Objective: This study aimed to assess the association between women's platelet indices and bone mineral density to evaluate osteoporosis, which has a significant impact on quality of life throughout the postmenopausal age. Materials and Methods: The study was retrospectively designed, and data from 316 postmenopausal patients who applied to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic between January 2021 and January 2023, underwent bone mineral density measurements during follow-up, and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were obtained. The data were evaluated in 3 groups as normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis according to bone mineral density. Platelet indices, age, body mass index (BMI), and bone mineral density were compared with platelet indices in the hemogram results of the patients on the same day. Results: The mean ages of the osteoporosis, osteopenia, and normal groups were 61.4, 58.4, and 56.2 years, respectively. The mean weight was 72.9 kg in the osteoporosis group, 74.09 kg in the osteopenia group, and 79.4 kg in the normal group. When the groups were compared, no significant difference was observed between age, platelet count, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-large cell ratio, and thrombocytocrit but a significant difference was found between the osteoporosis and normal groups in terms of BMI (p=0.027). Conclusion: Although numerous studies in the literature have demonstrated a connection between osteoporosis and MPV and platelet count, our investigation revealed no such association and showed that the risk of osteoporosis decreased as BMI increased. Objectives: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a common disorder among children and is often associated with dry eye disease (DED). While researchers have shown a higher prevalence of psychopathology in older patients with DED, the impact of CVS-induced DED on the psychological state of children is not well known. This study aimed to evaluate psychological outcomes before and after DED treatment in pediatric patients with CVS-related DED. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 38 children (32 girls, 6 boys) with CVS-related DED were evaluated with the Schirmer test, tear break-up time (TBUT), ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and Oxford grading scale at the time of diagnosis and after treatment with artificial tear drops. Additionally, quality of life (QoL) and anxiety and depression symptoms were assessed using self-report scales for children. Results: The mean age and mean daily screen exposure of the patients were 13.95±2.42 years and 5.65±2.31 hours, respectively. After treatment, TBUT and Schirmer test values of the patients increased significantly, while OSDI values decreased (p

Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a non-articular, chronic rheumatic disease with unknown etiology, characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, sleep disorder, fatigue, and the presence of numerous tender points. Working with the shift work and night shift system contradicts the normal biological rhythm of the body and negatively affects the person in many ways. The complaint of sleep disorder is widespread in patients with FM; close to 100% prevalence has been reported in some studies. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between fibromyalgia and shift working order in our hospital staff. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in our university hospital. 120 people who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study, and 80 were accepted. As a control group, 95 people were reached, 80 of whom agreed to participate in the study. The Fibromyalgia Impact Scale (FES) was questioned in cases with fibromyalgia. The SF-36 quality of life questionnaire was applied to all the cases in which the study was conducted. 1990 ACR Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria were used for diagnosis. The Fibromyalgia Impact Scale (FES) was questioned in cases with FM.Results: The average score of all SF-36 quality of life questionnaire sub-field groups was significantly higher in the control group than in the group who stand duty (p

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease known for its progressive prognosis which may be associated with delay in diagnosis. Its etiology can be composed of different modalities involving genetic, psychiatric, and social factors. Findings and observations from clinical settings, motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, tremor, and rigidity have been reported. In addition, non-motor symptoms, such as depression and cognitive dysfunctions have been demonstrated. Moreover, decrease in quality of life has been reported in people with Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Although multidisciplinary studies on Parkinson's disease indicated general the molecular and radiological findings of the disease, inconsistent data are reported in terms of modalities such as cognitive functioning, depression, and quality of life. The present study aims to present the current perspective in the context of quality of life by examining the findings reported in the cognitive and psychiatric context of Parkinson's disease. According to the findings of this study, cognitive impairments that can be identified based on the course of the disease, manifesting in various forms such as attention, memory, and visual-spatial skills, negatively impact the quality of life for patients. The emergence of depression or depression-like symptoms can further decrease the overall quality of life for individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Aim: Because of its chronic nature, epilepsy is a complex disease with psychosocial effects. This study aimed to investigate the stigma and quality of life of individuals with epilepsy. Methods: This study was conducted between January 2022 and September 2022 in the epilepsy outpatient clinic of a university hospital located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, participants completed the Stigma Scale for Epilepsy (SSE), the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-10 (QOLIE-10), and a sociodemographic data form. Results: The study included 130 patients (83 women and 47 men) with epilepsy. 56.2% of the participants had a medium stigmatization scores and 14.6% had a high stigmatization scores. It was determined that stigmatization was associated with age, education level, employment, and income. Total score of (SSE); participants aged 51 and over, primary school graduates, never worked, and receiving minimum wage were higher. The total SSE score did not differ according to gender, marital status, people with whom they lived together, date of diagnosis, duration of treatment, or date of the last seizure. Participants who had a seizure in the previous year without income had a lower quality-of-life score. It was determined that the QOLIE-10 scores did not differ in terms of gender, age, marital status, employment, education level, people they lived with, date of diagnosis, duration of treatment, and type of epilepsy. Conclusion: The participants with high levels of stigma experienced a significant reduction in quality of life compared with the other groups. Therefore, the potential need for increased support and social rehabilitation for individuals affected by stigmatization should not ignored.

