Noise cancellation is an important task which is performed for physiological and psychological health protection of personnel working in especially highly and continuously noisy environment. Active noise cancellation, one of the most common noise cancellation methods, is based on the interference of the noise signal with anti noise signal which has same amplitude as noise signal, but 180 degree shifted in phase. On this basis, a lot of techniques and algorithms have been developed in order to cancel noise actively. In this thesis, effects of active noise cancellation parameters and performance of the algorithms on different noise types are investigated. According to the results, the active noise cancellation parameters were observed to have great importance in terms of performance and stability. Moreover, algorithms were compared with each other, and the successful and unsuccessful cases were determined. In cases when algorithms are inefficient, deficiencies might be eliminated by using different algorithms that has different structure or by using hybrid algorithms. 91

In this paper, an active noise cancellation system to decrease the motor noise arriving to car driver is proposed. This system can be considered as a feedforward control system since it enables taking motor noise as the reference signal. The coefficients of adaptive filters in this structure are obtained with LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithm. In this study, both standard (LMS and normalized LMS) and more advanced (variable tap length LMS and variable step size LMS) LMS algorithms are used and their performances are compared. For the different models belonging to different configurations of the system, the acoustic noise simulations, which contains real noise signal belonging to motor of an accelerated car, are realized. According to the results of these simulations, the advanced LMS algorithms are observed to converge more rapidly and have better error performances within whole signal and steady-state as compared to classical algorithms.

ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL BY PEAK PICKING ALGORITHM SUMMARY A new approach has been studied to reduce car tire and road noise level by means of an active noise control method in this thesis. The fundamentals of the active control system were established in the 1930s. New technologies made it possible to replace primitive methods that employed analog devices and setups recently. The active control system can be applied to a wide variety of problems in telecommunications. This study intends to use this method for booming noise control which signifies a broad band noise up to about 1 kHz. The active noise control methods in automotive applications especially aim at eliminating periodic noise such as engine and powertrain noise. The reason of this inclination is the ease of using feedback and feedforward adaptive control for controlling harmonic noise. The tire road noise, on the other hand, has a complex characteristic that contains periodic and random noise at the same time. In this study, the adaptive prediction structure has been used for canceling components of the total noise with periodic nature. Since the periodic noise components have a predictable nature, the system can correlate the signals to produce the essential anti-noise signals. The absence of a reference sensor that senses the primary noise signal is the main difference between feedback and feedforward controls. The composite noise signal that signifies a final error in the system is sensed by a microphone in front of the control speaker. In this case, there is a need to handle the error signal at a minimum level. This minimization routine is provided by the filtered-XLMS algorithm. The test setup has been established in a laboratory environment by means of PVC tubes, microphones, speakers, and signal processing devices. The main reasons for using tubes are to obtain one-dimensional propagation of sound waves and to simplify the calculations. The control process has been performed by the Lab View software of National Instruments and the data acquisition card of the same brand. The insertion of a peak picking routine in a classic adaptive predictive feedback algorithm is the main contribution of this study. The classical algorithm is unable to reduce random noise due the broadband and complex characteristics of the tire/road noise. The periodic signals can be eliminated only if they are separated from random components. The peak-picking algorithm makes this selection possible. The periodic noise is computed while random components remain out of the control system. When the system starts functioning, the transfer function is found between the control speaker and the microphone. This' information is used to compute anti noise signals afterwards. The Fourier transformation is performed to transform the signals from time to frequency domain. The main components have been selected by means of the peak-picking algorithm in this frequency domain. The selected peak-based anti noise signals are then created by adaptive XLMS algorithm. The first experiments have been performed virtually on the computer. Once the confidence of the system in these virtual experiments was verified, a reduction of about 25 dB for only one sinus signal was achieved in real condition. The final step was to observe the results for real tire/road noise signals that have been recorded in a test car. It has been observed that the system has an insufficient capacity to elaborate complex signals such as tire/road noise. The inability of shift registers to handle the signals and the unconformity of the data-acquisition card to convert the acoustic signals are the main reasons for this lack of success. Nevertheless, it was noticed that the system works well in some specific conditions. The system can be improved using a processor with higher capacity and with algorithms that require less space within the processors. 129
