Ett tjugotal lantbrukare i Mönsterås kommun planerar för att bygga en stor biogas­anläggning som kommer att ha fastgödsel från höns som huvudsubstrat. Den gemen­samma biogasanläggning kan bli den största i sitt slag i Sverige, med en biogas­produktion på ca 70 GWh biogas/år för produktion av drivmedel. Den genererade rötresten kan kväve­försörja ca 12 000 ha/år växtodling och fosforförsörja ca 20 000 ha/år. Den rötade gödseln bidrar i princip till all växtnäring i rötresten, där fjäderfä­gödseln kommer att bidra med ca 80 % av rötrestens innehåll av kväve och fosfor. Ett hinder för att realisera denna anläggning är att det idag saknas erfarenhet från praktisk drift av rötningsanläggningar med betydande inblandning av fjäderfägödsel. Fjäderfä­gödsel är både ett fosfor- och kväverikt substrat, och innehåller dessutom både tunga och lätta partiklar som riskerar att bilda sediment och svämtäcken i rötkammaren. Idag betraktas fjäderfägödsel framför allt som ett fosforgödselmedel eftersom huvuddelen av kvävet inte är direkt upptagbart av växter, men rötning av fjäderfägödsel ökar andelen direktverkanande kväve. För att optimera hantering, spridning och utnyttjande av kväve och fosfor i fjäderfägödsel är det önskvärt att processa denna gödsel för att generera fyra stycken gödselmedel med olika kväve- och fosforkvot. För att kunna studera dessa fråge­ställningar och bredda gödselbasen för rötning har Vinnova, under 2016-2018, finansierat denna tillämpade studie. Under ett tillämpat försök genomfördes rötning i pilotskala av kväverik hönsgödsel som huvudsubstrat. Rötningsprocessen gick att driva stabilt vid en ammoniumkvävehalt på närmare 6 g/l inom det mesofila temperaturområdet i en totalomblandad rötkammare med volymetrisk metanproduktion som uppgick till 1,1 m3 CH4/m3 slamvolym & dag. Järnklorid tillfördes rötkammaren för att hålla biogasens innehåll av svavelväte vid ca 100 ppm. För att hålla ammoniumhalten vid angiven nivå tillfördes vatten motsvarande halva inflödet in i rötkammaren, för att späda ner kvävet till denna nivå. Efter rötningen av substratblandningen ökade dess ammoniuminnehåll med 3,7 gånger. Under pilotförsöket producerades ca 13 m3 rötrest som sparades och lagrades 4–8 månader innan den förädlades i två steg till två olika gödselmedel. I första steget genomfördes fasseparation med en dekantercentrifug följt av indunstning av surgjord tunnfas. Baserat på dessa försök beräknas fassepareringen kunna generera ett fast gödselmedel vars vikt motsvarar 23 % av i rötningsprocessen producerad rötrest. Det fasta gödselmedlets innehåll av fosfor utgör dryga 70 % av rötrestens fosforinnehåll. Vidare beräknas indunstningen kunna generera ett uppkoncentrerat flytande gödsel­medel vars vikt motsvarar 2o % av i rötningsprocessen producerad rötrest. Det flytande gödselmedlets innehåll av ammoniumkvävet utgör dryga 70 % av rötrestens ammonium­innehåll. Det producerade koncentratgödselmedlet liksom tunnfasgödselmedlet hade en hög andel lättillgängligt kväve, vilket är en viktig delförutsättning för att uppnå höga skördar vid växtodling. Gödselmedel från Mönsterås Biogas planerade biogasanläggning kan i framtiden bidra till att jordbruket i Kalmar län med omnejd kan gå mot en hållbar intensifiering av livsmedelsproduktionen. Digestion of poultry manure with digestate processing in pilot scale tests Twenty farmers in the municipality of Mönsterås in southern Sweden are jointly planning to build a large biogas plant. The plant will digest a very high proportion of poultry manure, resulting in significantly greater biogas yield than normally expected, and higher nitrogen contents in the digestate. A major obstacle to realising the biogas plant is controlling digestion operation under high nitrogen levels resulting from the considerable amounts of poultry manure substrate. Poultry manure also contains both heavy and light particles that can cause challenges with poor stability in the digestion process, formation of sediments and crust in digester tanks. The high nitrogen contents together with