This descriptive study was conducted to examine the genital hygiene, quality of life, and urinary incon-tinence awareness of post-menopausal women aged 55 and older living in the earthquake region after the disaster. The study was carried out between 07.07.2023 and 20.01.2024, with the participation of women who were 55 years old or older, lived in the Arsuz District of Hatay City, and met the inclusion criteria. Socio-demographic data form, Urinary Incontinence Awareness and Attitude Scale, The Utian Quality of Life Scale, and Genital Hygiene Behaviour Scale were used to evaluate the participants in the study. The average age of the participants in the study was 64.05± 8.04. 55% of the participants were illiterate, and 42% were primary school graduates. 55% of the participants were diagnosed with incon-tinence before the disaster, and 31 participants (%9.68) stated that the frequency of incontinence increased after the disaster. In the study, it was revealed that participants had lower quality of life due to the disaster (X̄±SS=64.41±10.06). Additionally, they were aware of urinary incontinence as a health problem (X̄±SS=35.76±4.10) and experienced fear of urinary leakage due to incontinence (X̄±SS=10.76±2.95). In addition, in the urinary incontinence awareness assessment, it was shown that the participants had high health motivation regarding urinary incontinence, which they perceived as a health problem. However, some participants have reported an increase in urinary incontinence follow-ing the earthquake. This situation especially suggests that post-earthquake living conditions may negatively affect hygiene practices and reduce the quality of life by causing health problems. Therefore, the hygiene and health problems experienced by women in disaster situations need to be considered.

Aim: Many psychiatric disorders are associated with psoriasis. A 16-item self-report maladaptive daydreaming (MD) scale (MDS-16) is described as a screening tool for MD. We aimed to explore whether MDS-16 scores differed in psoriasis patients compared to healthy individuals, hypothesizing higher scores and higher rates of probable maladaptive daydreamers (MDers) among psoriazis patients. Materials and Methods: We included 184 psoriazis patients and 93 age- and sex-matched people without any cutaneous disorders in this case-control, cross-sectional, and questionnaire-based study. Dermatology Quality of Life Instrument in Turkish (TQoL) and MDS-16 were applied. We considered the participants with a total MDS-16 score ≥50 as probable MDers. Results: Total MDS-16 score was higher in the psoriasis group (p=0.038). However, the difference between the frequencies of probable MDers was not significant (p=0.234). According to the multivariable analysis, psoriasis was not found as an independent risk factor for being probable MDer. In the psoriasis group, total MDS-16 scores were positively correlated with TQoL scores (rs=0.259, p=0.001), which were significantly higher in probable MDers (p=0.032). Conclusion: The association between psoriasis and MD may be related to the level of the impact of psoriasis on the quality of life.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of age-related imbalance (presbiastasis) on adaptation score, fall risk and quality of life in elderly individuals. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective study. 454 individuals (60 years and older) with videonystagmography, Video Head Impulse Test and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials test results were analyzed and those with central pathology and peripheral vestibular pathology were excluded. Forty-five individuals who met the criteria were included. Eleven were male and 34 were female (male/female ratio 1/3). The mean age was 63.67±7.21 years. The participants were divided into two groups: Group 1 with a history of falls (n=27 individuals) and Group 2 without a history of falls (n=18 individuals). Computerized Dynamic Posturography results were also evaluated and used as a sub-parameter of the adaptation test. Fall Efficacy Scale (FES) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS-fear of falling) were used to assess falls and fear of falling. World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Elderly (WHOQOL-elderly) scores were examined and compared to assess quality of life. Results: When the results of the FES (p=0.003) and VAS (fear of falling) (p=0.001) for falls and balance between Group 1 and Group 2 were analyzed, it was determined that there were significant differences between the groups. In addition, significant differences were found between Group 1 and Group 2 in the sub-parameters of the WHOQOL-Elderly scale to assess quality of life, including emotionality (p=0.004), functionality (p=0.002), autonomy (p=0.004), past, present, future activities (p=0.004) and social participation (p=0.05) scores. As a result of the comparison of adaptation test scores, a statistically significant relationship was found between the two groups (p<0.05). In addition, in the correlation analysis performed between adaptation test scores and the scores of FES and VAS (fear of falling), it was determined that there was a significant positive correlation with FES scores and a significant negative correlation with VAS (fear of falling) scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: It has been demonstrated that the adaptation test is a valuable parameter for assessing the risk of falls in elderly individuals with presbyastasia. Furthermore, the scores of FES and VAS (fear of falling) were found to be highly effective in identifying the risk of falls. These findings underscore the significance of utilizing adaptation testing to assess fall risk and evaluate balance functions in elderly individuals experiencing age-related imbalance complaints. Moreover, it is believed that these tests can serve as valuable tools in designing rehabilitation programs for elderly individuals with imbalance complaints. Consequently, incorporating assessment parameters such as FES, VAS, and adaptation score may enhance the efficacy of balance-focused rehabilitation programs for elderly individuals. Aim: Childhood cancers are life-threatening diseases which are universally distressing and potentially traumatic for children and their families at the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and beyond. Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine child patients between the ages of 0-18 years receiving treatment in a pediatric oncology hospital for various pediatric cancers who consented to participate in this study were recruited. The participants were assessed via Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version-Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition/K-SADS-PL-DSM-5 for ages 6-18 by a trained and certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. The clinical assessments of patients aged 0-5 years were completed by a trained child and adolescent psychiatrist in agreement with the DSM-5 and the standard principles of psychiatric interview for the pediatric population. The previous and current psychiatric diagnoses of the participants were recorded. The Quality-of-Life Scale for Children was administered to the participants and their caregivers at the first interview and at the 6th month of follow-up. Results: While no significant differences were observed in the quality of life of children with a novel pediatric cancer diagnosis and children with cancer recurrence/ongoing treatment per their own reports, the parents reported significant improvement in the quality of life of those children who had a novel cancer diagnosis after six months. Conclusion: The parents’ and their children’s reports were highly correlated, and this association remained significant in multiple linear regression analyses for both the initial interviews and the follow-ups. The parents’ reports on their children’s quality of life appear to be reliable in accurately predicting their children’s quality of life in the clinical setting.

Insomnia disorder, causing personal and societal costs, is a psychiatric disorder characterized by difficulties in falling asleep, maintaining sleep, and waking up earlier than planned in the morning. Approximately 10% of the population suffers from insomnia. Previous studies have shown that insomnia disorder reduces the overall quality of life, decreases daily functionality, leads to impairments in some psychomotor and cognitive skills, reduces job performance, causes more absenteeism at work, and increases treatment costs for disorders other than insomnia. Moreover, insomnia is a risk factor for different psychiatric disorders. Research conducted over the last 50 years has led to the emergence of various models to explain insomnia disorder from psychological viewpoints. These psychological models can be listed as the "stimulus control model", "Spielman model", "microanalytic model", "neurocognitive model", "high-risk model of threat perception", "sleep interfering-sleep interpreting processes model", "psychobiological inhibition model", "cognitive model", "evolutionary-emotional model", and "fear simulation model". The aim of this review article is to present an up-todate picture of the psychological models of insomnia by outlining the basic assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gut microbiota are a rich community containing beneficial, pathogenic, or opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms with diverse biochemical abilities. It has many functions such as strengthening gut integrity, protecting against pathogens, obtaining energy, and modulating host immunity. If the composition of the gut microbiota is changed, the relationship between gut integrity and host health is damaged and many neurological mechanisms are disrupted. Insomnia is an important disease that reduces the quality of life and causes many serious diseases from depression to heart attack. Today, the importance of maintaining the delicate balance of gut microbiota has become increasingly evident in order to improve insomnia or alleviate the symptoms of illness. Many factors (nutrition, genetics, age, stress, immunologic gradients, diseases, environment, etc.) affect this balance. In particular, the number and distribution of species in the gut microbiota and the balance of their secondary metabolites are altered with changes in the permeability of the intestinal epithelium in patients with insomnia. The differences in the composition of gut microbiota of patients and healthy people prove the importance of microbiota. Currently, traditional acupuncture applications, probiotic, prebiotic, and symbiotic diets are recommended for the treatment of insomnia, and there is a lot of scientific evidence about the effectiveness of these strategies in regulating gut microbiota. In this review, the close relationship between gut microbiota and insomnia has been explained in the scientific literature. In addition, it contributes to the understanding of microbiota importance in the microbiome-gut-brain axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUALITY of life - Abstract
