Purpose: This study was planned to evaluate the relationship between pulmonary function and some anthropometric measurements and body composition in healthy young women with different body mass index (BMI). Materials and Methods: One hundred seventeen (n:117) women, aged between 19-30 years, participated in this study. Some anthropometric measurements of the participants (body weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, and neck circumference) and body composition were evaluated by the researchers. Results: There was no difference in forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and FEV1/FVC values of individuals according to BMI classification. In terms of disease risk according to anthropometric measurements, no difference was found between the groups in the pulmonary function test values (except for the waist circumference). Participants whose waist circumference were 80-88 cm were found to have a significantly higher FEV1/FVC value than participants whose waist circumference were >88 cm. It was determined that there was a positive correlation between body weight, lean body mass, body fat mass, total body water values, and FVC, FEV1 values. Conclusion: Differences in body composition and anthropometric measurements and pulmonary function assessment may be due to methodological and group-specific changes in the studies. Long-term studies that question the body composition of individuals, food consumption and physical activity levels, will be beneficial.

Osteoporosis is defined as a disease characterized by a decrease in bone mineral content and derangement in bone microarchitecture, leading to skeletal fragility with a consequent increased fracture risk. Osteoporosis of the spine results in pain, disability and an overall decrease in quality of life. Whereas toracic hyperkyphosis is a well-known consequence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures, there is quite less information in the literature on the concomitant association with impairments in pulmonary function. Therefore, we aimed to review the currently available literature on impairments in pulmonary function in patients with osteoporosis. (From the World of Osteoporosis 2010;16:61-5)

Aim: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures and increased kyphotic angle may cause disturbances in pulmonary functions. Our aim was to evaluate pulmonary function and quality of life in osteoporotic patients. Material and Methods: Fifty-one patients with osteoporosis and 19 osteopenic subject, followed in our outpatient clinic, were included. Their demographics were recorded. All the subjects were submitted to pulmonary function test (PFT) and dorsal lateral radiography was obtained to measure Cobb angle. Global body pain was assessed using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and quality of life was assessed using Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Results: The mean ages were 63.3±8.7 in osteoporosis and 55.3±7.3 in osteopenia groups (p=0.001). Body mass index of the osteoporosis group was significantly lower than osteopenia group (28.8±5.7 and 32.2±5.5, respectively, p=0.029). In osteoporosis group compared to osteopenia group, the absolute forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) (1.8±0.4 and 2.1±0.5, respectively, p=0.018) and absolute forced vital capacity (FVC) (2.2±0.5 and 2.6±0.6, respectively, p=0.005) were significantly lower. No differences were found between two groups concerning other PFT parameters. The mean Cobb angle was higher in osteoporosis group than osteopenia group, but the difference was not significant (32.7±12.4 and 28.5±9.5, respectively, p=0.194). When all the subjects were considered, no correlation was found between Cobb angle and PFT parameters (p>0.05). No significant difference was found between two groups in respect to VAS and SF-36 scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: We found absolute FEV1 and absolute FVC significantly lower in osteoporosis group compared to osteopenia group. But we observed no differences in % predicted FEV1 and % predicted FVC. We supposed that the differences were because the subjects in osteopenia group were younger and fatter. The pulmonary functions and quality of life of the osteoporotic patients with a kyphotic angle up to studied are not worse than the osteopenic people. (From the World of Osteoporosis 2009;15:11-5)

OBSTRUCTIVE lung diseases , *SOCIAL status , *THRESHOLD limit values (Industrial toxicology) , *DISEASE exacerbation , *PREVENTIVE medicine - Abstract
Socioeconomic status (SES) measured by educational and income levels has long been known to be associated with mortality from some diseases. Many studies from developed countries suggested that SES is associated with lung function and COPD exacerbation, prevalence and mortality. Socioeconomic disadvantage is an independent risk factor for COPD. The impact of low SES on respiratory disease in general has been attributed to poorer housing, more hazardous occupational exposure, poorer diet, a higher prevalence of smoking and respiratory infections in childhood. It was found that there was a significant negative correlation between lung function and SES. Childhood SES may influence pulmonary function in adulthood. Pulmonary functions decline earlier and faster for individual with lower childhood SES. It was reported that hospital admission rates for COPD in low SES group were higher than in the high SES group. There was not adequate data about relationship between SES and COPD in our country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PULMONARY function tests , *MUSCLE strength , *RESPIRATORY muscles , *HEART failure , *HEART diseases , *DISEASE progression - Abstract
Objective: This cross-sectional, observational study was planned to compare pulmonary function, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, and functional capacity in different functional classes of heart failure patients. Methods: Thirty-four heart failure patients, in New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II and III (68.59±9.84 years, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) =34.24±7.59%) were included. Class II and III patients' pulmonary function was assessed using spirometry, respiratory muscle strength using a mouth pressure device, functional capacity using six minute walk test (6MWT), quadriceps femoris and biceps brachii muscle strength were evaluated using a hand-held dynamometer, and variables were compared. Student t, Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Spearman correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength between the two groups (p>0.05). The 6MWT distance (328.35±101.56 m; vs. 480.05±104.19 m) quadriceps femoris (218.83±63.62 N; vs. 290.69±115.53 N) and biceps brachii (164.22±44.78 N; vs. 219.19±49.37 N) muscle strength of Class III patients were significantly lower than of Class II patients (p<0.05 for all). The NYHA classification system was significantly correlated with measured and predicted 6MWT distance (r=-0.59, r=-0.65, respectively), biceps brachii muscle strength (r=-0.46, r=-0.40, respectively), and % quadriceps femoris muscle strength (r=-0.43) (p<0.05). Conclusion: Functional capacity and peripheral muscle strength decrease as the illness progresses in heart failure. Pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength are preserved. The NYHA classification system is a reliable method in the detection of changes in functional capacity and peripheral muscle strength. Changes in functional capacity and peripheral muscle strength are consistent with the NYHA classification system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the effects of spinal immobilization devices on pulmonary functions. METHODS This study was a cross-over trial in healthy volunteer subjects; 60 volunteers were included. We performed a full spirometry in the supine position, and forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and FEV1/FVC were recorded in all subjects. Then, Philadelphia type cervical collar (Philly) and Kendrick extrication device (KED) were applied to all subjects. We measured FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC in all subjects in the supine position at the 5th and 30th minutes after application of cervical collar and KED. After a one-hour relaxation period, Philly and long spinal backboard with straps were applied to all subjects. FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC were measured again in all subjects at the 5th and 30th minutes after application of cervical collar and long spinal backboard. RESULTS After application of KED, baseline levels were compared with levels at the 5th and 30th minutes. Statistically significant decreases were determined in FEV1 (p0.000) and FVC levels (p0.000) after application of KED, but there were no significant differences in FEV1/FVC levels. After application of the long spinal backboard, a comparison of baseline levels and levels at the 5th and 30th minutes demonstrated statistically significant decreases in FEV1 (p0.000) and FVC levels (p0.000), but no significant difference in FEV1/FVC levels.
