- Abstract
This book provides a practical introduction to questions about bilingualism. It is for parents and teachers who are themselves bilingual, for monolinguals who want to know more, for those with some intuitive understanding of bilingual situations and for those who are starting from the very beginning. The book poses questions that people often ask about raising bilingual children and then provides straightforward answers written in direct, plain, nontechnical language. The book deals with questions about family education, language issues, and other problems that commonly arise. Answers are intended to raise awareness of what challenges may be faced as bilingual family life develops and what decisions have to be made. The book is divided into six sections, each of which is divided into one to four page subsections consisting of a question and its answer. Sections concern family, language development, problems, reading and writing, education, and concluding issues. Also included is a glossary of terms and an index. References to other sources are provided as needed throughout the text. (KFT)

- Abstract
Two studies on the phonology of Spanish spoken by Cubans in the United States are critically analyzed. The studies are: "Markedness and a Cuban Dialect of Spanish," by Jorge M. Guitart, and "Some Theoretical Implications from Rapid Speech Phenomena in Miami-Cuban Spanish," by Robert M. Hammond. The methodologies of Hammond and Guitart are critically examined and corrections are made of certain inaccuracies in their descriptions of Havana Spanish. The five sections of the analysis include: (1) general observations on Hammond's thesis, (2) a description of the educated Spanish of Havana, (3) a description of the people who speak the educated Spanish of Havana, (4) errors in the description of the educated Spanish, and (5) retroflex consonants of Havana Spanish. It is argued that the term "Miami Cuban Spanish" may be misleading since there are many dialects of Cuban Spanish and the people interviewed in Miami were from different parts of Cuba. (NCR)

- Abstract
This research is an analysis of the French and Spanish phonological, phonetic, and graphemic systems. A contrastive analysis is used to show the differences that can create problems to the Spanish speaker learning French. For the benefit of Spanish speakers, all of the materials included have been prepared in Spanish. The first chapter defines the problem of teaching French to the Spanish speaker. The second chapter reviews the literature about French and Spanish phonology and morphology. The third chapter discusses the vocalic and consonantal differences between the two languages, followed by: (1) a solution to help Spanish speakers learn the new phonemes and allophones, and (2) appropriate phological and phonetic drills. The fourth chapter discusses the differences in intonation and includes practice drills. (Author/NCR)

SPEECH , *SPANISH language , *PHONEME (Linguistics) , *CONSONANTS , *PHONETICS - Abstract
This paper is a first approach to flapping in Spanish. This phenomenon has been traditionally associated with /l/, but recent research has revealed that it is also possible with other coronal consonants, namely /n, d, s/. With this data in mind, we have carried out an acoustic study based on the analysis of a spontaneous speech corpus. Its main goal has been to examine if the flap is a possible allophone for these phonemes and, in case it is, to account for its context of emergence. In addition, it is also interesting to determine whether rhotic sounds can be a widespread realization for coronal segments in weakening contexts. The results show that all of the phonological categories investigated display [ɹ] or [ɹ̝] allophones, especially in unstressed medial intervocalic positions (in spite of some differences between categories), which are contexts generally related to weakening. In any case, it seems that rhotic sounds are common realizations in lenition situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LANGUAGE teachers , *COMPUTATIONAL linguistics , *SPANISH language , *PHONETICS , *LINGUISTIC change , *SOCIOLINGUISTICS - Abstract
The article "Advances in Linguistics and their Didactic Application" summarizes the main contributions of various linguistic disciplines and proposes exercises for Spanish language and literature teachers to apply these theoretical contents in their classrooms. The text is divided into two sections: traditional linguistic disciplines and cross-cutting linguistic disciplines, addressing aspects such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The book also covers topics such as language change, language acquisition, and computational linguistics, showing the connection of linguistics with other disciplines and its relevance in the school curriculum. Overall, the book offers an updated synthesis of linguistic disciplines and their didactic application, being a useful tool for the teaching of the Spanish language. [Extracted from the article]

LANGUAGE policy , *SOCIAL impact , *PHONETICS , *PROSODIC analysis (Linguistics) , *LANGUAGE & languages - Abstract
