Objectives: The article provides a vision of the Europeanisation of Spanish water policy in the new reference framework set by the European Green Deal (2019) and following the European Commission’s decision to revalidate the environmental commitments contained in the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and urges Member States to comply with them. Methodology: The article follows a deductive model, analyses three key aspects of European water governance in the Spanish case, uses reports and opinions from European and Spanish institutions, as well as secondary sources from major analysts in water governance and Europeanisation processes. Results: The historical trajectory of water management in Spain has left its mark on the current system with special emphasis on Integrated Water Resources Management, the ecological approach and the interweaving of social, technological and natural aspects, it has affected in decision-making, which has had an impact on the process of convergence with Europe. Conclusions: The progressive national adjustments in environmental and climate battle are strongly promoted by the EU can contribute to a change in Spanish water management in order to implement the WFD. This paper analyzes women's participation in the struggle against mining extractivism in Soconusco, Chiapas. Data were obtained through a survey, interviews and two workshops. The paper compares two communities (Jalapa and Independencia) which were crucial to achieve the shutting down of the mines, with emphasis on the community structures that organized the protests, the ways in which women participated in them, and the implications of their participation. Jalapa reports the loss of water rights and stigmatization of women, while in Independencia the main problem was their silencing. The paper concludes that movements in defense of the territory must be more inclusive and open to women's needs and interests in order to respond more effectively to the threat represented by extractivist projects. This article deals with water management in Mexicali linked to the surface sources of the Colorado River and the underground Mexicali Valley aquifer, both of which span the border. The authors examine the environmental and social implications that government decisions about the Constellation Brands beer mega-project will have in a semi-arid area threatened by climate change. Using a water governance framework and a qualitative research approach, they conclude that the mega-project promotion was implemented failing to include local social actors. In this paper, it is analyzed how territorial marginalization affects water distribution in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico. Making irreversible damage, the water supply has been obtained by the exploitation of the Mexico Valley aquifers. This research establishes that the water distribution has been prioritized for the center of the country: Mexico City. The shortage of water and socio-environmental problems in the Mexico State are magnifying due to the unfair water distribution with the suburbs even though the population growth increases rapidly in the area. The objective is to describe, by primary documentary sources, how territory influences the water distribution while analyzing the governmental and citizen intervention for improving this situation. The quality of water from any specific source can be evaluated by measuring physical, chemical and biological parameters. Those values, when compared with regulatory limits, determine the danger to human and ecosystem health. However, this technique can involve high costs and operational complications. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are useful tools for evaluating environmental problems in a hydrographic basin, making strong estimates for the identification and analysis of possible impacts on water quality, based on in the holistic study of the environmental characteristics and dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover Change. The aim of this research was to analyze the environmental fragility of the Sinú river basin due to water resource contamination, as a tool for strengthening water governance and the water resources integral management. A water quality map by Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method was made from Water Quality Index (WQI) results. Afterward, a survey among experts was carried through the Analytical Hierarchical Method (AHP) to assess the environmental attributes that constitute the map. The results showed the Sinú river basin has a very homogeneous average quality throughout its trajectory, and the most fragile areas are located in the lower Sinú region. This indicates the importance of direct mitigation measures that allow ecological restoration promote adaptation to change climate and strengthen the integral water resource management. The Large Technological System (LTS) is a central concept in the epistemologies of Action-Network Theories (ant), related with poststructuralist epistemologies, and an important tool for the analysis of territorial systems. In this paper, we will use the lts concept to examine the hydrologic system of the Metropolitan Area of Bogotá, making emphasis on three aspects: the natural structure, the technological complex, and the normative framework. The goal was to explore the metropolitan geopolitics of water use in La Sabana de Bogotá and the particularities in the water governance, highlighting the incidence of municipalism and the interaction of a wide group of private, governmental, and civic actors. It was examined the physical infrastructure provided by the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá (eab-esp) that works as a quasi-monopoly actor in water management as well as their interaction with the highly autonomous municipalities. Other actors such as the real estate, floriculture, mining, and dairy activities was included in the analysis. The report gives special attention to the highly complex relationships between them and how they work in a complex and multiscale normative framework. The text concludes emphasizing the different challenges of water governance in a context of rapid metropolisation, complexing economic relations and climate and environmental change. The small hydropower plants (SHP) are considered clean and renewable technologies. There is a plan to build forty hydroelectric projects in the eastern part of the Department of Caldas, of which four have an environmental license. The objective of this article is to analyze the environmental impacts related to these projects and to demonstrate the social resistance of the affected communities. The