The historic urban landscape of Suriçi, referred to as the Sur District in Diyarbakır, has been damaged due to both the effects of rural to urban migration and certain social events. The historic urban landscape of Suriçi District witnessed social events known as the "Hendek Olayları" among the public in 2016. This risk factor, occurring in an area with numerous registered administrative, cultural, religious, and commercial structures, as well as many examples of civilian architecture, has threatened and caused damage to numerous cultural assets. Observations indicate that civilian architectural examples in the region were also affected by these events. The registered cultural heritage, which is the subject of the article, is located in this area where the events took place. The traditional Diyarbakır house, which is the subject of the study, partially damaged and subject to various changes according to needs, was functioning as a café before the events began. The article discusses both the preparatory stages and the conservation efforts carried out in the field. The conservation practices of the registered cultural heritage located in Parcel 28-29 of Plot 382 in the southeastern part of the Suriçi District have been focused on in the study. Restoration and reconstruction practices, observed from a conservationist perspective, have been examined, and detailed information about the conducted works has been shared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUILDING repair , *HISTORIC buildings , *PUBLIC building design & construction , *CITIES & towns , *ARCHITECTURAL style , *GIFT giving , *PRESERVATION of architecture - Abstract
Historical buildings are among the most important cultural heritages transferred from past generations to the present. These structures, which reflect the cultural structure of the society and the architectural and urban style of the period in which they were built, are documents that need to be preserved and are works of universal quality. Developing cities and differentiating needs have increased the interest in refunctioning, which is used as a method for the preservation of historical buildings. Re-functioning is a protection method that provides a different function to buildings that cannot meet today's comfort needs and cannot be used in their original form, allowing them to continue to be used. The maintenance and repair of historical buildings that have been re-functioned are prevented from disappearing by making them permanent and transferring them to future generations is ensured. However, these structures provide important contributions to the economies of cities, cultural tourism and promotion. With the zoning and city regulations under the influence of westernization that started in the Tanzimat Period, many public buildings began to be built in the Ottoman Empire. Sultan II. During the reign of Abdulhamid between 1876-1909, public buildings built in many cities are important structures that reflect the power and authority of the state. With the effect of social and economic developments, the development process of the city started with the construction of public buildings and many monumental and historical buildings in the city. Government mansions are the most important of the public structures built in different provinces and provinces towards the end of the 19th century, where the power and authority of the state are shown. Squares were created around the government mansions with the addition of other public buildings. It is known that the government mansions and other public buildings built during the Ottoman Period were under the influence of Western (Italian) architecture. Today, public buildings have been built in Diyarbakır Province, which is one of the important centers of the Southeastern Anatolia Region, and the historical building diversity of the city has been increased. Ergani is one of the big districts of Diyarbakir city. Ergani Government Mansion was built in accordance with the architectural style of the government mansions built during the Tanzimat Period. In the Ergani Government House, which was built in a rectangular plan and two storeys, the oratory balcony, which is one of the architectural elements of the government mansions, and the traditional plan order have been preserved. Restoration work was carried out in Ergani Government House (2010) and it was organized as a museum by giving it a new function. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the current situation after the functionalization with the architectural analysis of the re-functioning work carried out within the scope of Ergani Government House, which is functioned as a museum, and to present suggestions about the sustainability of the building. In the field study, visual analyzes were made with photographs taken on site and determinations were made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CITIES & towns , *HISTORICAL source material , *ECONOMIC models , *PRESERVATION of architecture , *ORIGINALITY , *INTEGRITY - Abstract
Traditional buildings reflect the cultural, social, and economic characteristics of the period in which they were built and the way of life and ensure that these qualities survive until today. Since the buildings gain a meaning and integrity with the historical texture around them, the concept of conservation has reached the urban scale from a single building scale in time. While trying to respond to development and change without losing the originality of urban sites, it should be able to maintain its feature as a historical document. Therefore, the need for integrated conservation, defined as a legal, administrative, social, and economic conservation model, has emerged. In this context, in our country, conservation development plans (KAIP) are being prepared for integrated conservation of urban sites. These plans, which have difficulty in responding to the changing, transforming, dynamic cities, can be revised over time. After the revisions, conservation strategies, parcel designs, densities, functions, construction conditions and the authorities and responsibilities of the conservation actors may change. The revision in the provisions of the plan shows itself most clearly during the licensed interventions that include restoration, reconstruction applications, and restructuring rather than simple repairs such as modification, repair, and maintenance within the site. