Brucellosis is an endemic and economically important zoonotic infection in Turkey. Genetic characterization of the agents responsible for brucellosis in cattle has not been documented. The purpose of this study is to isolate and genotype Brucella spp. From aborted cattle fetuses. Brucella spp. Was isolated and identified from 37 out of 62 (59.7%) aborted cattled fetuses. Twenty seven isolates were analyzed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) and the amplified DNA polymorphisms were compared with those of vaccine and prototypes strains of B. abortus (S19) and B. melitensis (Rev 1). The RAPD profiles of 12 (44.4%) and 15(55.6%) isolates were found to be identical to those of B. abortus S19 and B. melitensis Rev 1, respectively. These results suggest ha both Brucella spp., B. abortus and B. abortus and B. melitensis, should be considered for implementing diagnosis, control, eradication and outbreak management of bovine brucellosis in this region.
