Therapeutic apheresis is a procedure of separation of plasma or other cellular components from whole blood as a treatment modality. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a replacement of large volumes of patient plasma by replacement fluids. TPE is a therapeutic apheresis that is used as first line or supportive treatment mainly in hematology, neurology, oncology, rheumatology, immunology, nephrology, endocrinology, toxicology and dermatology. Monoclonal auto-alloantibodies, immune complexes, cryoglobulins, lipoproteins, macromoleculles, protein bound toxins that may cause metabolic or physical problems are removed from the plasma with TPE. In 2007, American Society For Apheresis (ASFA) made some changes in the indications and categories of therapeutic apheresis and TPE with the lights of new evidences. In this paper we will discuss the indications of TPE in hematological diseases, according to new ASFA 2007 guideline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
