Objective: To determine predictive factors of successful rehabilitation in patients with lower limb amputation who use a prosthetic device. Methods: A retrospective observational and non-probabilistic study was carried out among 70 patients who underwent transfemoral (AK) or transtibial amputation (BK) of vascular, oncologic, or traumatic origin at the Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación "Dra. Adriana Rebaza Flores" AMISTAD PERU-JAPON, Lima-Peru, from 2018 and 2019. Patients were interviewed, and clinical charts were reviewed. Successful rehabilitation was evaluated using Houghton's instrument. Results: 81.42% were males; the mean age was 48.76 ± 15.19 years; 35.71% had between 48 and 57 years of age. Successful rehabilitation was associated with age (p<0.01), BK amputation (p<0.001), traumatic origin (p=0.014), and absence of comorbidities (p<0.04). The only predictive factor of successful rehabilitation was BK amputation [OR=2.84, p<0.02). Conclusions: Factors associated with successful rehabilitation were age below 48 years, BK amputation, traumatic origin, and fewer comorbidities, but the only determinant was the level of amputation. MUSCLE tone , *PERIPHERAL nervous system , *NEUROREHABILITATION , *STRIATED muscle , *CENTRAL nervous system - Abstract
Striated muscle is an organized tissue that utilizes chemical energy to perform physical work, generated through muscle contraction. Proper muscle tone is essential for efficient movement and basic bodily functions. Clinical practice categorizes muscle tone alterations as hypertonia, an increase in tone in skeletal and/or smooth muscles, and hypotonia or flaccidity, a decrease in skeletal muscle tone. These terms are widely used in rehabilitation to denote decreased muscle tone. This study examined the etymological origins of the terms Hypotonia and Flaccidity and their respective definitions. Etymological research utilized the Diccionario Médicobiológico, histórico y etimológico and Diccionario Latino-Español Español-Latino. Spanish definitions were sourced in Diccionario de Términos Médicos de La Real Academia de Medicina de España; Diccionario de la Lengua española; Diccionario Panhispánico de Términos Médicos; Biblioteca Nacional Médica and Biblioteca Virtual de Salud de Centro Latinoamericano y del Caribe. The clinical use of these terms was assessed through neurology articles per authors' criteria. Consequently, Hypotonia is deemed the more suitable term for describing decreased muscle tone in rehabilitation contexts. Depending on the lesion's origin, terms like Central Hypotonia and Peripheral Hypotonia may be used when structures associated with the central or peripheral nervous systems are affected, respectively. It is suggested that these terms be adopted in clinical practice and teaching when addressing alterations in central or peripheral nervous systems resulting in reduced muscle tone. - Abstract
Introduction. The tension generated by the Kinesiological Tape is important in rehabilitation, although, currently, there is no tool that helps us determine the amount of tension force applied in treatments. It is important to have a more precise measure based on empirical evidence to optimize its use. Objective. Determine and compare the tension produced by kinesiological tapes of different sizes and colors. Materials and methods. Beige, blue, pink, and black rolls of kinesiological tapes were used to obtain five "Y" cuts of 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm, and 30 cm for each roll. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to determine normality of data; subsequently Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey to detect differences between groups. Results and conclusion. The tension produced, and the elastic constant of the tapes are different depending on the size and color, so it must be taken into consideration during the design and application of the treatments. - Abstract
The accelerated evolution of technology in the last decade has enabled breakthroughs in fields of science such as medicine, robotics, bionics and rehabilitation by integrating knowledge and techniques from these areas. Rehabilitation exoskeletons are examples of multidisciplinary integration in the development of physiotherapeutic intervention tools that have shown significant results in patients with neurological diseases. This systematic literature review presents the advances, developments and characteristics of these devices and their current situation, specifically those that have the greatest impact on their co-citation and co-occurrence so that the works integrated into the research are verifiable and reliable. This is done through the implementation of a methodology for the elaboration of the state of the art on the subject of rehabilitation exoskeletons, based on the implementation of scientific databases, systematised digital bibliometric tools and their systemic integration. The scientific literature on rehabilitation exoskeletons was compiled from papers published