Psychological flexibility constitutes one of the most crucial protective factors of mental health in the context of the lengthy COVID-19 pandemic. The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQII) is the most widely used instrument in assessing psychological flexibility and change processes involved in interventions aimed to promote them, mainly within the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model. Various translations and adaptations of the AAQ-II address specific clinical and non-clinical contexts. However, an instrument that assesses psychological flexibility in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic needs to be developed. The present study conducted a pilot phase of developing an Acceptance and Commitment Questionnaire in the COVID-19 pandemic (AAQ-COVID-19) context. The instrument is a 10-item Likert-type scale with five response options, it assesses the unidimensional construct of psychological flexibility. Data collected from a convenience sample of 36 adults, ages 42-76 (M=59.3), shows that all ten scale items have discriminating power. Methodological considerations regarding the construction and adaptations of items to address specific contexts are the main points of the discussion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suicidal behavior is constituted as a public health problem, and the literature is recognized extensively for enunciating risk and protection factors associated with the attempt of suicide. The evaluation of the methodological quality of the primary studies is required by systematic reviews, thus guiding decision-making regarding the design of interventions from the risk approach. The identification of the risk and protective factors associated with suicidal ideation and attempts in adolescents and young people in Latin America studies and the evaluation of the methodological quality of the included studies were the objectives of this systematic review. The databases CUIDEN, LILACS, Pubmed, Scielo, Science Direct, SCOPUS, EBSCO, and Medline were consulted, with the results being restricted to articles in the last 10 years. A total of 3,642 documents were obtained, from which 19 studies were included. Of the studies, 52.63% (n=10) were found to have a medium internal validity level, and 57.89% (n=11) were determined to have a medium global quality level. The most frequently reported family risk factors were family dysfunction and suicide background, with other factors including the presence of mental disorder, psychoactive substances consumption, physical violence, sexual violence, and the social factor. On the other hand, the study of protective factors was found to be limited, with family functionality and support being the most frequently reported evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this monographic documentary study is to analyze the scientific literature related to risk and protective factors associated with non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors (SIA) in adolescents. The findings of 274 open access papers published in English and Spanish on ScienceDirect and EBSCO platforms between the years 2010 and 2020, related to non-suicidal CAL in adolescents between 12 and 19 years old, are compiled. We found empirical evidence of the relationship between sociodemographic, psychological, family and social factors with non-suicidal CAL, and concluded that there is no single determinant factor and that there may be direct or mediating variables of these behaviors; also, an important theoretical gap was evidenced, mainly in relation to protective factors. LUNG cancer , *LUNGS , *AGE groups , *TUMORS , *SMOKING , *CANCER-related mortality , *OLD age - Abstract
Introduction: there has been an increase in lung cancer mortality in the world in recent years as a consequence of the increase in the pre-valence of smoking. Objective: to propose orienting activities on lung cancer protective factors in the smoking population. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in 38 smokers belonging to a population at risk in the Municipality of Quemado de Güines out of a total of 58, which constituted the study population. Quantitative nonprobabilistic intentional sampling was used to select the sample. Results: the research revealed a predominance of the 66 to 75 years old age group (39.47%), male sex (55.26%) and workers (47.36%) and it was corroborated that 55.26% consumed more than 10 cigarettes a day and that 97.36% were uninformed about the elements that reduce the risk or prevent this disease from causing harm. Conclusions: the smoking population was oriented to minimize or eliminate the habit after the prevailing misinformation about lung cancer, the protective factors of the disease in the sample studied and the actions to be taken to prevent it. - Abstract
Despite the empirical evidence on the important role of early adverse experiences in physical and mental health of the last three decades, some confusion about concepts still persists concerning the complex relationship between adversity, stress, and trauma. Conceptual advances are needed favoring an approach from primary, secondary, and tertiary health models. In line with this, the main goal of the present paper is to develop a transactional synthesis of the existing relationship between early adversity, stress system, trauma and attachment system, involved neurobiological mechanisms, as well as their consequences and challenges for mental health during development and later life. Using the narrative revision method, fundamental literature will be suggested and critically discussed in a selective way. We propose that a transactional and multilevel approach is useful to highlight the possibilities that emerge from analyzing the continuum between protective factors, adversity, and trauma, emphasizing the complex structure of their connections with trauma psychobiology. - Abstract
