- Abstract
Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge about rabies disease of health workers working at rabies vaccine centers in Ankara and the effectiveness of the training on rabies. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive type study. In October 2018, 154 health personnel working in the relevant units of the various health institutions serving in Ankara, who participated in the “Prophylaxis in Rabies Disease” training organized by the Ankara Provincial Directorate of Public Health Services in 2 rounds. In this study, a questionnaire consisting of 10 basic questions was used to measure the knowledge level of the participants about rabies disease. The same questionnaire was used before and after the training. Descriptive analyses were presented using number and percentage for categorical variables; mean, standard deviation, median, 1st and 3rd quarter values for continuous variables. Results: Of the participants, 78.57% (n = 121) were female, 21.42% (n = 33) were male; The mean age was 38.32 ± 8.19. 22.08% (n = 34) of the participants were specialists, 18.18% (n = 28) were physicians and 59.74% (n= 92) were assisted health personnel. The median score of the participants before the training was 50 (60‐80) after 50 (30‐60) training (p <0.001). Pre‐test and posttest scores were 60 (40‐60), 70 (60‐ 80) in specialist physicians (p <0.001); 60 (50‐70), 65 (50‐80) (p = 0.006) and 45 (30‐60), 70 (60‐80), respectively. According to the total score of the test, 18.18% of the participants had adequate knowledge level and 61.04% after the training (p <0.001). Conclusion: The level of knowledge of rabies disease was found to be low. It is recommended that the institutions concerned with the training of health workers should focus on this issue and that aftergraduation, the necessary in‐service training should be given periodically.