between January 2014 and 30 November 2023, which were retrieved from the Web of Science. The first stage was to define the inclusion and exclusion criteria in order to limit the search within the scientific database, and the second stage was to process the information and works obtained in order to process them using the CiteSpace software, as a result of this stage, the co-occurrence analysis was obtained, a graphical network was generated and a co-citation analysis, subsequently with the data obtained from the previous stages, the PRISMA method was implemented. As a third step, the results obtained from the 1511 publications and 108,512 reference citations dealing with rehabilitation exoskeletons are presented. A discussion of the main characteristics, advances, limitations, challenges and trends of these devices is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cerebral Palsy as a health condition associated with disability in childhood requires comprehensive care and involves various actors, thus, rehabilitation is configured as a key health process in which knowledge and practices converge in daily life whose experience makes sense from the peculiarities. The objective was to analyze the comprehensions of the rehabilitation process in cerebral palsy from the perspectives of a group of health professionals, caregivers and people with cerebral palsy. Material and method: qualitative study, socio-constructionist design, focus groups were used. The sample was purposeful of homogeneous cases, the theoretical saturation of the data was used as a criterion for collecting information. The qualitative content analysis was streamlined through a categorization and coding process. Results: 3 people with cerebral palsy, 4 caregivers and 9 health professionals participated, relating their comprehensions about the phenomenon; the emerging categories were cerebral palsy as «Condition of life», functioning and disability from «Processes, tools and autonomy»; as well as contextual factors from «Barriers» and «Opportunities». Conclusions: although the comprehensions of the process are diverse and depend on life experiences, there are meeting points that configure the importance that both functionality and social inclusion acquire. Introduction: shoulder plain is a common cause of complain, however a precise diagnosis is hard to achieve. This is why finding factors associated to a good prognosis could help to improve our clinical practice. Objective: to identify demographic and clinical characteristics from the initial assessment associated with substantial clinical benefit (SCB) in patients with shoulder pain one month after treatment or at patient's discharge. Material and methods: this was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort of patients with shoulder pain. Demographic and clinical (self-reported scales) factors associated with SCB at discharge or four weeks after the initial assessment, were analyzed. SCB was defined as a score ≥ +5 on a Global Rating of Change. A logistic regression model was made in order to identify predictors of SCB. The area under the curve ROC was used to assess the performance of the model with its independent variables. Results: 101 patients of 138 were analyzed. The median age was 55 (RIQ 37-61) years old, there were 55 (54.5%) women in the sample. The variables independently associated to SCB were fracture as a reason for admission [adjusted OR 11.8 (95% CI 1.4-101.8); p = 0.024], and durations of shoulder symptoms shorter than seven months [adjusted OR 4.63 (95% CI 1.9-11.1); p = 0.001]. Conclusion: the diagnosis of fracture and durations of shoulder symptoms shorter than seven months were independently associated with a SCB after one month of treatment or at the patient's discharge. Traffic accidents pose a significant challenge to public health worldwide. Each year, millions of people are injured or killed in vehicle collisions on roads, resulting in a considerable burden on healthcare systems and irreplaceable loss of human lives. The aim of this study was to analyze the findings on traffic accidents and their impact on public health through a review of available evidence. The study design was exploratory, documentary, and descriptive, involving a systematic literature search for full-text articles published in the past 5 years in indexed journals in scientific databases and search engines including PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Scielo, Scopus, Redalyc, Elsevier, and WOS, as well as official health websites, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Keywords used were "traffic accident", "costs", "public health", "rehabilitation", connected with AND OR operators with terms "traffic accident" relation "costs", "public health", "public health traffic accidents", "rehabilitation costs to public health traffic accidents". Ultimately, 21 articles were selected. Traffic accidents represent a global challenge with significant geographic variations. While men are typically more affected, women in Zambia face a higher risk. Prevention targeting specific demographic groups and consideration of factors such as vehicle condition and driver behavior are critical for enhancing road safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The intensive care units (ICU) and acute care units have been the containers for the advance of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, prolonged stay in this unit can impact patients' body composition (WC) and ability to exercise. This research aimed to determine if there is a relationship between body composition (BC) and the 6-minute walk test (6mWT). 