We present a list of observations on ectoparasites of the Argentine herpetofauna reported in different publications from 1928 to 2022. A bibliographic search was carried out in electronic databases such as SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), Dialnet, and Google Scholar. In total, 30 articles published in national and international journals were included. Our list contains records for 54 hosts: 36 reptiles and 18 amphibians. The registered parasites correspond to mites from the families Trombiculidae, Pterygosomatidae, Leeuwenhoekiidae, Ereynetidae and ticks from the families Ixodidae and Argasidae. In total, 4 species of Amblyomma, 1 Ornithodoros, 7 Hannemania, 2 Eutrombicula, 2 Lawrencarus and 2 Neopterygosoma were recorded. Of the total number of reptiles mentioned for Argentina (425 species), 36 species have been registered with some type of ectoparasite, with the lizards of the Liolaemidae family presenting the highest records. The ectoparasites with the highest records in reptiles are ticks of the genus Amblyomma spp. For amphibians, out of 170 species mentioned, only 18 species have been recorded with some type of ectoparasite, with frogs from the Leptodactylidae family being the ones with the highest records. The ectoparasites with the highest records in amphibians are mites of the genus Hannemania. This work is the first compilation of ectoparasites in the Argentine herpetofauna. This compilation will help to understand the current ectoparasitic situation in reptiles and amphibians, allowing the development of new management plans for species with conservation problems. Ceroplastes Gray is one of the most important genus within the Coccidae family. In the present preliminary study in guava crops (Psidium araca L.) in the municipality of Montería-Córdoba, Colombia, the behavior of Ceroplastes floridensis (Comstock) was analyzed and its main parasitoid insects were taxonomically identified. The specimens were obtained through captures using entomological nets, suction flasks, and samples of the host insect collected in the field from stems, branches, and leaves. The identification and preservation of individuals was carried out in the Entomology Laboratory of the University of Córdoba. It was identified a Hymenoptera: Formicidae (Azteca sp.) as a dispersal agent associated with nymphs of C. floridensis and as parasitoid insects to the species Metaphycus sp.; Metaphycus marensis; Metaphycus helvolus; Diaphorencyrtus sp.; Copidosoma sp.; Chrysocharis flacilla; Chrysocharis pentheus, Tetrastichus sp., Aprostocetus sp. Objective. To identify mites in Diptera in a wooded area of Sabanalarga, Department of Antioquia, Colombia. Materials and methods. Two "stable flies" (Stomoxys calcitrans) were collected in a corral used temporarily to move cattle located in a wooded area of the municipality of Sabanalarga, Antioquia-Colombia. The flies were stored in Eppendorf tubes containing 70% ethyl alcohol for further processing. In the laboratory, the flies were identified, and then the mites they carried on their ventral area were removed and counted. Subsequently, the mites were stored in 70% ethyl alcohol to be rinsed on slides and identified under a light microscope. Results. A total of 15 specimens of a mite of the order Mesostigmata, family Macrochelidae of the species Macrocheles muscaedomesticae, parasitizing the flies S. calcitrans, were identified. Conclusions. This is the first report on the parasitic association between phoretic mites Macrocheles muscaedomesticae and stable flies Stomoxys calcitrans in Sabanalarga, Antioquia-Colombia. In Ecuador, knowledge of isopod parasitism on fish is scarce. To date, only four species of this order are known to parasitize fish in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Here we present the first infestation records of Telotha henselii on loricariids in the Ecuadorian Amazon region, based on specimens collected in the Quimi River, southeast of the country. Telotha henselii is a hematophagous ectoparasite, located mainly in the gill cavity or in the musculature of fish. Parasitic intensity varied from one to two isopods per host and the prevalence was 16.6 % in Chaetostoma breve and 12.5 % in Chaetostoma carrioni. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The antagonistic capacity of native strains of Trichoderma spp. against Verticillium dahliae, under different culture and incubation conditions. The isolation and molecular identification of antagonistic native strains and the phytopathogen were carried out. They were evaluated in two in vitro tests, using ADP culture medium in two pH conditions and incubated under two lighting conditions. By means of dual culture techniques, a trial was carried out with a completely randomized design with a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, and microcultures. The antagonistic capacity of two native strains of Trichoderma, TT (T. hamatum) and M5A (T. hamatum) on the native phytopathogen strain (Verticillium dahliae) was evaluated. The results obtained showed that the TT strain at pH 6.5 with 16 h light / 8 h Darkness had the shortest Contact Time and the highest Growth Inhibition Percentage with 8 h of light /16 h. of darkness. Class 1 was obtained in both tests and treatments, both being efficient in the competition for substrate and space. It was observed that the native strain M5A and the standard strain TT, parasitize the phytopathogen. Therefore, it is concluded that the TT strain has greater antagonistic attributes against the phytopathogen V. dahliae, under conditions of 8 h light / 16 h dark. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fungal diseases in plants are a significant concern in agricultural production. Macrofungi are a potential source of antifungal compounds that could be used to control these diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro biocontrol activity of four macrofungi of the genus Xylaria, Agrocybe, Psilocybe and Stereum on different plant pathogenic fungi. For this purpose, the growth curve of macrofungi was determined on two carbon sources: potato dextrose and wheat bran. Interactions and the in vitro inhibition on phytopathogenic fungi were also characterized. Subsequently, extraction and characterization of secondary metabolites of the intracellular, extracellular and filtrate of homogenized of mycelia and broth culture were performed only on the fungi that showed higher inhibition percentage. Finally, the in vitro antifungal activity of these extracts was evaluated. Growth curves changes with the carbon source and three of four isolates show more considerable accumulation of biomass in potato dextrose than wheat bran, reaching the stationary growth phase in a long time. Xylaria interactions were classified mostly as a replacement, obtaining the highest level of antagonism on potato dextrose. Two of the three extracts assessed showed antifungal activity in all three pathogens isolated at concentrations of 18 µg/ml for biomass methanol extracts and 2.5% for filtrate of homogenized of mycelia with inhibitions from 10 to 80%. Characterization of the metabolites of Xylaria showed fatty acids as possible compounds responsible for the antifungal activity. The causes for confiscation of swine livers, kidneys and hearts at a slaughter house from the Meat Company in the province of Ciego de Avila, Cuba, were determined. The evaluation comprised 90 913 animals. The main causes of condemnation were the so called milk spots and cysticercosis in the liver, parasitic lesions produced by Stephanurus dentatus, and others in the kidneys, such as renal cysts, contamination and nephritis, and the occurrence of pericarditis. Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae, the so-called sea lice, may be deleterious to marine or brackish finfish aquaculture. To date, biological and ecological studies of sea lice have been mostly restricted to species from cold or temperate regions. In Mexico there are some records of sea lice species on marine fishes; however, the research regarding their biology and ecology has been scarce. It is possible that a high biodiversity of sea lice is distributed in coastal waters of Mexico; therefore, their significance as pathogenic parasites should increase. The purpose of this review is to outline the current knowledge of the life cycle, host location, ecology, effect on fish health, and control strategies of sea lice in order to establish supportive basis for natural resource management and control of parasites and diseases of marine fish cultured in Mexico. Coleopteran Aethina tumida Murray behaves as an opportunist parasite of honey bee hives in Sub-Saharan Africa, but dangerous in world areas with different honey bee ecotypes. In Cuba, it was reported in 2012, in Apis mellifera L. colonies, without significant injuries. In Africa and Australia, it has been observed in stingless bee hives. Between 2011-2014, a deep inspection of 270 wild and managed hives of the stingless bee Melipona beecheii Bennett, known in Cuba as «Abeja de la Tierra», was carried out. Adult parasites were detected in one of 12 wild hives (8,33%), associated to the physic damage of the cover due to the human predatory action. Seven of 258 managed hives were parasitized (2,71%), two of them with larvae and adults, and only five with adult parasites. Parasitism was associated to the physical damage and recent new founding colonies, so special attention should be paid to these practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By comparing their population parameters, fecundity and sex ratio, we examined the performance of four genetically variable populations of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, two highly inbred pure lines (98%) with low and high performance (2 and 43 respectively) and two genetically variable lines (product of 26 inbred lines) with 2 or 40 generations. The population parameters determined were Ro, T, and λ as rm and fertility, and the overall results indicate significant differences between all the lines. The genetically variable line with two generations had the best performance, then the genetically variable with 40 generations, then line 43 and finally the pure line 2. Fertility and sex ratio were observed at 48 h