Although the great utility that phonetic-phonological competence generates in language teaching has been proven, as well as its importance in the communicative process, it has traditionally been relegated to the background. The CEFR involved the preparation of a language policy instrument with the aim of achieving European brotherhood and respect and tolerance among its members. However, the role of phonic competence was minimal, which meant the loss of the opportunity to take advantage of the social implications that language conveys through phonetics. Likewise, other negative aspects are attributed to it, such as the absence of prosody, conceptual inaccuracy or the role of accent as an error, among others. Consequently, the Council of Europe requested a critical report that has recently led to the publication of a companion volume of the CEFR, which updates and clarifies especially the phonological component. In this work, a critical review of this new document is made in relation to the main reference texts. The main conclusion is that great progress has been made in important aspects, but it is still necessary to strengthen concepts and highlight the role of phonetics more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an analysis of the segmental phonological system of Maleku (Guatuso) on the basis of previously published phonological and phonetic descriptions. It has a particular focus on the distinctive features that contrast the phonemes, since no other publication has addressed this topic in detail before. In the patrimonial consonantal system, a total equivalence is established between the values of the features [sonorant] and [voice] if the phoneme classified as a voiced palatal fricative is considered a "sonorant fricative". On the other hand, in the innovative system, which incorporates four phonemes borrowed from Spanish, the contrastivity of the feature [voice] is activated due to the introduction of voiced stop phonemes that contrast with the unvoiced stops. The present work focuses on the analysis of the intonative prenucleus, specifically of the patterns followed by the fundamental frequency (F0) in what refers to the initial high peak (PMx1). Traditionally, it has been considered that the nucleus concentrates the greatest load of information within the sentence. Although this segment is, without a doubt, of extreme importance when approaching F0, it has also been seen that the prenucleus presents certain patterns that can help to better understand how sociolinguistic variables influence prosody. Our analysis takes two diatopic varieties which are close to each other, both geographically and historically, as well as regarding intonation: Cuban and Venezuelan Spanish. In previous works it has been highlighted that both varieties hold a close similarity in the nucleus of the sentence. We intend to determine if the behaviour of the PMx1 establishes differences between them, as well as diaphasic differences by alternating the speech register used (laboratory speech and semi-spontaneous speech). We use a psychoacoustic threshold of 1.5 St (Rietveld & Gussenhoven 1985; Pamies et al. 2002) and the Autosegmental-Metrical model as stated in Dorta et al. (2013) and in Dorta and Díaz (2018). Furthermore, we approach the possible interrelation between overshooting and other intonation indices (duration and intensity). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHONEME (Linguistics) , *PHONETICS , *SPANISH language , *ITALIAN language , *CROSS-sectional method , *PRONUNCIATION , *SECOND language acquisition - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study the phonetic acquisition of the pronunciation of the voiced bilabial plosive phoneme/b/, one of the phonemes that poses the greatest problems for the Italian learner in contrast to Spanish, in a context of formal didactics through its use in task-oriented dialogues (corpus E.L.E.I.). The methodology used to study the use and evolution of the pronunciation of this phoneme in the dialogues of the corpus is the longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis in three years. In the results, we can point out that some of the variables involved in the acquisition of this phonetic segment were studied, providing a quantitative and qualitative analysis. This method allowed us to compare our observations with previous work. We conclude that the diatopic phonetic variety of L1 significantly influences interlanguage in ELE. In addition, formal didactics of phonetics promotes awareness of the function of the sounds of the L2 over the L1 and helps to eradicate fossilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORICAL linguistics , *SPANISH language , *ETYMOLOGY , *PREJUDICES , *PRONUNCIATION , *ENCYCLOPEDIAS & dictionaries , *GLOSSES & glossaries , *EVOLUTIONARY theories - Abstract
This work aims to present, discuss and assess the linguistic ideas of Alonso de Ulloa, an important figure in the cultural scene in Venice in the mid-16th century since he collaborated with different printers editing, compiling, or translating Spanish works. For this, three texts that Ulloa published with an explicitly didactic purpose as an appendix to the literary works that he published for the printer Giolito will be studied. The first text consists of some pronunciation rules for Spanish words, and the others are two concise Spanish-Italian dictionaries or glossaries that explicitly or implicitly include linguistic information. It will be seen that Ulloa often confirms or clarifies the knowledge we have about the evolutionary stage of the language of the time or the etymology of some word; other times, he provides relevant data and occasionally exposes theories based on prejudices or false convictions. PHONOLOGY , *PHONETICS - Abstract
This paper deals with the origin of the theory of español costeño and español andino, focusing on yeísmo and lleísmo, on the basis of which the theory was developed at the turn of the 19th century. I argue that the early conception of español costeño and español andino has strongly influenced the kind of research we have been conducting about the geographic varieties to this day. The aim of this study therefore, is to sharpen our understanding of the former zeitgeist of research and to stimulate further 'big data'-based studies on español costeño, español andino and español amazónico, the third Peruvian geographic variety, traditionally neglected by linguistic research. CONSONANTS ,PHONETICS ,VOWELS ,EXPLANATION ,HYPOTHESIS - Abstract