17 people were recruited (8 women and 9 men). The following measurements were taken: 6mWT, its distance traveled (6mWTDT) and its speed (6mWTS) were considered. The WC variables measured were body mass index (BMI), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and lean mass (LM). 6mWTDT only showed a significant relationship with body LM (BLM). On the other hand, 6mWTS had a significant relationship with BLM. In addition to this, the FFM of the right lower limb and the FFM of the left lower limb showed a relationship with 6mWTS (r=0.422; p=0.041 and r=0.417; p=0.025, respectively). Also, the LM of the right lower limb and the LM of the left lower limb were significantly related to the 6mWTS (r=0.422; p=0.030 and r=0.420; p=0.042). In conclusion, there is a relationship between body composition and 6mWTS. This would allow us to quickly approach the level of functionality with which a patient enters a rehabilitation program. LABOR process , *PEOPLE with addiction , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *SOCIAL networks , *DRUG addiction , *SUPPORT groups - Abstract
The objective of this article is to give an account of the labor reintegration process in subjects in condition of drug addiction during their rehabilitation. Using a qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten people in addiction in rehabilitation. Those who were interviewed have more than 15 years of sobriety and are part of a self-help group that implements the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Among the results, it stands out that labor reintegration is a process that involves several phases, one of them is the period of service where the subject is prepared in the practice of punctuality, responsibility, commitment, and respect, as well as in emotional management for the performance of paid work. The decision of when, where and what activity to carry out falls, in principle, on the sponsor and the employer, since it depends on the subject's progress in their rehabilitation, the management of their emotions and the establishment of non-conflictive interpersonal relationships. To assign work activities, support networks made up of members of the self-help group are used, since the subjects must be monitored to avoid emotional and consumption relapses. LITERATURE reviews , *TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *ROBOTIC exoskeletons , *MEDICAL personnel , *VIRTUAL reality - Abstract
This article examines the integration of exoskeletons in the rehabilitation of patients with motor disabilities, highlighting their potential to improve mobility, muscle strength and quality of life. Through a qualitative literature review methodology, recent studies, success stories and comparisons between different populations were analyzed to evaluate the efficacy of exoskeletons. The results indicate significant improvements in patient mobility and independence, although challenges in implementation were identified, such as the need for specialized training for healthcare professionals, customization of the device to the patient, and economic barriers. The discussion highlights the importance of integrating exoskeletons with conventional therapies and emerging technologies, such as virtual reality, to overcome these challenges and improve rehabilitation outcomes. The conclusions emphasize the efficacy of exoskeletons in motor disability rehabilitation and recommend the development of training programs, more adaptable exoskeletons, and innovative funding models to expand their accessibility. This study highlights the need for future research to optimize the use of exoskeletons in clinical practice and improve the quality of life of patients with motor disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction and objective: in 2005, Pérez-Parra and González-Marín published a tool in Spanish for the evaluation of basic patterns of mobility (BPM) for adults with upper motor neuron injury, called PBM-UAM-2002. Through observation and application in professional practice, this tool has shown potential for the diagnosis of the physical capacity of the elderly with various health conditions. The objective of this study is to determine the internal consistency, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability of the PBM-UAM-2002, adapted for the evaluation of BPM in the elderly. Material and method: under the empirical-analytical approach, a psychometric study