Ottoman Greek publishers, journalists and cartoonists assumed a founding role in the satirical magazines that from 1870 onwards were published in İstanbul and Smyrna. This article gives basic knowledge about the satirical newspapers and magazines that were published in İstanbul and İzmir starting from their first appearance in Ottoman lands until 1922. These published materials played a vital function not only in their particular field but also in general political journalism and had a determining function in the development of press, in the enrichment of its content and reaching a wider readership. But the satirical press just like the rest of the periodical press remained in between the political ebbs and flows of the period and most of the satirical periodical press were short lived due to banning and censorship.