Judeo-Spanish presents some surprising results as regards the secondary evolution of the diphthong /ˈue/. Contrary to Spanish jueves 'Thursday', tuerto 'one-eyed', sueño 'dream', nuera 'daughter-in-law', Judeo-Spanish has ĵugüeves, tugüerto, (e)sfueño, and elmuera. That is, /ˈue/ has evolved either into /u.ˈgue/, it has developed a fricative before the diphthong (/ˈsue/ > /s.ˈfue/), or labialized the previous nasal (/ˈnue/ > /ˈmue/).In this study we present an explanation for this phenomenon that combines the regular Ibero-Romance phonic evolution and some language-specific features of the evolution of Judeo-Spanish, without an explicit appeal to exceptional solutions. Our hypothesis is based on the realization of the sequence /ˈue/ as a hiatus (ĵu.e.ves, tu.er.to, su.e.ño, nu.e.ra) which eventually developed an epenthetic consonant. This epenthesis was velar (ĵugueves, tuguerto), the latter case also involving further vowel insertion in agreement with the historical phonetics of Judeo-Spanish (ĵugüeves, tugüerto). Examples with labial fricatives or nasals preceding the diphthong have followed this evolution and then lost the pretonic vowel, giving way to a consonantal cluster in which the second consonant is partially assimilated to the first (sueño > *s(u)güeño > sfueño or esfueño; nuera > n(u)güera > *enmuera > elmuera, ermuera > muera). LINGUISTIC change , *PHONETICS , *LINGUISTIC context , *POLITICIANS , *SPANISH language , *POLITICAL oratory - Abstract
This research introduces a sociolinguistic study about a linguistic variation applied in diverse public contexts concerning performance of the following Andalusian politicians in Madrid: Juan Manuel Moreno, Susana Díaz, José Guirao and María Jesús Montero. Some linguistic and extralinguistic factors which characterize their political speech within public performance in the capital city of Spain, are represented here. On one hand, several linguistic changes that arose in the abovementioned cases will be observed, in particular, when they come into contact with standard Spanish. On the other hand, some speech acts performed by the same politicians in Andalusia will also be investigated in order to study their linguistic behavior in both contexts. Our results prove that various linguistic variations do actually occur during their discourses due to dissimilar public contexts. Nevertheless, the regional variant, particularly of Spanish spoken in Andalusia, is still the prevailing one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to present the multiple realizations of lower limit and
of speakers from different Spanish speaking territories found in the extensive oral corpus FEC (Fonología del Español Contemporáneo). We present several acoustic criteria to assign the continuum between occlusive and approximant to different phonetic variants to enable quantitative analysis of the corpus. The results of the acoustic analysis confirm the different phases described in previous literature of the phenomenon in the different Spanish speaking territories. Additionally, they show that a) palatal fricative realizations [?] - the IPA symbol commonly used for the phoneme - is very rare in the corpus and b) that in territories that distinguish between/?/and/j/, hybrid variants consisting of lateral + central that show a beginning delateralization are quite recurrent. This article describes the phonetic variation of the fricative phoneme /s/ in non-professional speakers from Santiago, Chile. It was found that the elision of the /s/ phoneme is the most common variant and is mainly conditioned by the occlusive consonant context. Additionally, it is observed that the aspiration and elision of the /s/ phoneme entail changes in syllabic structure and in the gemination of the involved consonants. These results have pedagogical implications in the teaching of Spanish as a first and foreign language, and demonstrate the existence of variation between professional speech and the speech of lower classes in Santiago, Chile. PHILOSOPHY of language , *PRINCIPLE (Philosophy) , *EXHIBITIONS , *LINGUISTICS , *VOCATION , *PHILOSOPHY of science - Abstract
Eugenio Coseriu's linguistics manifests a deep philosophical vocation, which is not based solely or primarily on the philosophy of language, but rather on the philosophy of linguistics. Due to Coseriu's concern for the scientific legitimacy of our discipline, it is possible to identify, in many of his works, the presence of the fundamental principles of the hermeneutical philosophy of science. Although these principles often do not gain prominence by themselves, but are subordinated to expositions focused on purely linguistic and non-philosophical issues, their presence is essential in publications such as Forma y sustancia en los sonidos del lenguaje, whose importance for the analysis of the epistemological dimension of the Coserian linguistics is revealed in the present work. One of the most relevant features of Romanian phonetics and phonology are the diphthongs/ea/and/oa/, which have aroused the interest of many researchers (Mussafia, 1868; Diez, 2021: 130-135; Miklosich, 2010; Meyer-Lübke, 1890; Iordan, 1920; Lombard, 1955; Petrovici, 1956, 1957, 1959; Rosetti, 1959; Vasiliu, 1968; Sala, 1976; Loporcaro, 2011; Sánchez Miret, 2013, among others). These contrast phonologically with the Spanish hiatus/e.a/and/o.a/. For this