was carried out.Atotal of 33 men and 32 women between 65 and 108 years (77 ± 8,7) were evaluated. Analyzes of stability of the measurements, equivalence between evaluators and homogeneity between the BPM in all positions and the global instrument, were carried out. Results: high internal consistency was found between the BPMs in all positions and in the global tool (Cronbach's alpha > 0.87). The test-retest reliability for each BPM ranged from good to very good (Kappa > 0.65), with ICC greater than 0.88 (p < .001); the correlations between measurements ranged between 0.79 and 0.95 (p<.001). The inter-rater reliability for each BPM ranged from moderate to good (Kappa > 0.40), with ICC greater than 0.80 (p < .001); the correlations between measurements ranged from 0.63 to 0.85 (p < .001). Conclusions: the tool showed adequate reliability properties, which enables its application as part of the functional diagnosis of older adults, particularly from motor skills and the physical capacity component. PEOPLE with schizophrenia , *COLLECTIVE representation , *SOCIAL integration , *QUALITY of life , *MEDICAL personnel - Abstract
Fatalistic social representations about the recovery of people with schizophrenia, including health professionals, are associated with isolation, relapse, low self-esteem and fewer job opportunities. The study sought to identify social representations of six recently graduated psychologists about people with schizophrenia, using semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis was implemented with the support of NVivo software. A social representation of people with schizophrenia as subjects with particular psychological dynamics that involve episodic crises and who require therapeutic accompaniment to achieve a full life is identified. In addition to dealing with their diagnosis, they face the stigma of schizophrenia as a sentence, homogenization and ignorance of their subjectivity. Psychoeducation, which views them as active participants in their recovery process and seeks to strengthen their potential, is proposed as a therapeutic alternative to improve their quality of life and social inclusion. Objective: To map available scientific evidence on rehabilitation in the daily lives of people with postcovid-19 neurological sequelae. Methodology: This is a scoping review according to the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The included studies were based on the mnemonic strategy participants/problem (adult people with neurological sequelae), concept (rehabilitation in everyday life) and context (covid-19 pandemic), with timeframe from 2020 to 2022, available in the seven selected databases, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, collected and analyzed according to PRISMA-ScR. Results: A total of 1,027 studies were recovered, and the sample consisted of 11 articles that presented rehabilitation programs for sequelae: fatigue, anosmia, cognitive and neuropsychological disorders. Among the main rehabilitation programs found, the following stand out: progression walking, breathing exercises; olfactory training using essential oils and cognitive approaches. From the findings, the rehabilitation process has been shown to be effective for the management of post-covid-19 neurological sequelae, and should be started early. Conclusions: Rehabilitation programs should involve a multidisciplinary team, since the disease presents persistent multisystemic symptoms, involving a holistic approach, which encompasses behavioral aspects related to self-care, physical rehabilitation, emotional support and health education, promoting recovery and improving the quality of life of individuals affected by the disease. COMPOSITE materials , *MATERIAL fatigue , *CORROSION resistance , *PIPELINE maintenance & repair , *SIMULATION methods & models - Abstract
Due to their high resistance to corrosion, fatigue and low specific weight, composite materials have been developed as an excellent alternative to replace traditional materials. They are used in fluid transportation, rehabilitation, and repair of in-service pressure systems and are relatively easy to use in the industrial sector. This work presents the state-ofthe-art in repair systems using composite material reinforcement. First, it classifies the systems, showing those available in the market, and compares them regarding their mechanical properties and application processes. The second section presents and compares the design standards ASME PCC2 and ISO 24817. Finally, it discusses the experimental and simulation techniques used for their study. The work concludes by showing the future possibilities and challenges that composite repair systems face in their adoption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RANDOMIZED controlled trials , *STROKE , *VIRTUAL reality , *QUALITY of life , *REHABILITATION , *CLINICAL trials , *STROKE rehabilitation - Abstract