methodology applied was qualitative with an interpretative approach and the data were obtained through field work and secondary sources for four years. It is concluded that hydroelectric projects described as run-of-river are not of low impact because they generate loss of flows and water scarcity, violating the rights of the rural population, factors that result in a revictimization of communities that envision to live in decent conditions in time of post-conflict, not only opposed to these projects but also their actions and demands are oriented to the governance of water in their territories. The introduction of water governance to the Colombian ordering and the high sociological potential for conflict are the foundation of those analyses which links nature with human rights. From a dogmatic-descriptive and analytical research perspective, this articles proposes a link between water governance with human rights via the integration of a series of law standards linked to the Escazú Agreement and the human right to water, Among the findings, the research identified: a deficient ruling of participation and information access, a lack of knowledge from the public, some limitation on deliberation and demotivation for agreements, as well as a lack of effective integration of groups in vulnerable condition. This article describes different international water governance structures that influence or are the context for Mexico's water policy. By analyzing the main international water bodies, the author constructs four ideal-typical governance models: global, transnational, multilateral, and bilateral-cross-border. His main finding is that the greatest international influence on Mexico's water policy is its impact on the governmental agenda. This is due to the fact that, along with many other countries, Mexico has adopted different international commitments like the Millennium Development Goals, and now the Sustainable Development Goals, including strategies for climate change mitigation and comprehensive water resource management. This article contributes theoretical tenets for teaching and research on the issue of water governance, management, and policy. During the last decades, different perspectives have emerged to respond to the challenges related to water management. This paper presents an introduction to the main theoretical approaches that currently are deployed to study water management and governance: new institutionalism, common-pool resources theory, and the empowerment perspective that is related to political ecology. The description of these approaches aims at contextualizing the different contributions presented in this special issue, several of which focus on the analysis of hydrosocial territories. Water is the fundamental source that allows the reproduction of life on the planet, including human life. Because it is one of the common goods that are vital to humanity, everyone must be allowed access to it in sufficient quantity and quality for their well-being. But this definition is not hegemonic, but rather the subject of a dispute: on one hand, the appropriation of water governance as a commodity by corporations; and, on the other hand, the empowerment of civil society as common good. Controversies generated by El Zapotillo dam, in the occidental state of Jalisco, México, have led to a series of civil society negative affectations. Admittedly, conditions of drought and water scarcity make megaprojects necessary. In this article, a political ecology view is taken to analyze the intractable conflict generated by El Zapotillo, in an attempt to map power relations and inequalities that are accentuated in a context where technocratic responses to solve water stress come from hierarchical institutions and systemic structure that makes governance decisions top-down and not bottom-up, ignoring communities' opinions. In the Tropical Andes of Peru and adjacent lowlands, human livelihoods are exposed to strong changes in hydroclimatic and socioeconomic patterns. On the one hand, climate change impacts are particularly visible by means of glacier retreat and growth of glacier lakes. With decreasing ice masses in highly glacierized catchments, river discharge probably diminishes and its streamflow variability increases. On the other hand, growing energy demand promotes extensions of hydropower plants and thus a major need to rely on a predictable minimum discharge during the whole year. Additionally, the expansion of irrigated agriculture and population growth exert new pressures in the catchments. The antagonistic situation of successively depleting water supply and growing water demand put at future water availability risk. This study analyzes the current state of water supply in the Santa (Ancash, La Libertad) and Vilcanota (Cusco) river catchments. The water balance in both catchments is embedded in the framework of Integrated Water Resources Management and the new Water Resources Law. Multiple water conflicts which prevail in Peru, make the need of water resources management visible with pathways towards more participative, secure and sustainable water management. Intertwined and complex hydroclimatic and socioeconomic processes with high uncertainty in the Andes of Peru could be tackled with Adaptive Water Management in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, the human right to water paradigm has brought along heated debates with regards to the vital marketization. In an era when drinking water supply for human consumption is under serious threat due to climatic change, when the world debate is centered on topics of water (in) security, it comes as a surprise that bottled water consumption in Mexico has had such an exponential growth, given its position as one of the countries with the highest degree of water insecurity worldwide. In this article, I present an analysis of the process of privatization of water supply in Mexico, focusing specifically on the extraction, bottling and distribution of bottled water. Using the policy regime framework as an analytical tool, in the article I show that growing consumption of bottled water in Mexico is the result of the convergence of specific ideas with regard to tap water drinkability, a weakened institutional structure that yields against the enormous pressure of multinational bottled water supply companies, and the huge strength both marketing-wise and politically-wise that water bottling corporations are able to harness. The analysis presented here shows that academic discussions on privatization of water supply in Mexico have put aside the enormous growth of bottled water as a business, with the resulting marketization of water resources.
