Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder characterized by depigmentation. Therapy is aimed to stop disease progression, stimulate repigmentation and in universal vitiligo, to attain depigmentation in normal skin. Advances in targeted phototherapy and lasers enabled to deliver high doses ultraviole (UV) to lesional skin in a short time. Excimer laser and lambs generate 308 nm radiation with similar mechanisms as narrow band UVB. Excimer lasers, by quick response rates without severe advers events maybe considered as first line of treatment alone on face and neck. Repigmentation rates are high when combined with conventional therapies. Fractional and ablative lasers and helium-neon lasers are used consecutively or in combination with conventional therapies to enhance their effectiveness. Q-Switched lasers, are preferred for depigmentation in universal vitiligo. Their efficacy is high in the presence of koebner phenomenon. Intense light is delivered by phototherapy devices that emit targeted light in the spectrum of UVB and/or UVA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
