Acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) is a clinical syndrome which is associated with an acutely coirsing glomerular inflammation. The typical triad of its presenting symptoms is macroscopic hematuria, hypertension and edema. In children, the most common cause of AGN is poststreptococcal glomerulonefritis. The evidence (Iif any) of previously experienced streptoccal infection, and serum complement level provide guidance for the differential diagnosis of AGN. In cases with typical APSGN there is no indication of kidney biopsy. The primary medical care of all patients is supportive, regardless of the etiology of AGN. Short termand long-term outcomes are generally favorable in children with APSGN Many clinical trials are currently proceeding for the development of both effective and safe vaccines against streptococcal infections.