high phosphorus and solids concentrations will also create difficulties for digestate management and use as fertiliser. Today solid poultry manure is mainly used as a phosphorus fertiliser, not only due to high concentration of phosphorus but also due to relatively poor utilisation of the nitrogen by crops. However, due to the high concentration of phosphorus, the application rate needed to meet plant needs is lower than modern solid manure spreaders can evenly apply. Over application and inefficient use of nitrogen increases risk of nutrient losses to waters and the environment. To study these issues for biogas production, Vinnova (Sweden's innovation agency) has supported this research project in applied digestion and digestate processing. The project contained the following components: i) 6 months digestion tests with prospective substrates in a pilot-plant with 5 m3 active digesting volume, provided with mixers and pumps commonly used in full-scale plants, ii) laboratory tests to determine biogas potential for feedstocks, and to determine the potential for increased gas production by post-digestion, iii) applied trials of separating and concentrating the digestate with centrifuge followed by industrial evaporation of the liquid phase, iv) analysis of the nutrient value and the function of the concentrated fertilizer in organic farming. The biological and technical operational performance in the pilot test was evaluated in a complete stirred tank reactor at mesophilic temperature during co-digestion of poultry manure, liquid manure and glycerol. The poultry manure contributed with approx. 70% of dry matter in the substrate mixture and 80% of the nitrogen and phosphorus. The digestion process was stable with NH4-N levels close to 6 g/l. To control hydrogen sulphide in the biogas to approx. 100 ppm, ferric chloride was added to the digester. Volumetric methane production reached 1,1 m3 CH4/ m3 digester and day. Significant formation of sediment occurred in both digester and in pipes, however, no crust formation was observed in the digester. The outflow of ammonia from the digester by the digestate was 3.7 times higher than the ammonia inflow by the substrate mixture. Thirteen tonnes of digestate was produced during the pilot test. The digestate was separated with a decanter centrifuge generating a solid fraction corresponding to 23% of digestate weight and approx. 70% of the phosphorus in the digestate. Sulfuric acid was added to the liquid fraction generated by the centrifuge before evaporation to stabilize the ammonium nitrogen. Industrial evaporation of the liquid fraction produced a concentrate corresponding to 23% of digestate weight and containing approx. 70% of the ammonium nitrogen in the digestate. The pilot test generated four different fertilisers, (digestate, solid fraction, liquid fraction and concentrate) each with very different physical and chemical properties. Digestate processing increased the N/P ration of the liquid fraction and concentrate allowing more balanced N and P supply to crop demand, reducing the risk of nutrient losses to waters but also increasing the resource use efficiency of the plant nutrients. Processing was also successful at concentrating the two of the fertilisers, enabling cost effective long-distance transport for use in areas with low animal density and a need for the soil amendment properties of from manure. These project results have contributed to plans for a full-scale plant by developing the basis of design and the credibility for implementation, resulting in an investment grant and the formation of a new economically stronger company. Based on the results from the project, the estimated production of biogas in a full-scale plant is 70 GWh /year for renewable automotive fuels. Post-digestion of the digestate with 10 days retention time can increase biogas production with an extra 3 GWh/year (4%). The solid and liquid products can fertilise 12 000 ha/year of organic cultivation with nitrogen and up to 20 000 up to ha/year with phosphorus.