Chronic otitis media is an inflammatory process of the mucoperiosteum of the structures of the middle ear cavity, with an evolution of more than 3 months, with involvement of the tympanic membrane, either with perforation or scarring that will lead to conductive hearing loss. In pediatrics, it is considered a Public Health problem due to the permanent sequelae that affect language and hearing in young children, with repercussions on their learning. This is a basic review of recent concepts and the importance of a timely and early diagnosis of a picture of acute otitis media to prevent it from becoming chronic, with the primary care physician being the one who must correctly manage the first picture of otitis media. The current management of chronic otitis media is reviewed, as well as risk and protection factors, highlighting breastfeeding, the complete immunization schedule, and optimal antimicrobial management. PSYCHOSOCIAL factors , *SUICIDAL behavior of prisoners , *SUICIDE risk factors , *JUVENILE prisoners , *WEB databases , *MALE prisoners , *DATABASES , *FAMILY support , *CRIMINOLOGY , *PROTECTIVE factors , *PRISONS - Abstract
In this article, the most influential variables of suicidal behaviour in prisons in Europe are identified. To this end, a literature search was conducted from 2010 in the databases of Web of Science (Core Collection), Scopus, Psicodoc and the ProQuest platform (PsycExtra, Psychology Database, PsycArticle, Criminology Collection, and PsycINFO), selecting articles and reviews, with samples of adult inmates with suicidal behaviour. Articles with samples of juveniles, non-prisoners and non-European prisons were excluded. The results obtained with 8,468 inmates describe prior history as the most relevant risk factor for suicide, with family support being the most relevant protective factor. There is insufficient research on the influence of gender on suicidal behaviour, as well as a scarcity of studies with a sufficient sample of inmates from different European countries. - Abstract
The aim of this systemic review was to examine the risk and protective factors associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and symptoms of OCD in children and adolescents. We conducted a literature search using Scopus, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect and PubMed. A total of 25 published studies were included in the review. We examined all possible risk and/or protective factors that were associated with OCD and/or OCD subclinical symptoms. Most of the revised studies were focused on risk factors and the OCD. We found several types of risk factors, including biological (genetic, perinatal, neurological, infectious, etc.), personal (anxiety sensitivity, negative affect, behavioral inhibition, sense of responsibility, etc.), familial (parenting behaviors, childhood trauma, etc.), socioeconomic, and psychosocial (stress, low social support etc.) factors. Resilience and high social support emerged as protective factors. These results highlight that various factors, especially risk factors, appear to be consistently associated with OCD, which could be incorporated into future prevention programs for this disorder. Introduction: Alcohol consumption carries a heavy social and economic burden on society, government, overall health, and health systems. Objective: Determine the relationship and effect of family dynamics and school social environment on alcohol consumption in young university students. Methodology: This was a descriptive, correlational and predictive study with a sample of 367 undergraduate students from a university in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, selected by stratified random probability sampling. The 63.2% were women, with a mean age of 21.6 years (SD=2.82). A Personal Identity Card and Prevalence of Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire, the Family Apgar, the Questionnaire to Evaluate the Social Environment within the School and the AUDIT were used. The study complied with the provisions of the Regulations of the General Health Law on Research. Results: Family dynamics and school social environment were negatively and significantly related to alcohol consumption and to the three types of consumption: low-risk, dependent and harmful. Family dynamics (B= -.040, p<.05) and school social environment (B= -.096, p<.001) were identified as predictors of alcohol consumption in university young people. Conclusion: Family dynamics and school social environment as predictors of alcohol consumption may help to prevent this harmful behavior in young university students. These results can contribute to the inclusion of these variables in the understanding of alcohol consumption behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: sexual behavior has gained greater emphasis among health professionals due to the social and personal repercussions it has caused in new generations. It has become a public health problem at national and international level, which affects such a vulnerable population as adolescents. Purpose: this study aims to empirically evaluate the direct and indirect influence of age, sex, self-efficacy to prevent HIV, sexual resilience, psychological well-being, self-concept, functional social support and family communication on protected sexual behaviors in Venezuelan high school students. Method: it comprises a non-experimental, correlational, explanatory study with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 317 students was taken, selected under an accidental non-probabilistic sampling. Results: it was found that protective sexual behaviors are directly influenced by HIV prevention self-efficacy, sexual resilience and self-concept, and indirectly by functional social support, sex and family communication. Conclusion: These findings will allow the design of health promotion strategies that foster personal resources that will help students maintain safe sexual behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To identify the characteristics that make up the psychosocial risk factors that have an impact on suicidal behavior in Colombian prisoners, in order to improve the psychological care provided in penitentiaries. Method: Documentary review article, of qualitative type, carried out through a collection, review and analysis of 50 documents; of which 13 articles were selected for the elaboration of the results. During the research, the elaboration and distinction of the document is taken into account, according to the collection and organization of information collected through databases such as Scielo, Scopus, Oxford, Science Direct, Redalyc, Pubmed, among others, Therefore, the categories and subcategories developed during the investigation corresponding to the topic to work are discriminated. Results: Key psychosocial risk factors were identified, such as: prison ionization, family or affective bond, use of psychoactive substances, life plan, psychological problems and time of sentence; presented by the prison population worldwide, which are taken into account to reduce suicide rates in prison settings. Conclusions: The documentary review identifies the risk factors and protective factors that allow the timely detection of suicidal behaviour in persons deprived of their liberty, taking into account that some of the risk factors may also be protective factors, such as family ties, the life plan, the process of imprisonment and the time of sentence, and other factors if they are highly relevant because of their risk in suicidal behavior; such as substance use and psychological problems. PREVENTIVE health services , *SUBSTANCE abuse , *CONTENT analysis , *FLOW charts , *CROSS-sectional method - Abstract
