Women have had a very important role since the beginning of the development of Climatology as a scientific discipline in the early seventies of the last century. This is evidenced by his participation in the scientific meetings that culminated in the formation of the Climatology Group within the Spanish Association of Geography and later with the constitution of the Spanish Association of Climatology (AEC). Of the nine meetings of the Climatology Group of the AGE, only four have involved women and not exclusively. Since the constitution of the ACS, women have always had a leading role in the different boards of directors. Of the twelve congresses organized by the ACS, half have involved women along with male researchers, some of them from the field of Physics. Of the twenty-one research groups dedicated to climate issues, only in four the PI is female, in the rest the women are part of the research team whose PI is male. In terms of lines of research, women have participated in regional climatology, urban climate, climate variability, climate change and risks and in applied climatology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept, and implementation, of coordinated global climate governance at the metropolitan level is one of the biggest challenges in most of the world's cities. Yet--ironically--it is also one of the most overlooked aspects of the international environmental agenda. Specifi- cally, one of the main challenges is to achieve coordination in decision making, as well as in the implementation of actions to homologate the objectives of the different government agendas at all levels, i.e. the constitution of climate and environmental policies not only at the federal level but also at the state and municipal level (in the Mexican case). This article reviews the link achieved between the nine municipal governments that make up the metropolitan area of Guadalajara (AMG) through PACmetro, which promotes coordinated climate governance and addresses the gaps in international mechanisms for climate change policies. The above, generated through the synergies of different agendas, through the Institute for Development Planning and Management (Imeplan). Imeplan has integrated different actors, from different levels, to carry out coordinated actions on urban climate policies in western Mexico that contribute to the construction of a common urban agenda. The conclusion shows the contributions of Latin American local governments to a coordinated climate governance according to local contexts and how the will of cities contributes to the strengthening of the link between global climate governance, the exercise of paradiplomacy between different public, private and hybrid actors towards a common urban agenda. Climate action has been consolidated in cities through new social initiatives and institutional strategies. This article aims to contribute to understand social involvement in urban climate action and governance through a comparative analysis in two Spanish cities (Barcelona and Seville) guided by three research questions: 1) What spaces for collaboration with the administration and/or with other organizations for urban climate action and governance have been generated?; 2) What are the motivations and expectations of social organizations to get involved in these spaces?; and 3) To what extent active organizations in climate action collaborate (or not) with the administration for climate governance, and what limits do they perceive? This research combines a review of climate change policies and social initiatives, with interviews with key organizations in urban climate action to show the expansion and differentiation of the collaborative spaces for climate action and governance with the administration and with other organizations in both cities; and a variety of motivations for getting involved (or not) in those spaces. A better understanding of the limits and opportunities of the new public-civic partnerships is key to build rooted and transformative responses to the climate emergency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The approach to the climate-tourism relationship has expanded through the discipline of Tourism Climatology, although experiences in Southern hemisphere destinations are scarce. This article evaluates the bioclimatic and tourism climate comfort of Mendoza, an international destination with a semiarid climate representative of the Cuyo region. A quantitative approach based on direct indices was used: bioclimatic (thermo-hygrometric complex, thermo-anemometric complex and equivalent temperature) and tourism climate (Tourism Climate Index and Holiday Climate Index: Urban). For this, the monthly mean data of the last three available decades (1981-2010) were used. According to the results, summer is a critical time in terms of thermal comfort. However, according to tourism climate indices, the destination is suitable throughout the year, although the indices disagree as to the ideal time for tourism, making their applicability to destinations with a semiarid climate questionable. The article "Introduction: Political Ecology and Human Rights in Latin America" from the CIDOB Journal of International Affairs analyzes socio-environmental conflicts in protected areas of Latin America and their impact on human rights. The higher temperatures, big amount of radiation, low vegetation cover, the imperviousness of natural soil, among other urban-climates factors, generate great