and compared to overall. After 48 hours, no significant differences were found in fertility between the genetically variable lines to pure line 43. After 48 h, the sex ratio did not differ significantly between the two genetically variable lines and the pure line 43. However, total sexual ratios showed higher number of males in the genetically variable lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Apanteles nr. Aristoteliae (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an endoparasitoid of the leafroller Amorbia sp. (Lepdidoptera: Tortricidae) larvae. In this study, the life cycle, parasitism, sex ratio, and longevity of adults of this parasitoid were determined under laboratory conditions (22 ± 2 °C, 60 ± 5% relative humidity, and a photoperiod of 16:8h [light:dark]). The life cycle of this parasitoid was 42.45 ± 0.76 days. The duration of development stages of egg-larva, pupa and adult was 14.04 ± 0.05, 9.22 ± 0.07, and 19.36 ± 0.74 days, respectively. Each A. nr. aristoteliae female parasitized 73.33 ± 7.55 Amorbia sp. larvae. The sex ratio of FI generation was 95.1% males (n = 912). Longevity of adults was significantly different (U = 564, P = 0.01) between mated males (27 ± 2.55 days) and virgins (19.75 ± 0.70 days) but not (U = 182, P = 0.3) between mated females that were exposed to parasitization during all its life (26.4 ± 2.88 days), and virgins (23.13 ± 1.4 days). In order to obtain a better understanding about life parameters of A. nr. aristoteliae, future studies that include different rearing conditions (e.g., temperature and space) are needed. An analysis of the effect of climate changes on the risk of parasitic disease caused by pathogenic agents is carried out. Climatic changes appear to influence on the temporal and spatial distribution, as well as seasonal and interannual dynamics of pathogens, vectors, hosts and reservoirs. For some protozoan parasites of humans, transmitted by vectors, temperature is a critical factor that depends on the density and the capacity vector. Parasitic diseases (dog babesiosis and dog anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis and leishmaniasis), transmitted by vector-borne, such as ixodid by hematophagous habits, have started to change their epidemiology (geographic distribution, incidence and pathogenicity). In our experience with Anocentor nitens and Amblyomma cajennese, temperature has a direct influence on the processes cotoquia and protoquia. In the second case, it was found that when temperature rises to four degrees, these events get shorter. Some helminths studied modulate the exogenous phase and when temperature rises, their population and infection rates increase. In the case of zoonotic diseases, the pathogen and vector may be present in a given area, but also the presence of different vertebrate reservoirs to humans is required, which can be a factor that restricts the geographical spread in areas where climate conditions are favorable. Fasciolosis causes high economical losses for the agricultural sector and it is considered as emerging or re-emerging zoonosis due to its increasing impact on public health. Since there is a high prevalence of bovine fasciolosis in Huambo, despite any case reported in humans, it is important to know the potential risk factors for public health. A questionnaire was made for this purpose, and 195 animal breeders of eight municipalities in Huambo were interviewed. Although the persons dedicated to animal husbandry are women, they only represented the 15.9% among the persons interviewed, thus the sanitary education programs should give them priority. The 57.95% of the breeders (113) referred to parasitism in their animals, and the 86.5% indicated it as death cause. Farms had bovines in 86.2% and a 24.6% living with ewes, goats, or both species, which influenced in parasitism (84.1%) (p<0.047). The treatment of infected herds (72.6%) (with chemicals or medicinal herbs) was not effective, and it acted as a risk factor (OR: 54.91, p<0.001), as well as the lack of the veterinary assistance (p<0.05). Most of breeders (69.0%) use medicinal herbs for animal treatment, and their potential contamination with metacercaries may be a risk for the persons which use the traditional medicine. There was a relationship between the parasites in leaf form and those localized in the liver (p<0.05). So, the possible presence of Fasciola sp. in the 41.03% of farms was inferred. The reference of parasites like fasciolas showed a strong relationship with the animal parasitism (OR: 7.18, p<0.05). The risks for human fasciolosis commonly using water sources by animals and the consumption of crops with animal access were also discussed. It is highlighted that all breeders referred to familiar parasitism; in both adults and children (71.8%). Also the 76.9% of breeders considered parasitism as an important disease, while the 92.8% showed interest in more information for its prevention and control. It was shown that parasitism was important either in animals or in persons in Huambo; and it was inferred that Fasciola sp. is a relevant part into the etiological mosaic associated to this sanitary problem. Introduction: Blastocystis hominis is a protozoan that lives in the human bowel. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of B. hominis in schoolchildren of the shantytown "Enrique Montenegro", San Juan de Lurigancho district, Lima, Peru. Material and methods: It was processed 84 fecal samples from children between 6 and 11 years old. Direct exam and sedimentation technique of Ritchie was utilized. Results: Were registered 34 (40.4%) positive cases for B. hominis. No differences by sex was observed (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The B. hominis presence was high in the group studied. This work is a research about social parasitism. There's not a good bibliography on this subject, but it's posible to ask for an antropology of the social parasite using disciplines like Economy, Sociology and Social Psychology, and using too some authors in the border of the antropology. Our work is also an historical one. We can establish that the problem of social parasitism was born at the end of the 19th century, and that now is more or least a general one. Nowadays, the parasite is the perverse. At the same time, USA becomed the land of parasitism. We consider that our work opens a good perspectiva to future research on this subject. Population fluctuation and percentages of parasitism were determined for Copitarsia decolora (Guenée), Plutella xylostella L. and Trichoplusia ni Hübner on three varieties of B. oleracea, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, from April 2004 trough April 2005, in Acatzingo, Puebla, Mexico. Every 14 days randomized samplings in 10 plants by crop were made; the total number of larvae were recorded, collected and maintained in a rearing room at 27° C ± 1° C and 75% ± 5% of relative humidity for parasitoid development. The pest population was more abundant during head formation in cabbage and pellet formation in broccoli and cauliflower. The greatest density was observed in cabbage, with values of 1.3, 12.3 and 2.4 larvae by plant, for C. decolora, P. xylostella and T. ni, respectively. Diadegma insulare Cresson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was obtained from P. xylostella larvae, whereas Voria ruralis Fállen (Diptera: Tachinidae) was obtained from T. ni larvae. The mean rate of parasitism for D. insulare was 46.78% and for V. ruralis only 0.7%. The population density and rates of parasitism were negatively affected by insecticide application on the crops of broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the infestation degree and corporal distribution of the chigger Eutrombicula alfreddugesi on the lizard Sceloporus couchii in a population of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, México. Most lizards had acari; however, the mean number of acari for males was significantly higher than the mean for females. There was not significant relationship among the snout-vent length, weight and the total number of acari in both sexes, probably indicating that this parasite does not influence the physical condition of this lizard. The analysis of the corporal distribution showed that the region where the acari were most concentrated was in the post femoral pockets, followed by the neck region and the axillary region. Sixteen horses were sampled at a livestock center from Santa Clara, Cuba, to find out Gasterophilus spp. intensity and extension. Data were statistically processed through the Statgraphics plus 5.1 software. Out of the 16 horses examined, 12 were infested by this parasite in a 75 % extension range. Total intensity rate amounted 1 122 parasites, i.e., 93 parasites per animal. Thus, economic losses were remarkable due to the high levels of Gasterophilus spp. intensity and extension. Applications of Trichoderma asperellum Samuels strain T.13 from the Mycological Collection of the Centro Nacional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (CENSA) in protected crops to control of Passalora fulva (Cooke) U. Braun & Crous (Syn. Cladosporium fulvum Cooke), causal agent of the leaf mold on tomato, and of Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley et Curtis) Rostovzew, a pathogen that produces downy mildew on cucumber crop, showed a high effectiveness in reducing the affected area by the pathogens and the parasitism of conidiophores in P. cubensis. These results endorse the use of this biological control agent in order to diminish the damage caused by these diseases on tomato and cucumber crops under this condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sixteen horses of different ages and body weights were slaughtered at a livestock center to assess parasitosis intensity and extension caused by Anoplocephala perfoliata. Small and large intestines were examined. In terms of parasitic invasion, results revealed an extension rate of 87,5 %, while intensity rate fluctuated between 80 and 450 parasites per animal. Taking into account that each horse was purchased at a price of 1 800 pesos (national currency), but its value dropped by 25 % after being infested by A. perfoliata, such a loss amounted 7 200 pesos for the 16 horses.
