Introduction: Changes in sleep patterns increase susceptibility to weight gain. Objective: To estimate the association between the quality and quantity of sleep hours per night and Body Mass Index (BMI) in Mexican college adolescents. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study conducted among incoming nursing students in a public university in Mexico. Convenience sampling was used, involving n=134 students (18-19 years old), volunteers, and enrolled in the nursing program. Sleep quality and quantity were measured through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). BMI was calculated using the standard formula. The protocol was approved by the School of Nursing Ethics Committee, and the participants signed informed consent. Results: Mean age 18.21 years (SD= .42 years), 82.84% female, 45.52% overweight or obese (95% CI= 35.46 -52.86%). 44.02% of participants reported sleeping = 6 hours per night, and 50.00% reported poor sleep quality in the past four weeks. After adjustment for age, sex, and occupation, sleep quality was not associated with BMI (OR= 1.01; 95% CI= .94 -1.08; z= .31; p= .75); increased BMI was associated with a greater likelihood of sleeping 6 hours or less (OR= 1.08; 95% CI= 1.01 - 1.16; z= 2.25; p= .02). Discussion: Hormonal changes, behavioral factors, and the environment may explain the association. Conclusions: It is advisable to implement educational strategies to improve sleep hygiene among this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insomnia is a sleep disorder associated frequently with physical and emotional health problems. Evidence suggests that it is a recurrent problem in adults in the general population, identifying fewer hours of sleep and poor sleep quality. Objective. To analyze the association of insomnia symptoms and identify core symptoms in Peruvian adults from the general population. Method. The sample consisted of 351 adults (53% men) who responded to the Athens Insomnia Scale. A regularized partial correlation network model was estimated. Results. Sleep duration, overall quality, and sleep malaise for problems were the most central symptoms in the network. The strongest conditional associations emerged between duration and sleep quality, malaise for problems sleep and interference with daily functioning. The network structure was accurate and stable (CS = .749). Conclusions. Sleep duration, overall quality, and sleep malaise for problems are relevant symptoms for understanding insomnia in adults of general population. Addressing those symptoms from cognitive behavioral therapy could improve anticipated awakenings, sleep initiation difficulties and sleepiness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BEHAVIOR therapy , *INSOMNIA , *SLEEP duration , *SLEEP quality , *COGNITIVE therapy , *PATHOLOGICAL psychology , *ANXIETY , *EMOTION regulation - Abstract
Introduction. Insomnia Disorder (ID) is defined as the predominant dissatisfaction with the quantity or quality of sleep associated with difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep or early-morning awakenings with the inability to go back to sleep. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven its effectiveness for ID, being established as a frontline treatment. Objective. To identify the variables associated with the success of CBT for insomnia. Method. The sample consisted of 28 patients who attended the HCUV Sleep Unit and met ID diagnostic criteria. All patients underwent a CBT program in group format. Several sociodemographic and clinical characteristics (general psychopathology, anxiety, depression, anger, emotional regulation, and personality) were evaluated in order to determine which discriminated between patients who improve and those who do not improve after CBT, using the Index Insomnia Severity (ISI) as a criterion variable. Results: After the program, almost 60% of the sample improved. Significant differences were found in the level of severity of insomnia after CBT according to sex (p = 0.027), with women improving more. Likewise, lower levels of psychopathology were related to a better response to the intervention (p = 0.007). Moreover, two personality dimensions were significant: low Harm avoidance (p = 0.006) and high Self-directedness (p = 0.026), appearing associated with improvement. Conclusions. The CBT-I group program was globally effective in improving insomnia, detecting that certain clinical and personality profiles benefit the most. More research is needed to determine if they could be patients with different subtypes of insomnia. The temperament dimensions seem to play a relevant role in determining subtypes of insomnia and perhaps we could offer more personalized treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SLEEP latency , *SLEEP duration , *THIN films , *LIQUID films , *CHEMICAL structure , *INFRARED spectroscopy , *DEGLUTITION - Abstract
Ultrathin oral films are novel delivery systems that do not require water to swallow, show rapid systemic release, and allow a comfortable and precise dosage. These films represent an option for administering active metabolites from medicinal plants used against insomnia, such as Agastache mexicana. However, incorporating complex bioactive molecules can compromise the functionality of the films. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties and biological activity of sodium alginate films added with the ethanolic extracts of Agastache Mexicana. After incorporating the extracts, the films preserved their homogeneous morphology, thickness (<50 µm), and solubility time (<10 min). In contrast, hardness increased more than 40%, and elasticity increased 60%. Infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed that, after the preparation of the films, the functional groups of the extracts and the chemical structure of the ultrathin films were maintained. Moreover, we demonstrated that the hypnotic effect of Agastache mexicana was preserved, since the sleep onset latency and total sleep time in a murine model were similar between the liquid extract and the film formulation. These data support the use of ultrathin films with natural extracts as a potential treatment for sleep disorders like insomnia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEALTH attitudes , *MOTHERS , *OBESITY , *QUESTIONNAIRES , *SURVEYS , *SOCIOECONOMIC factors , *BODY mass index - Abstract
Introduction: despite the fact that childhood obesity is a serious health problem, little is known about its related factors in early childhood. Objective: to evaluate which maternal, cognitive and infant factors influence the infant's energy intake and if these influence their nutritional status before the year. Methods: descriptive study of correlation. Two hundred and sixty-seven dyads (mother/child) participated. The questionnaires consisted of four instruments for the cognitive variables of the mother (maternal self-efficacy, attitude in the diet, perception of signs of hunger, satiety and weight of the child), energy intake through a 24-hour reminder and sociodemographic and anthropometric data of the mother and child, through which maternal body mass index (BMI) and Z-score of infant weight/height have been calculated. Results: the model was significant for the intake of kcal/kg weight (F = 8.624, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.104), negatively correlating with the maternal perception of the weight of the child (B = -9.73, p = 0.002), hours of sleep (B = -2.19, p = 0.044) and age of the child (B = -2.26, p = 0.001). Also for the Z-score (weight/length) (F = 68.979, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.564) and explained positively with perception of the weight of the child (B = 1.133, p < 0.001) and age of the child (B = 0.054, p = 0.006) and negatively with hours of sleep of the mother (B = -0.07, p = 0.040) and caloric intake (B = -0.004, p = 0.027).Conclusion: mothers of nursing infants who underestimate their child's weight and sleep fewer hours provide more caloric intake and their children have a higher Z-score weight/length. There are differences in terms of the need to sleep in the general population. Some studies suggest that short sleepers are likely to produce hallucinations, and that seems to have a possible relationship between sleep duration, hallucinations and other anomalous experiences during daytime. This study focuses on understanding the aetiology of certain unusual perceptual experiences (PPE), by exploring the relationship between sleep duration, schizotypy, and sleep quality. We classified a sample of the general population in sleep duration into three groups: short period (n = 202, 46%), medium (n = 103, 23%) and long (n = 131, 30%) by means of a Pittsburgh Scale ítem. They also completed the Inventory of Feelings and Experiences Oxford-Liverpool (O-LIFE) and the Unusual Perceptual Experiences Questionnaire. The results suggest that individuals with a short sleep period experience less memory and sharpness of images of dreams, albeit they have an increase in daytime unusual perceptual experiences. Sleep quality is directly related to some unusual experiences and schizotypy, which appears to be partially modulated by sleep duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