In adolescence, we, as individuals, experience certain transition periods, not only physical, but also in the way we reason. For this, different promotion and prevention strategies are generated through intervention programs. The objective of this work is to review the available evidence on risk and protective factors in the prevention of psychoactive substance use. In this systematic bibliographic review, during 2020, of articles published in databases in English, Spanish and Portuguese such as Pubmed / Medline, Dialnet, Scopus, Redib, Lilacs, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Scielo, quantitative studies such as clinical trials were included, cohort studies, cases and controls, cross-sectional descriptive studies and mixed studies, in the adolescent population. The search strategy was carried out accepting the descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS), "Risk factors" "Protective factors" "Substancerelated disorders" "Preventive health services", with the Boolean operators AND and OR, the diagram flow (PRISMA) was used. The content analysis yielded a clear contrast in the interpretation of the theoretical references, the organization of knowledge and the bibliography found. Finally, it was found that most of the studies contemplated personal factors, followed by family factors and, to a social risk factors. Regarding protective factors, mostly those of a social nature, followed by those of a personal nature and in a percentage similar to those of a family nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DRINKING behavior , *ALCOHOL drinking , *NURSING theory , *COLLEGE students , *CONCRETE - Abstract
Introduction: Situation-Specific Theories (SST) address a relatively concrete and specific phenomenon that allow describing, explaining and predicting how it occurs. Their main function is to provide a structure and a guidance for the interpretation of initially puzzling behaviors, processes, human responses and events. Objective: to generate a SST that explains the socio-ecological protective factors of alcohol consumption in young university students based on the analysis of McLeroy's Socio-Ecological Model (SEM). Methodology: the Conceptual-Theoretical-Empirical (C-T-E) structure proposed by Fawcett was used, which consists of five steps 1) identification of concepts, 2) classification of concepts, 3) identification and classification of propositions, 4) hierarchical order of propositions and 5) construction of the diagram. Results: the SST is the result of the C-T-E structure, contributes to the identification of a discipline-specific phenomenon, and determines concepts, relationships and possible effect of protective factors on drinking behavior. Conclusion: the method was appropriate to build the Situation-Specific Theory as it allowed its development having a conceptual and theoretical basis and empirical indicators with which the concepts (variables) can be measured in different contexts (research and practice). Carers of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience stressful situations as a result of performing their role as caregivers. This can have a negative outcome on their quality of life. A greater understanding of the relationship between the variables assessed in caregivers can be important in implementing effective intervention programs. The aim of this study was to explore the personality and coping strategies used by family caregivers of people with PD, analyzing their relationship with psychological distress and the carer involvement. A cross-sectional study based on a sample of 106 caregivers of people with Parkinson's disease tested the hypothesis that personality and coping strategies can contribute to identifying differences in carer involvement and psychological distress. Caregiver psychological distress was assessed using the CORE-OM questionnaire. The CORE-OM is able to distinguish the population within the clinical and non-clinical range. NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEOFFI) was used to assess personality. Coping strategies were evaluated with the COPE-28 inventory. An operational measure of the carer involvement was also used. For this purpose, an adaptation of the Katz index assessing basic functional capacity was made. Results: First, all cases were clustered according to personality variables and coping strategies. A K-means cluster analysis was performed and two groups were requested. After this, binary logistic regression analysis was used to test the research hypothesis. The resulting clusters in the above analysis were selected as predictors. Two analyses were performed. In the first, the dependent variable in logistic regression analysis was the psychological distress of the caregivers (dichotomized variable: clinical and non-clinical). Results showed that people clustered within cluster 1 had a 9.250 times higher risk of psychological distress than those included in cluster 2 (OR = 9.250; p < .001). In a second logistic regression analysis, the dependent variable was participation in care (dichotomized variable: low - high carer involvement). The group of people belonging to cluster 1 showed a carer involvement 4.125 times lower than the people grouped in cluster 2 (OR = 4.125; p < .001). The results of this research suggest the existence of a relationship between psychological variables and carer involvement, showing two different styles of care, which are