Conventional physiotherapeutic treatment has been shown to be effective in addressing the sequelae after stroke however virtual reality immersion as a physiotherapeutic treatment is a promising tool for rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of physiotherapeutic treatment with virtual reality for stroke. The methodology involved searching for randomized controlled trials, clinical trials in PubMed and SciELO databases, following PRISMA guidelines where 17 relevant studies were selected. These showed significant improvements using braces, software, robotic assistance, and home game consoles. Improvements were evident in motor, cognitive and ambulation recovery. The results are promising and support the usefulness of virtual reality as a physiotherapeutic treatment for the timely and effective management of post-stroke sequelae as well as improving quality of life. In conclusion, the virtual reality tools that stand out are the supports that allow the execution of tasks in an agile manner, as well as the combination of these with conventional therapies that enhance the results. CINAHL database , *LIPEDEMA , *PHYSICAL therapy , *THERAPEUTICS , *INTERDISCIPLINARY research , *META-analysis , *SYMPTOMS , *PATHOLOGY , *ADIPOSE tissue diseases - Abstract
Background: lipoedema is a disease in which there is a pathological and excessive fat deposition in the subcutaneous cellular tissue. This pathology is chronic and progressive occurring bilaterally and symmetrically. The proposed treatment is oriented to the signs and symptoms presented by each patient and should be approached in a multidisciplinary manner. Objective: to analyse the existing literature on the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of lipoedema.Material and method: A search was carried out in January 2022 on existing publications in PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, PEDro, WOS and Scopus. Inclusion criteria were established for articles to be in English, and exclusion criteria were those that did not fit the objective, repeated articles and systematic reviews and metaanalyses. Results: we evaluated the methodological quality of the 8 articles and analysed the composition and characteristics of the intervention in each of them. The most repeated therapies are complex decongestive therapy and the intermittent pneumatic compression technique. In all the studies where they have been used, positive results have been found. Conclusions: even with the little existing scientific evidence on the exact treatment of the disease, in most of the physiotherapy treatments applied, significant improvements were achieved in terms of volume, pain, functionality and other variables analysed. Therefore, further research is necessary to increase the level of evidence in this field and to be able to determine a really specific and effective treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Patients who are in the intensive care unit have an accentuated hypercatabolic state in addition to a prolonged resting state, so it is important that the medical effort is aimed at improving all aspects that are affected by the root of the hospital stay. Multidisciplinary therapy is one of the goals that should be achieved in all units so that doctors and physiotherapists are involved early in the rehabilitation of severe patients. The early implementation of the use of the stabilized table in the ICU tries to improve the changes in the different systems of the organism, being adjuvant in conventional medical therapy, with results demonstrated in the improvement of patients in various published studies. Objective: To determine the conditioning factors for labor participation in persons with disability due to spine lesions attended at a specialized rehabilitation center. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out at the Departamento de Investigación, Docencia, y Atención en Ayuda al Tratamiento del Servicio de Rehabilitación Professional from 2016 to 2019, 224 patients were evaluated. Clinical, sociodemographic and contextual variables were collected as well as economic activity before and after the trauma. Results: 65% of patients were males; mean age was 38.61 ± 13.33; 85.3% had paraplegia and 63.5% had a lesion grade A on the ASIA scale; duration of illness was higher than one year in 30.4%; 52.2% were single; 51.3% come from provinces of Peru; 50.9% had secondary school level and 61% lived in extreme poverty. A significative difference for labor participation was found between sex (p<0.01) and labor condition (p<0.014) before the spinal lesion. Labor participation after the spinal lesion correlated with socioeconomic level (p<0.005) and the degree of the lesion based on the ASIA scale (p<0.014). The logistic regression analysis found that only duration of illness correlated with labor participation (p=0.039; OR=19.9). Conclusions: Patients with spinal lesions who lived in extreme poverty had higher labor participation as well as those with higher scores in the ASIA scale. The only predicting factor for labor participation was duration of illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