Creative industry workers play a significant role in the growth of urban economy and migration of the creative class (CC) is a major dimension of economic migration in modern economies. Highly talented individuals are more mobile than other workers, and their spatial preferences differ from those of other employees. Many factors influence the migration tendencies of the CC. tolerance, talent, and technology factors (Florida, 2002), determine the attractiveness of cities, and both soft and hard factors can influence locational preferences. Besides better income and living standards, various factors play a role. Quality of Life (QoL) is one of these factors and plays a significant role in locational preferences. This factor creates a magnet-like environment attracting other creative professionals from different cities. In terms of creative sectors, Istanbul holds a significant share. However, recent times display a rising trend of creative migration. This paper intends to analyze migration trends of the CC from Istanbul to Izmir, through the lens of QoL and decipher the reasons why the CC of a leading city in culture and creative industries, migrate to a lower-rank city in cultural economy. The study questions whether the Creative Migration Theory parameters fully explain the local experience (migration from İstanbul to Izmir) by way of investigating migration tendencies of the CC through the indicators of QoL. The research shows that creative migration to Izmir has different reasons and motivations. Findings indicate that the reasons for CC migration from Istanbul to Izmir are related to their satisfaction levels and living standards in terms of social, environmental, economic and physical aspects. Although Izmir does not stand out as an upper-rank city according to the CC Theory and the parameters QoL, it still attracts the CC. in its impact, Izmir constitutes an asymmetric example for mobility of the CC. - Abstract
Cancer is a disease that requires long-term treatment, reduces the patient's quality of life and may even result in death. Empowering cancer patients by increasing their level of knowledge and awareness about their disease and ensuring their active participation play an important role in the success of the treatment process. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of patient empowerment on quality of life in cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment in a public oncology hospital in Ankara. In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was applied to 400 cancer patients. The data collection tool consists of Patient Empowerment Scale, SF-12 Quality of Life Scale and sociodemographic questions. It was found that patient empowerment and quality of life were higher in singles, those in the upper income group, young people, those with at least a bachelor's degree, teachers and those who did not have children. A moderate positive significant relationship was found between patient empowerment and quality of life. It is thought that it would be beneficial to support trainings for patient empowerment with digital platforms and to carry out studies that will raise awareness in patients and healthcare personnel, especially nurses who are in close contact with patients. - Abstract
In this study, the effectiveness of treadmill exercise on smoking cessation was examined, together with its effect on sleep quality and quality of life. Forty people who wanted to quit smoking were randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group participated in a 15-session treadmill exercise program, while the control group did not receive any intervention for smoking cessation. Participants; demographic information was recorded. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale, quality of life was assessed using the Quality of Life Scale-Short Form, and dyspnea severity was assessed using the Modified Borg Scale. The severity of dyspnea decreased significantly in the experimental group after treatment. Both groups showed improvement in sleep quality after treatment. Sub-dimensions of the quality of life scale increased in the experimental group after treatment. In addition, the number of participants with cachexia and obesity decreased in the experimental group. On the other hand, no significant change was detected in the quality of life and body mass index classification of the control group. The study concluded that smoking cessation accompanied by treadmill exercise not only reduces the severity of dyspnea but also improves quality of life, sleep quality, and overall health perception. This may be useful for individuals trying to quit smoking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an era of urbanization, urban livability is a critical concern. This study explores the relationship between administrative capacity and urban livability in Türkiye's 81 provinces. Recent global attention to administrative capacity highlights its role in governance and societal progress. The research emphasizes the importance of enhancing administrative capacity for positive outcomes, including improved urban livability, and examines the impact of provincial administrative capacity on urban livability geographically. A robust administrative capacity is crucial for effective public institutions, from local to international levels. Recent research shows it fosters better institution performance, economic growth, democracy, policy effectiveness, conflict prevention, counterterrorism, and local democracy. Among such contributions administrative capacity is also key to a city's success, attracting residents and businesses, enhancing urban livability. In order to reveal such dynamic, the study covers all 81 Turkish provinces, testing geographic variations in the impact of administrative capacity on livability. It uses provincial administrative capacity and Forbes Magazine's livability index in global and geographical regression models. The results confirm a strong relationship between provincial administrative capacity and urban livability. Geographically, this impact varies across regions. In conclusion, the research reveals the importance of administrative capacity in shaping urban livability. Policymakers and urban planners should focus on enhancing administrative competence to improve residents' quality of life, fostering informed decision-making and policy formulation for livable cities.