Because of the increasing trends in energy consumption and increased environmental awareness, greater focus has been placed on improvement and development of renewable energy sources. An already proven and accepted method is biogas production from anaerobic digestion at municipal wastewater treatment plants. In the waste water treatment process solid material and dissolved pollutants are separated from the water, forming a sludge. The sludge is separated from the process and stabilized during anaerobic digestion or aerobic aeration. Most often, mesophilic anaerobic digestion is used. Because of degradation by microorganisms, biogas with a high content of methane is formed during the digestion. To optimize the process different studies with co-digestion with sludge and other substrate have been made. It has been showed, in earlier research studies, that co-digestion with microalgae and sewage sludge results in a synergistic effect with increased biogas production. As the microalgae are microorganisms which use photosynthesis they contain stored energy from sun light. The stored energy will be available when the microalgae are digested in mesophilic conditions. In contrast to other biomass suitable for co-digestion microalgae have the advantage of being able to grow in waste water and reduce the pollutants in the water phase. Cultivation of microalgae will therefore not compete with the cultivation of food production and at the same time has the possibility to decrease the electricity- and heat consumption at the wastewater treatment plants. The aim of this study was to investigate how a possible synergetic effect between microalgae and sewage sludge effects the biogas production and the process stability. The microalgae was cultivated in municipal waste water from the WWTP in Umeå (Sweden) and the sludge was collected from the WWTP in Västerås (Sweden). The fermenters used was of the type DOLLY© and the active volume was 5 dm3. The temperature in the fermenters was kept at 37 °C and the study was divided into two periods. During the first period the hydraulic retention time was 15 days and the organic loading rate 2.4 g VS dm-3 d-1. During the second period the hydraulicretention time was kept at 10 days and the organic loading rate was 3.5 g VS dm-3 d-1. The result showed an increase with 54.6 % in methane production per reduced VS in the fermenter with co-digestion compared to the fermenter where only sludge was digested. Period one showed the highest increase. The result also showed a good process stability for both fermenters during the whole experiment. This study shows that there are reasons for continued investigations about co-digestion with microalgae and sewage sludge for an increased biogas production. På grund av ökande el- och värmeförbrukning och ökat miljöengagemang har större fokus lagts på förbättring och utveckling av förnyelsebara källor för el- och värmeproduktion. En redan beprövad och accepterad metod för framställning av förnyelsebar energi är från biogasproduktion vid kommunala reningsverk. Vid rening av avloppsvatten avskiljs fasta partiklar och lösta föroreningar och bildar ett slam som separeras från vattnet. Slammet kan sedan stabiliseras anaerobt genom rötning eller aerobt genom luftning. En ofta använd metod vid konventionella reningsverk är mesofil anaerob rötning. Vid rötningen bryts material ner av mikroorganismer och genererar biogas som framförallt innehåller metan och koldioxid. För att optimera en sådan process och därmed kunna utvinna mer gas har det tidigare undersökts hur samrötning med olika material påverkar biogasproduktionen. Det har visat sig i forskningsförsök att samrötning med mikroalger och orötat blandslam ger en synergieffekt och mer biogas produceras. Mikroalgerna innehåller lagrad energi från solljus, då de är fotosyntesiserande organismer. Den lagrade energin har visat sig bli tillgänglig vid mesofil anaerob nedbrytning. Till skillnad från annan biomassa som undersökts för samrötning kan mikroalgerna odlas på avloppsreningsverken och fungera som en del av reningsprocessen då mikroalgerna tar upp näringsämnen ur vattnet de växer i. På det sättet undviks konkurrens om odlingsmark för livsmedel och så blir reningsprocessen på avloppsreningsverken mer el- och värmeeffektiv. Syftet med studien var att undersöka om eventuell synergieffekt mellan mikroalgerna och slammet påverkar biogasproduktionen och processtabiliteten vid mesofil anaerob rötning. Mikroalgerna som användes var odlade på mekaniskt renat spillvatten från Umeås reningsverk och slammet som användes hämtades ifrån Västerås reningsverk. Rötkamrarna som användes var av modellen DOLLY© med en aktiv volym på 5 dm3. Temperaturen i rötkamrarna hölls kring 37°C och studien var uppdelad i två perioder. Under period ett var den hydrauliska uppehållstiden 15 dygn och den organiska belastningen 2,4 g VS dm-3 d-1, medan period två hade en hydraulisk uppehållstid på 10 dygn och en organisk belastning på 3,5 g VS dm-3 d-1. Resultaten visade att metangasproduktionen per tillförd mängd organiskt material var lägre vid samrötning jämfört med rötning av enbart slam. Metangasproduktionen per reducerad mängd organiskt material ökade med upp till 54,6 % vid samrötningen jämfört med rötning av enbart slam. Period ett gav upphov till den största ökningen. Processen hölls stabil även vid inblandning av mikroalger, under både period ett och två. Studien visar att det finns ett underlag för fortsatta studier kring samrötning av mikroalger och slam för en ökad biogasproduktion.