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of KAIP revisions on both number and type of licensed interventions in the urban sites. For this purpose, new licensed interventions in the Odunpazarı urban site were identified and the effect of KAIP revisions on these interventions was reported. In the evaluation made within the scope of the study, it was stated that there were 20 new building licenses in total and there were no restoration and reconstruction applications during the KAIP period of 1988, nine new constructions, three restorations and one reconstruction license were obtained during the KAIP period of 1997, 35 new buildings, restorations and 5 reconstruction licenses were obtained during the KAIP period of 2011. In conclusion, it has been determined that the KAIP revisions, which are the result of the efforts of the urban sites to keep up with the change and development, affect the type and number of interventions in the historical texture. DACITE , *HISTORIC buildings , *STONE , *BUILDING stones , *QUARTZ crystals , *PRESERVATION of architecture , *ROCKFALL - Abstract
In order to properly protect and restore cultural assets, it is important to correctly identify the natural materials used in historical buildings and determine the origin of these materials and the quarries they were taken from. This study therefore examines the rampart building stones of Ankara Castle, which is one of the most important historical buildings in the city, and determines the locations of the quarries used in its construction. In the study, samples were taken from the castle, rampart walls and the rocks in the castle's foundation. The samples were then compared mineralogically, petrographically and geochemically with other samples taken from quarries where the stones may possibly have originated from. Ankara Castle, which is located in the Altındağ district of Ankara, is comprised of an inner and an outer castle. The castle was basically built on vertically articulated andesite rock and has the same composition as the rampart stones. Brick and limestone were also used in certain parts of the rampart walls. The rampart stones are mainly composed of pink porphyroafanitic textured andesites, but also contain locally crystallized and biosparitic limestone. Andesites are seen to have a hyaloplitic porphyritic texture when examined under the microscope, and consist mainly of plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, ± quartz and opaque minerals. Quartz and plagioclase crystals are embayed and the plagioclase was also zoned. Kaolinization, chloritization and opacification type alterations were detected in the andesites. These rocks, which are composed of quartz andesite, contain high levels of K-calcalkaline. In order to determine the origins of the rocks used in the construction of the rampart walls, andesite samples were compared with other samples taken from different locations around the castle and Ankara. It was determined that the rampart andesite samples most resemble those taken from seven old quarries on Yenidogan Hill. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OTTOMAN Empire , *BUILDING design & construction , *NINETEENTH century , *WAREHOUSING & storage , *PENINSULAS , *PRESERVATION of architecture - Abstract
In the 19th century, new types of buildings began to appear in the Ottoman lands according to the conditions. In addition to this, the construction of buildings whose examples have been going on for a long time has continued. One of these is the derelict structure located in the Dalyan Bosporus area of the Köyceğiz district of Muğla province, approximately 7 km west of the Çandır Village. The structure is located on a small peninsula close to the beach. The building, which is still standing today, has a rectangular plan in the east-west direction and is adjacent to each other. It is difficult to determine the function of the building requiring restoration at the beginning. However, it can be understood when looking at the features location some official correspondence from the Ottoman period of the building. It is thought that the building was a designed for the storage of goods transported for small-scale maritime trade and for the stay of the officials who was carry out these duties. Zeyrek Çinili Bath is a double bath, which is important in terms of its architecture, traditional heating system and decorative elements. As a result of the Çinili Bath Conservation- Repair and Rehabilitation Project, which was started in 2010, the bath function of the building and the resulting kalemişi will be preserved. This structure was built in order to bring income to the foundations established by Barbarossa Hayrettin Pasha in Istanbul. Although Zeyrek Çinili Hamam does not have a construction or revival inscription, there is no doubt that it was built by the Chief Architect Sinan. The name of the bath is mentioned in the biographies that list the structures built by Mimar Sinan and in the charter of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha. Mimar Sinan has always been in search of new ones in the plan scheme of bath architecture, provided that he adheres to the basic principles of Turkish classical baths. As a result of the restoration works, the kalemişi in the men’s and women’s dressing areas of the bath, which added a different dimension to the building, was brought to light. The first layer of kalemişi during the repairs after the Cibali fires belong to 1850. The most qualified kalemişi that have survived to the present day are dated to the years 1850-1890. The kalemişi, which are dated to the 19th century and applied in two periods, are brought to the literature for the first time with this article. While the decorations of the lower sections are in layers applied on top of each other, the black and white kalemişi work on the upper sections of the walls and the dome transition is in a single layer. A comparison was made between the kalemişi added to the Classical Period buildings in the 19th century and these decorations, and the similarities were revealed with examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUILDING design & construction , *BUILDING envelopes , *OPEN spaces , *BUILDING performance , *URBANIZATION , *ENERGY conservation in buildings , *PRESERVATION of architecture - Abstract
