Water bottom rack intakes or tyrolean weirs are hydraulic structures widely used in our country given its good performance in mountain streams. In this structures the occurrence of spatially(gradually) varied flow over the intake does not allow an analytic solution to the variation of the water surface over the intake which has lead to its general sizing criteria uses empirical and constructive reasons. To make a more accurate design accounting with the flow variability over the structure, that facilitates the rack dimensioning of the intakes properly exploiting the water resource, Mostkow's method is presented to calculate the water surface profile along with the graphs which in a simple manner allow to determine the minimum length of rack intakes in terms of the de discharge, the slope and the clogging percentage of the racks.