Today's society is facing major challenges. In order to reduce the climate impact fossil fuels should be replaced with fuels that do not contribute to the greenhouse effect. The growing population generates organic waste originating from industry and households so called organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). Through anaerobic digestion, waste can be utilized to produce energy-rich methane gas. In this way, waste can be a resource instead of a burden on society. The purpose of this project is to investigate the methane yield of source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) pretreated with screw crush technology and methane yield at the co-digestion of food waste and biosludge from paper mills. SS-OFMSW which is either pre-treated in a screw crusher or a Food Waste Mill and a mixture of SS-OFMSW and biosludge from paper mills digested in a semi - continuous wet process under mesophilic conditions with a retention time of 20 days. Screw crush technique gave a slurry with a methane yield of about 440-490 mL / g VS, which was slightly higher than the yield of 300-350 mL / g VS from the slurry pretreated with Food Waste Mill. The methane concentration was slightly higher for slurry pretreated with Food Waste Mill, 74% in average compared with 68% for slurry pretreated with screw crush. Biosludge from paper mills is an organic waste that can be digested in order to produce biogas. The sludge is poor in nutrients and methane yield at individual anaerobic digestion of paper mill sludge is relatively low. In this study, biosludge was co-digested with SS-OFMSW. The mixture with the proportions 1:1 by g VS gave a methane yield of about 420-480 mL / g VS which is higher than the constituent substrates digested separately. Co-digestion gave a methane concentration at 80% which is also higher than at the individual anaerobic digestion of substrates.

BIOGAS POTENTIAL IN GRASSES FROM WETLANDS Marvin Martins The purpose of this study has been to survey wetlands that are suitable for mowing and to analyze the biogas potential in the harvested grasses. A preformed investigation showed that there are suitable wetlands, which can be harvestable, namely those mowed formerly in traditional haymaking. The practice of traditional haymaking is dying out in Sweden today but there are several good reasons why it should to be reconsidered. Nature- and cultural values are obvious, also the unutilized energy in the grass. The suitable types of wetland that were specifically studied were the productive wetlands; meadow marshes and wet meadows. These wetlands are represented in the Swedish meadow- and pasture inventory database; (TUVA) and the Swedish national wetland inventory (VMI). Going through the databases showed that they largely complement each other. A geographical mapping was also carried out of wetlands in relation to areas of interest for the future establishment of biogas plants, so called “hotspots”. The geographical survey shows that there is ample amount of grass from wetlands within a 30-kilometer radius that can supplement the plants main substrate, manure. The map layer Swedish Ground Cover Data (SMD) together with GIS software was used to analyze the extent of overgrowth for the older VMI objects in Uppsala County, with the result that half of the VMI objects are no longer of interest. They have become either woodland and bogs, or reed beds. There is very little information on wetland-grasses and methane production. Instead, a theory was evaluated regarding the possibility of transforming nutritional values for grass and sedges into biogas potentials. It was shown that this method does not capture the total biogas potential, but offers a minimum value that can be considered rather reliable. The energy transformation showed that late harvested grasses from wetlands has a biogas potential about 0, 21Nm3 methane/ (kg, DM) which is about 60 % of the biogas potential for grass-legume forages. The gas yield after 20 days is also relatively low. It could though be favorable to try grasses from wetlands in methane production, because co-digestion with these grasses and other suitable materials could produce a higher net gas yield for the plant, than using the materials solely by themselves. The derived biogas potential showed that there is at least 4, 4 GWh biogas energy in grasses from wetlands in Uppsala county at a low estimate. Harvesting costs were however shown to be too high in the present to achieve a plus result. Traditionell slåtter är en utdöende företeelse i Sverige men det finns flera goda argument till varför den borde återupptas. Natur- och kulturvärden är givna sådana men även den outnyttjade energin i gräset. Våtmarkstyper som specifikt har studerats är de produktiva våta slåtterängarna; fuktängar, strandängar och mader. Dessa våtmarker finns representerade i Ängs- och betesmarksinventeringens databas; TUVA och våtmarksinventeringens VMI. En genomgång av databaserna visade att de i stor utsträckning kompletterar varandra. En geografisk kartläggning har även utförts på slåttermarker i förhållande till intressanta områden för framtida biogasanläggningar, så kallade ”hotspots”.