In this article, in today's conditions, a situation evaluation has been made about the necessity of making open and green spaces that can be produced within the buildings. Evaluation was made by comparing and discussing the data summarized below, which were obtained through literature review. While the open and green spaces in the buildings make important contributions to the restoration of the nature damaged by urbanization, it has also been seen that they have positive effects on the health and welfare of the urbanites and the performance of the building envelope. In addition to all these positive effects, it has been observed that the open and green spaces in the buildings emerge with additional loads and more complex design and construction processes in the buildings. It has been seen that above mentioned negativities are mainly caused by lack of information and cost increases. It has been seen that the lack of knowledge can be completed with educational studies, and the cost increases can be compensated from the gains in the increase of urbanites' health and welfare. As a result of the evaluation, the necessity of producing open and green spaces has emerged in the buildings of densely built urban areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESERVATION of architecture , *GREEKS , *ARMENIANS , *SCHOOL buildings , *GEOGRAPHY , *TURKS - Abstract
Anatolia has hosted different religions and cultures over the years. In addition to Turks, nations such as Greeks and Armenians have lived together in this geography for centuries. These nations reflected their own cultures to the regions they lived in. These nations have built a large number of architectural works, especially the educational structure. In this study, the schools built by the Greeks in Niğde were examined. The aim of this study is to document the schools and to determine the current situation. In addition, it is to specify the measures that can be taken for their protection and to propose new functions. Within the scope of the study, the structures of Uluağaç Greek School, Sasima Greek School, Prodromos Greek School and Ballı Greek School were examined. Architectural features were evaluated. Today, Prodromos Greek School is under renovation to be converted into a vocational course center. The other three schools; It is faced with protection problems such as being dysfunctional as a result of the absence of the user and exposure to unfavorable natural conditions. For this reason, re-function suggestions were made for these three buildings as a conservation proposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESERVATION of architecture , *FAMILY size , *VERNACULAR architecture , *PATRIARCHY , *SOCIAL space , *PUBLIC spaces - Abstract
In the structures that have survived from the past to the present, the spaces have been shaped according to the socio-cultural lifestyle of the society and have been rearranged according to their changes over time. Lifestyles, religious beliefs, the desire to protect family unity played a great role in the formation of spaces in the buildings. In societies with a patriarchal family system, living spaces and spaces have been built in sizes suitable for the size of the family, and social spaces where the whole family can spend time together have been created. In this study, in addition to its historical importance in Diyarbakir traditional architecture, CemilpaĢa Mansion, which has a very special and important place in terms of plan layout, has been examined with the spatial analyzes from the past to the present day. CemilpaĢa Mansion is the only one among the mansions in Diyarbakır, where the harem and salutation sections have survived to the present day. The mansion's uniqueness in its architecture and layout and the preservation of the traces of the past in the spaces made this mansion special and constituted an important factor in its selection for our study. Although the original architecture of the mansion has not changed in general today, significant changes and transformations have been observed in the use of the spaces in the mansion. After the literature study about the mansion, the books about the CemilpaĢa Family were examined, and oral interviews were held with experts about the past uses of the mansion. In the study, the personal photographs and documents belonging to the CemilpaĢa Family and the past use of the harem-selamlık spaces were examined, and the effects and reflections of the traces of the past on the formation of the spaces were investigated. The work has been completed by making determinations about the re-functioning of CemilpaĢa Mansion, which has been converted into a city museum today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

URBAN life , *HISTORIC buildings , *CITIES & towns , *LOCAL government , *CULTURAL policy , *PRESERVATION of architecture ,URBAN ecology (Sociology) - Abstract
Projects of local governments, especially in the points of urban protected areas and feed the social, cultural and economic life of the city, have increased recently. In this study, the effect of urban regeneration projects implemented by local governments in the historical environment on the increase of the quality of urban life was measured. The model area of the study has determined as Şehitler Street Şehreküstü Neighborhood in Gaziantep Urban Protect Area. The study's aim is to evaluate the conservation activities on cultural assests of local administrations and to measure the opportunities offered by local policies to the region by improving the quality of life parameters. The study's methodology is to conduct a comprehensive literature review for measurements and to evaluate the impact of the region-specific parameters. Although the restoration of 16 historical buildings, including street transformations, is successful, today it is not sufficient for the evaluation of cultural policies. Consequently, field-specific evaluation of revival projects in the historical environment in the context of local policies has been made. Additionally, this study will be an useful base for prioritizing the next projects to be carried out in the region, considering their impact on the quality of urban life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESERVATION of commercial buildings , *PRESERVATION of architecture , *BUILDING maintenance , *COMMERCIAL buildings , *ARCHITECTURAL design - Abstract
