A prerequisite for the management and treatment of oral mucosal diseases is clearly reaching the correct diagnosis. However, oral mucosal diseases are not sufficiently common to establish a routine in general dental practice, which is why they may be difficult to diagnose. The purpose of the present article is to present diagnostic tools for clinicians to discriminate between various lesions with similar clinical features, such as ulcerative/vesicular/bullous lesions, changes in colour, including white, erythematous, and pigmented lesions, and lesions with tissue overgrowth. The frame of this article does not allow the presentation of all oral mucosal diseases and is therefore limited to some of those presented in Tandläkartidningen number 2/2024 in the article ”Conditions and diseases affecting the salivary glands and their function” and in the previous article in this number of Tandläkartidningen, ”Common oral mucosal lesions”, which are of most relevance in daily practice.