reason, in this study we want to analyze the possible pronunciation of Romanian Spanish learners taking into account seven university students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a consensus in the literature about the importance of adult scaffolding in the development of children's cognition and language skills (Bruner, 1986; Nelson, 1996; Vygotsky, 1978). This document analyzes first grade children's narrative development in order to verify the incidence of adult intervention and teaching methodology. For this purpose, the performance of two groups of children enrolled in first grade of school in the district of Quito was analyzed. Two different teaching methodologies were observed: while one of them exclusively adheres to the guidelines of the curriculum design proposed by the Ministry of Education, the other one incorporates strategies from the books Letters and Sounds I (Jara de Torres, 2001) and Learn and Write I (Jara de Torres, 2003) -adapted from the proposal by editorial Abeka. The narratives performed by the children at the beginning and at the end of the school year were analyzed and each performance of both groups was compared based on the amount of information retrieved and the type of information and linguistic resources used. The stories were presented to the children in audiovisual format (steady images and recorded voice). For task administration, the children were instructed to listen and look at the story very carefully because they had to recount it to a friend or family member. The children's remarks were recorded on audio for later analysis. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used in order to analyze and compare the linguistic and cognitive performance in the production of stories of the two groups of children in the different evaluation. Significant differences were observed in the variables analyzed, which provides evidence about the positive incidence of dialogic reading and the teaching of story production skills in narrative development. Differences in the performance of schools, especially in first graders, cannot be attributed to maturational factors since both groups are conformed by children of the same chronological age. Neither by the socioeconomic factors, since, in fact, group A was composed of children who attend a rural school and most of them happened to have low resources. Therefore, the significant improvement in the performance of the children of group A at the end of the school year could be attributed to the intervention of their teacher's work. It is thought that this advance in retell story skills is due to an improvement in the understanding of the basic story, however there are studies that observe that the level reached in this process does not directly affect the quality of children's narrative performance (Bustos Ibarra et al., 2014). In consequence, the improvement in the children's narrative performance of group A can be linked not only to the work carried out by the teachers with texts but also to the situations of story production involved. Many investigations have observed that adult scaffolding during story reading has a positive effect on children's linguistic and discursive development (Sénechal, Le Fevre, Hudson & Lawson, 1996; Trabasso & Nickels, 1992; Wasik & Bond, 2001; West et al., 2021). In fact, as Wells (1988) points out in a pioneering study, while reading stories contributes to children's linguistic development, the parallel text generated by teachers through their interventions to explain vocabulary, make inferences explicit, relate events and post-reading reconstruction has shown a greater effect than just reading any kind of story aloud. Thereupon, the results obtained in this work show the relevance not only of the teacher's texts daily reading but, mainly, of the intervention strategies and methodologies that they use to promote comprehension and textual production in the classroom. GAY identity , *PHONETICS , *GAY men , *GAY people , *SEXUAL orientation , *LANGUAGE & languages , *SPEECH , *COMMUNICATION , *SPANISH language , *SPEECH perception , *INTELLIGIBILITY of speech - Abstract
This bibliographical review includes 69 sociophonetic studies on male gay speech in order to gain insight into which acoustic parameters characterise both gay speakers and those speakers who, regardless of their sexual orientation, are perceived as gay. The sample of languages included here make up a total of 13 languages, some with a larger number of varieties, such as English or Spanish. In many of these languages the production or perception of gay speech has been found to be significantly different in its fundamental frequency, in F1 and F2 of some vowels, and in the spectral characteristics and duration of certain sibilant fricatives. However, the disparity of results does not allow to identify a clear set of parameters associated with male gay speech. The acoustic features characterising gay speech in a given speech community may not coincide with those in another, especially since the way in which gay identity is socially constructed varies from place to place. Finally, gay speech is suggested to be analysed in specific varieties of different languages, including Spanish, from a multimodal perspective in order to minimise the disparity of results and to reflect more accurately the interactions between speakers in everyday communication. We aim to make a comparative analysis of the words which mean ‘daughter’ in Indo-European. The study of the phonetic correspondences assures the reconstruction of a common root which is the basis of this kinship term in the different Indo-European languages. The main etymological