The following study has the nature of a preliminary study in which determinations and proposals as to survey, restitution and restoration of Âşir Efendi Khân are discussed. It is possible to obtain information and findings in restoration works. Âşir Efendi Khân is situated in Eminönü quarter of the Fatih district of Istanbul within the boundaries of the historical peninsula. The big khân which most likely was built in 18th century has been subject to renovations in the century 19th and 20th centuries. The building where the commercial activities continue seems as a three-story building when viewed from Sultan Hamam Street and as a two-story building when viewed from Âşir Efendi Street. This difference in elevation is due to the excessive slope of the building to the northwest. The building is categorized as three-story commercial buildings considering the elevation difference (partially). The khân which is a great deal far from its authentic identity clearly is in need of restoration. The study includes recommendations that will contribute to restoration efforts. BUILDING materials research , *PRESERVATION of architecture , *ARCHITECTURAL designs , *INTELLECTUAL property , *FACADES , *PRIMARY commodities , *CONSTRUCTION contracts - Abstract
The material defined as "artificial stone", frequently used on the façades of the late 19th and early 20th century buildings, is a mixture of binder, aggregate and other additives and may either be applied directly as a coating on wall surfaces or precast in moulds and then attached to façades as decorative architectural elements. One of the effects of the Industrial Revolution in 19th century was a tendency to standardize architectural production, which in turn moved away from time-consuming and costly traditional techniques in search of those in accordance with the dynamic social, economic and cultural structure of the period. One of the resulting solutions was the rapidly mass-produced artificial stones that replaced the traditional stone masonry. The aim of this research is to evaluate the use of artificial stone on the exterior façades of buildings dated to turn of the last century in terms of architecture and conservation science. The program includes a detailed research in written sources focusing on material history, studying their invention, development and use as well as architectural design and construction techniques and styles. The sources which may be categorized as a history of materials and techniques, including books, booklets, reports and patent texts are very colourful, detailed and bear much first-hand information as well as extensive cross-references. It is very interesting to see that not only these early modern scientist but also the authors who are in fact master craftsmen were very well informed about the work of their predecessors as well as that of their colleagues in different countries. Turkey and more specifically Istanbul, located on the periphery of these developments in architecture, techniques and materials, was also affected contemporaneously. However, it is only partially possible to trace this transformation in publications and archive material. The main sources of information are the period buildings themselves. Thus, the use of artificial stone was evaluated with reference to architectural, material and application characteristics. Field-work enabled the selection of ca. 30 buildings for sampling, and the number was reduced to 15 in the final stage, focusing on those buildings reflecting the characteristics of their period. Samples were taken from various types of artificial stone used in architectural programs of different styles. Generally speaking, artificial stones consist of flat plaster coatings applied in-situ and architectural elements with decorative reliefs, some of which may be loadbearing and which may be produced with different types of moulds either in-situ or precast at the workshop. … [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESERVATION of architecture , *CULTURAL property , *CHANGE , *INTERNATIONAL agencies , *ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. , *NINETEENTH century , *ARCHAEOLOGICAL research - Abstract
The idea of preservation of cultural treasures, which started in Europe at the beginning of 19th century, seen in Turkey first at the end of 19th century. Notion of preservation changed in time from the preservation of individual objects to integrated preservation, from the preservation of the object alone to the preservation of the values that the object represented, from isolated preservation to continuous preservation and despite it's short history it took a probable final stage in consideration of principles. The most important factor in this change is the activities of the international organisations. These activities, closely monitored in our country, has been adopted in principle by the concerned institutions. The aim of this research is to consider the development of preservation and restoration in historical process at length and to assess the current position of the preservation and restoration as a science and in theory and practice. For this reason the related institutions, their practices and the results of these practices will be assessed. The intent of the mention of negative elements in this research is not to stain the work of the much needed and important organisations but just by the mention of the flaws to reach some propositional results. Despite it is not mentioned in this research, related people, foundations and institutions have some very important works on the subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