described based on the personality and coping strategies of the family caregivers. In addition, we found that these styles of care show clear differences in efficiency, reflected in greater carer involvement and a lower psychological distress. The results reported that the cluster of people with below-average scores on neuroticism and above-average scores on the other personality factors (extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and coping strategies (planning; active coping; emotional support; social support; positive re-evaluation and acceptance) were associated with increased carer involvement and reduced risk of psychological distress. It has already been suggested that high scores in neuroticism may affect the need to take on a large number of care-related tasks or manage stressful situations in people with PD (Tew et al., 2013). However, our results indicate that the definition of different types of caregivers, where other care-related variables are also included, can help define more efficient styles of care. This is associated with increased carer involvement and minor psychological distress. We propose that in the future these variables be investigated in order to know the outcome of carer involvement and psychological distress, contributing to the description of more efficient care styles in family caregivers. ALCOHOL drinking , *LIFE satisfaction , *STATE universities & colleges , *COLLEGE students , *ALCOHOL , *STATISTICAL sampling - Abstract
Objective: to determine the relationship and the effects of age, schooling, resilience, life satisfaction and human strengths with alcohol consumption in university students. Method: descriptive, correlational and predictive design, the participants were 367 students (63.2% women) aged 18 to 35 years (M=21.64, SD= 2.82) from a university in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. They were selected by stratified random probability sampling. Data collection was carried out during June and July 2021. Results: students with higher levels of resilience are more satisfied with life and have more human strengths. Age was related to alcohol consumption, and to low-risk and dependent drinking. The lower the indices of human strengths, the higher the low-risk and dependent alcohol consumption. Human strengths were shown to be predictors (B=- 0.14, p<.01) of alcohol consumption in young university students. Conclusion: human strengths are a negative predictor of alcohol consumption in college youth. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of alcohol consumption. Objective: To assess life satisfaction, vitality, positive affection, and the presence of complicated grief in first-degree mourners. Method: a total of 26 mourners, most of them women, aged 19 to 73, responded to the Life Satisfaction, Vitality, and Positive and Negative Affect scales, as well as the Complicated Grief Inventory. Descriptive analyses and the t Pearson and the d Cohen test explored interactions among variables. Results: The participants showed moderate life satisfaction scores, vitality, and positive affection, but a large percentage of them showed complicated grief, mainly men, when the loss had been sudden. Complicated grief was associated with less vitality and positive affection. Conclusions: It is necessary to identify protective factors to develop intervention programs that affect mourners to promote their physical and psychological health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILD sexual abuse , *PEDIATRIC clinics , *CHILD abuse , *DOMESTIC violence , *MENTAL health , *TEENAGERS , *POPULATION health - Abstract
According to the subsystem for monitoring domestic violence, sexual violence and child abuse (SIVIM) for the year 2020, a total of 14,327 cases of abuse against children and adolescents were reported in the city of Bogota. These figures show a latent problem in society with respect to the vulnerability of the rights of minors; however, the consequences on the mental health of this population are even more alarming. Child abuse and specifically neglect is a complex issue, and its study relates individual, family and socio-cultural variables, which make the study of child abuse and neglect even more complex. The main objective is to identify the risk factors associated with cases of neglect reported in the Colsubsidio Children's Clinic in the first quarter of the year 2021. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study with a quantitative methodology. The review of clinical histories was counted with a sample __among children and adolescents aged 0 to 17 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

YOUNG adults , *SUICIDAL behavior in youth , *SUICIDE prevention , *SUICIDAL ideation , *PROTECTIVE factors - Abstract
Introduction: At the Latin American level, suicide in young people and adolescents represents a serious problem, so it is necessary to work on its prevention. In this sense, this work presents a narrative theoretical review on the subject. Objective: To know the main experiences of suicide prevention in young people and adolescents in Latin America in the last 15 years. Method: 44 empirical studies were reviewed and analyzed, performing bibliographic searches in scientific journals indexed in Scopus, Scielo, WoS, REDALYC and ERIH PLUS and search engines such as Google Scholar and EBSCO. Results: The findings obtained in the 44 studies were organized into three categories: 1) diagnoses of suicidality made in the youth and adolescent population; 2) psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at treating suicidality; and 3) interventions based on programs, strategies and techniques focused on the prevention of youth and adolescent suicide. Discussion: The main diagnoses associated with suicidality are linked to emotional dysfunctionalities, where women are the main affected, the family and the environment appear as the main protective or risk factors depending on their functionality and cohesion. In addition, the most valued interventions are associated with the classic models of psychotherapy and psychoeducational strategies appear as the main focuses of preventive programs. Conclusion: Due to the multifactorial nature of the phenomenon, a paradigm shift should be made in the confrontation of suicidality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
