from the general population or other undergraduate students and can result in dropping out, in such a way that the growing number of students who have dropped due to their poor performance or their vocational indecision could be related to the presence of this condition. Objective and methodology To identify if the depressive symptoms presented by medical students from first year were associated with poor performance. The study included 774 medical students in their first year (66.4% female, 33.6% male, average age: 18.6 ± 1.7 years). The Beck Inventory for Depression and the SCL90 (Symptom-CheckList) depression subscale were used. Statistical analysis. Descriptive analyzes were performed, χ², Student t test and logistic regression. Results The percentage of students with depressive symptoms was 23% (male 12.3%, women 28.4%), with a significant difference in depressive symptoms between women and men medical students (OR=2.8). 68% of students who had depressive symptoms failed a subject, which was a risk of disapproval of 2.4 times compared with those without such symptomatology. The variables sex and depressive symptomatology were found to be factors related to poor academic performance, with an increased risk for students with symptoms (OR=2.2, 95% CI=1.56-3.20). Conclusions Depressive symptomatology is an important risk factor for failing a subject or having a poor academic performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Depressive symptoms in health sciences students are common, these might be potentially detrimental. Objectives. To determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and its associated factors in students from the Health Sciences faculty of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas in Lima (Peru), June 2010. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional analytic study; a pre-consented survey was applied to the population 590/869 students. Zung's abbreviated scale was used to measure depressive symptoms. To evaluate de associated factors, logistic regression was used, p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The mean age was 18.97 ± 2.45 years and 71.1% were women, 19.6% were migrants and 62.5% were medical students. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 31.2% in the whole population and in medical students was 33.6%. Depressive symptoms were not associated in bivariate analysis with sex, career, having failed a course, living alone or being a migrant (p>0.05). In the multivariate analysis, significant statistical association was found between depressive symptoms and dissatisfaction with the own academic performance (OR=2.13 CI95%1.47-3.08), dissatisfaction with the current economic status (OR=1.93 CI95%1.24-2.99) and living with a relative external to the nuclear family (OR=1.62 CI95%1.07-2.45). Conclusion. A high prevalence of depressive symptoms was found, especially in medical students; being dissatisfaction with academic performance, economic status and living with a relative external to the nuclear family associated factors that could be taken into account in order to build preventive programs. Introduction. Stress in medical practice is highest during the residency, given that the relationship with patients is established for the first time and it is the fastest stage of learning, in addition to life events. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of psychic disorders throughout the entire period of training and risk factors that determine them. Methods. Cross-sectional study was conducted on 145 residents of all specialties and years of training. They were evaluated at the beginning of each year, and also at the end of that year if they ended the residency. We assessed sociodemographics data, psychic antecedents, stress, psychopathology, personality traits and coping behaviour used. Results. The prevalence of mental disorders was high (49%), but they were generally not very severe. They were associated with the wish to quit the profession and lack of time for social and familiar relationships. In the discriminant analysis, the psychopathology was mainly associated with traits of "Neuroticism", "Self-reproach" and "Distancing" behaviors, personal psychic antecedents, and stress levels resulting mainly from aspects of the training itself. Conclusions. The assumption of both individual and contextual factors are important for mental health and career development at this stage of medical training. The knowledge of these risk factors would facilitate the implementation of preventive programs to guide the appropriate management of stress in this period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To identify the factors associated with level of knowledge and attitudes toward research among undergraduate medical students in Peru. Methods. In this analytical cross-sectional study, a validated questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to research was applied to a representative sample of students at 17 Peruvian medical schools. The categorical and quantitative variables were subjected to simple two-factor analysis with adjustment for intraclass correlation. Prevalence ratios were derived on the basis of generalized linear models using bifactorial and multifactorial analysis. Results. Questionnaires from 1 554 students (51.0% women) with an average age of 20.5 ± 2.86 years were analyzed. Only 46.7% of the respondents had a good level of knowledge and 37.7% had appropriate attitudes toward research. The variables that correlated with a good level of knowledge were the respondent having completed at least four years of academic study, belonging to a research group, and having an adviser. Having appropriate attitudes toward research correlated with being a woman and having an adviser. No differences were found between the level of knowledge and attitudes of the students at the universities studied. Conclusions. In general, the level of knowledge about research was unsatisfactory and the attitudes toward it were inappropriate. In order to change this situation, it will be critical to make changes in the curriculum to ensure that students engage in research from the beginning of their academic careers and develop research skills in their final years of study.