proposals for the subject will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Te Ckunza of the Lickan Antai people inhabiting Chile, Bolivia and Argentina has been declared extinct. However, it is argued that reconstructing the elements of the grammar could facilitate its revitalization. Tis paper seeks to account for these elements in the ckunza of San Pedro de Atacama. To this end, a review of the phonetic, phonological, lexical, semantic, morphological and syntactic elements of the Amerindian language will be provided. Tis analysis also informs about the agglutinative characteristic of Ckunza. Te corpus of this research comes from the samples collected by the pioneers in its study. Te aim of this review is to show the grammar of Ckunza, since its reconstitution will provide the rules that will allow the creation of new sentences that will contribute to its revitalization. Currently there is a vast evidence on the allophonic variation of the phoneme /tʃ/ in Chilean Spanish, associated to social factors. Nevertheless, these researches focused on adult population. With this consideration, this study aims to analyze the articulation of the /tʃ/ phoneme in a sample of 161 kids, from 2.0 to 3.11 years old who live the city of Temuco (Chile). The sample was divided per age and socioeconomic status. Among the main results, a variably between the groups has been observed, crossing the variables age and socioeconomic status. Concerning the allophonic variable of the /tʃ/ phoneme according to the socioeconomic status, there has also been evidenced a variable behavior between the groups. The results of this study are in concordance with the current discussions on the relationship between evolutionary acquisition processes and the emergence of social variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORPORA , *LINGUISTIC change , *PUBLIC sphere , *REGIONAL differences , *VOTERS , *PRESIDENTS - Abstract
This research presents a sociolinguistic study of the three presidents of democracy in Extremadura: Rodríguez Ibarra, Monago and Fernández Vara. Based on the compilation of an oral linguistic corpus of different interventions of the presidents in the political sphere (speeches, rallies) and in the public sphere (interviews they have given on national and regional radio and television), we will carry out a sociolinguistic investigation to check if there are similarities and differences between them. In addition, we will observe whether they use discursive strategies in their speeches. On the one hand, we will use phonetic variants of Extremaduran to find out which presidents are more or less conservative; on the other hand, from a constructivist perspective, we will check whether extralinguistic variables such as generation, and stylistic variables such as the type of discourse, the context in which they find themselves, or the audience they are addressing, modify their linguistic features. Our results show that there are indeed linguistic changes in some presidents, and the use of regional variants is beneficial in changing the perception that Extremadura's voters have of them. PHONOLOGICAL awareness , *BASIC education , *PHONEME (Linguistics) , *CHILDREN with dyslexia , *PUBLIC institutions , *RHYME - Abstract
Introduction: It is common to find among students who have learning difficulties, that this is accompanied by a deficit at the level of the reading processes, which makes it necessary to evaluate this complex and very important skill. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the phonological awareness skills as predictors of reading problems in transition children and first year of basic education, evaluated with the format: "Evaluation of Phonological Awareness (ECOFON)". Method: The sample consisted of 136 students from a Public Educational Institution of Sincelejo (Colombia). The research is descriptive of each of the components of phonological awareness. Results: obtaining as a result transition students obtained lower scores in the initial phoneme detection and suppression components. While the first-year students obtained the highest scores in segmentation and count of syllables, in the other components the scores were low. Conclusion: The results show that the phonological difficulties for rhyme at an early age are related to the reading domain; as well as the ignorance of the grapheme-phoneme relationship. This paper describes the acoustic characteristics of sound [s] in the cities of: Medellín and Apartadó and explores the hypothesis that the articulation of /s/ will serve to distinguish between the dialects spoken in these two areas. The study analizes 943 [s] produced by a total amount of 32 speakers. The following parameters were considered in the analysis: Center of gravity, spectral peak, standard deviation of the spectrum, skewness, kurtosis, zero crossings and harmonic-noise ratio. Results suggest that: in syllable onset [s] is more apical in Medellín and more dentalised in Apartadó. Also, Medellín’s onset [s] is more sibilant. In coda position, there is no difference between the two dialects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a contribution to the history of Spanish phonetics through the textual series on pronunciation that was developed at the Real Colegio de Deaf-mudos in Madrid in the 19th century. The work of Francisco Fernández de Villabrille, professor in the second half of the century in the center, shows how the previous materials (Juan Pablo Bonet) were used and adapted and what was their continuation (Carlos Nebreda), which constitutes a contribution to linguistic historiography in a stage and in a teaching center still little explored.
