1. Estimation of Stream Temperature in Degirmendere River (Trabzon-Turkey) Using Artificial Neural Network Model

Abstract

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is a modeling technique with training which takes the working system of the brain as basis. Learning in ANNs is realized with the renewal of the connection gaps. ANNs make possible to solve the non-defined problems through the learning ability. In this study, we have estimated various environmental factors using an artificial model of the brain, known as Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Here, we has developed and tested an ANN model to predict stream temperature of Degirmendere in Black Sea, using local water temperature, air temperature, and stream temperature. In the structure of the ANN used in the model, the number of the hidden neuron was determined as 16, Sum-Squared Error was determined as 0.005 and the number of the iteration has been determined as 40000. As a result of the regression analysis realized between the model outputs and measurement results obtained in the study, the value of r = 0.92 was calculated. When the other literature studies which had done before have been examined, in the light of the model outputs and statistical evaluations, and regarding the complex and nonlinear structure of the study environment, it was seen that the ANN modeling technique can be utilized in the timely prediction of the temperatures of the stream waters.

2. The results of the lower limb lengthening by callus distraction method

Abstract

Although many methods are defined to reduce lower limb length differences, nowadays mostly these methods are used: Ilizarov distraction osteogenesis method, Wagner method, DeBastiani callus distraction method. In this study, limb lengthening by the callus distraction method of DeBastiani was performed on 23 femurs and tibias of 22 cases between November 1987-November 1996 in Ondokuz Mayis University Medicine Faculty Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department. The mean time of follow-up was 48.1 months (5 to 112). The mean age of the cases were 14.7 years (3 to 23). The surgical method employed has been described by DeBastiani and the Orthofix eksternal fixator was used on all cases. The mean limb length discrepancy was 5.8 cm (3.2 to 11.6) and the mean 3.9 cm (2.5 to 6.2) length was obtained. In the all cases, complication rate was 50%. As conclusion, it's determined that DeBastiani callus distraction method is a successful and safe method in reducing lower limb length differences because of these reasons: Enabling periosteal ossification, necessitating minimal exposure, shortening the staying period at hospital, being a stable system, accelerating corticalization by providing dynamization, better tolerable of patient and low complication rate.

3. [The investigation of intestinal parasites in foreign high school students].

Abstract

Intestinal parasites are important health problem especially in undeveloped or underdeveloped countries with low socio-economic status,. In this study, stool and cellophane tape samples were analyzed for intestinal parasites in 192 foreign students who were came from 28 different countries and attending a high school with the age of 15 to 21 (age mean: 17.92 ± 1.30) in Kayseri. At least one or more intestinal parasite species were found in 73 (38 %) of them. The distribution of parasites which were detected in stool samples as follow; Blastocystis hominis; 63 (32.8%); Giardia intestinalis, 13 (6.7 %); Endolimax nana, 8 (4.1%); Entamoeba coli, 7 (3.6%); Iodamoeba butschlii, 1 (0.52%). There was no any parasite in cellophane tape samples.

Abstract

Modern psychiatric diagnostic systems classify neurological symptoms that cannot be explained by a physical disease or another psychiatric disorder as conversion disorder (CD) or dissociative motor disorder. It is a well-known fact that the overall rate of misdiagnosis of conversion symptoms is high. The most common presenting symptoms of misdiagnosed patients are gait and movement disturbances. Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare progressive autoimmune neurological disorder. The identification of antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in association with SPS provided an important contribution to the understanding of the pathophysiology of this syndrome. Patients may present with severe muscle rigidity and sudden contractions. Simultaneous contraction of agonist and antagonist muscles produces gait disturbance. SPS can be exacerbated by emotional stressors, and sudden auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli. Herein we present 2 patients that were referred for psychiatric assessment, because their neurological symptoms initially could not be explained by a neurological disease, and subsequently diagnosed as SPS. The aim of this case report is to draw attention to the psychiatric presentations of SPS and to emphasize the importance of complete psychiatric and neurological examination, including brain imaging and electrophysiological studies, in the differential diagnosis of CD.

Abstract

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian parasite that may be the agent of persistent and prolonged diarrhea. In this study, the etiologic agent of diarrhea in 18, 26 and 34 year-old immunocompetent female patients complaining of diarrhea was investigated. Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts were observed in stool specimens taken from the patients and stained by the Kinyoun's acid-fast stain method. In this study, an attempt has been made to shown the importance of Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is a cause of prolonged diarrhea mainly in immunosuppressed patients and is generally presented in case reports in our country.

Abstract

In this study carried out from January 2005-June 2008, a total of 28,911 stool samples were examined using native-Lugol and flotation/sedimentation methods and 7,164 cellophane tape preparations were examined directly. Intestinal parasites were found in 6,975 (24.13%). Of the patients, 52.90% were female and 47.10%, male. Blastocystis hominis, 5,701 (19.72%); Entamoeba coli, 910 (3.15%); Giardia intestinalis, 568 (1.96%); Endolimax nana, 363 (1.26%); Entamoeba hartmann i, 357 (1.23%); Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, 253 (0.87%); Chilomastix mesnilii, 92 (0.32%); Enterobius vermicularis, 58 (0.20%); Iodamoeba butschlii; 40 (0.14%); Taenia sp., 35 (0.12%); Ascaris lumbricoides, 34 (0.12%); and Hymenolepis nana, 17 (0.06%) were found to be the most common parasites.

Abstract

Demodex sp. is an obligatory ectoparasite of pilosebaceous units in humans. This study was carried out in order to investigate the frequency of Demodex sp. among high school students. For this purpose 75 women and 96 men, making a total of 171 students, were studied. Cellophane-tape preparations taken from their face, especially at the base of the nose, underside of the jaw and the side of the forehead, were examined microscopically. Demodex sp. was found to be positive in five (2.9%) cases.

Abstract

Purpose: To determine the renal resistive index profile in cirrhotic patients before and after propranolol treatment and assess the effects of propranolol on renal hemodynamics., Materials and Methods: Thirty-six patients with cirrhosis and ascites (decompensated group), 39 patients with cirrhosis but no ascites (compensated group) and 25 patients with normal renal and hepatic functions (control group) were studied. All had normal blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels. The renal resistive index was calculated in all patients before and after oral propranolol treatment., Results: Resistive index was significantly higher in the decompensated group (p<0.05) than in other groups. After propranolol treatment, resistive indices decreased in the compensated patients (p<0.05) but increased in the decompensated group (p<0.05). There was a slight but statistically insignificant increase in the control group., Conclusion: In patients with cirrhosis renal failure is a significant risk factor for liver transplantation. In these patients, Doppler sonography provides early detection of renal dysfunction even before renal function tests are abnormal. Doppler sonography is a useful noninvasive method to evaluate the effects of drugs on renal hemodynamics.