uncomfortable and inconvenience conditions for the urban population. Albeit some features of the cities are regulated by environmental norms (air quality, noise) and urbanistic norms (land uses, building rise), there is not a conceptual framework to define the urban climate quality in an integrated way. We proposed a novel indicator of Urban Quality Climate (uqc) that considers the query to experts, the calculation of climatic factors, and the modeling through the spatialization of statistical methods in gis. The city of Chillan, Chile, was the case study that has a high quantity of daytime hours affected by summer thermal discomfort and episodes of very poor air quality in winter. A high environmental injustice has been observed due to a huge socioeconomic difference between socio-environmental conditions and uqc in different neighborhoods of the city. It means that the population with higher socioeconomic levels enjoys greater uqc in relation to the indicators of the poorest sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The work applies the Local Climate Zones model in the Mendoza Metropolitan Area (AMM in Spanish), using the WUDAPT method and makes a critical analysis of its implementation feasibility based on the characteristics of the city. As a hypothesis, having a zoning of homologated urban structures according to their microclimatic condition is the first step to make the implementation of different urban heat island mitigation strategies effective on a city scale. The limitations of the WUDAPT method (World Urban Database Access Portal Tools) in the study area are linked to two factors: the definition of classes for zoning and the necessary homogeneity condition to determine training areas. The results show that the WUDAPT classification is structured in pure classes, with the impossibility of generating subclasses. The pure classes are defined according to the combination of a set of parameters that do not fully describe the condition of the urban profiles of the AMM in summer. In this season, the trees in rows act as a morphological structuring element. This implies the need to generate subclasses, affecting the relationship between Sky View Factor, road channel height/width ratio, Land Occupancy Factor, impermeable surface and average height. Another limitation is the size of the training areas, which require homogeneous areas of 1 km2, a difficult condition to fulfill in the AMM. In this work, the tool with standard classes has been adapted for the appropriate characterization of climatic zones in cities with abundant urban forestation, whose typology is growing in Latin America. It is concluded that once limitations of the tool are overcome, the climatic zones identified within the analysis area show correlation with the landscape in different sectors of the city and intra-class thermal homogeneity. Urbanization is defined as the physical growth of urban areas. About half of the world's population now lives in cities, and expected that this amount will increase to 61% by 2030, this growth will be more pronounced in developing countries. Cities are the habitat for excellence of human, and present environmental characteristics (urban climate) common in many parts of the world, as for example the presence of the island of urban heat (ICU). The urban heat island reveals the impact of habitat built on the physical environment and the increase in temperature that produces. The majority of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change come from urban areas. Climate change is affecting climate globally and in cities not only modifies the conditions of the hydrological cycle, but also affects the ICU. The increase of the temperature according to the models established by the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change could emphasize over the next decades. For Buenos Aires the models predict, specifically in the 2020-2029 period, an increase of average maximum temperatures in 0.6°C to 2°C (for the minimum temperature average). Law number 3.871, called: adaptation and mitigation to climate change in the Autonomous city of Buenos Aires, proposed minimum solutions of adaptation. One of these proposed solutions are the green roofs, which (mentions the law), mainly can help as buffer against temperature extremes and the urban heat island. The objective of the present study was to determine, for the climatic conditions of the Autonomous city of Buenos Aires (CABA), if the green roofs (built with substrates and vegetation available at the study site), can make a contribution to the regulation of the temperature. The study make it possible to say, for the analyzed case and in the climatic conditions of the CABA in the period and types of green roofs studied, that the same may be a contribution to the thermal regulation of buildings. The objective was to determine the potential mitigation of the Urban Heat Island in a city sector of Mexicali (Baja California, México). The potential was determined through modeling the urban fabric; expressed in land use, land cover, and buildings as well as, the ability to implement mitigation strategies. The results show that under the current land use fabric and local climate change scenarios, the mitigation of temperature can be up to 8 °C., at 2080 year. Based on the results, we conclude that dynamic modeling is a useful and an applicable tool, in the urban planning process of adaptation to climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
