In the Ottoman State, with the initiation of the reformation movement in the eighteenth century, it was aimed to both keep up with the scientific developments that had gained momentum in Europe at that time, and to apply these novelties to the state institutions. Within this scope, in order to establish the teaching staff of the schools that had been newly founded in view of the European model, firstly it was resorted to the tutorship of European experts. Thereafter, with an aim to establish permanent academic staff for these schools, Turkish students were started to be sent to Europe to be trained. Veterinary students were also included among these students, who visited European countries for military, professional and technical training. The practice of sending doctors, who were graduates of the Civil Medical School, and students of the Military Veterinary School to Europe for veterinary medical education was continued in the following years by sending veterinarians to European countries for specialisation training in various branches of veterinary medicine. These veterinarians, who successfully completed their education, were either appointed as teaching staff at the veterinary schools or employed at various public institutions, upon their return to İstanbul. Many of these students made significant contributions to veterinary education as well as to occupational organisations and established the basis of the development of the academic fields of veterinary medicine in Turkey. This study both reveals new information gathered on veterinary students sent by the Ottoman State to Europe for training and provides an assessment of the implications of this practice in view of the history of veterinary medicine. Although there are limited number studies on general condition of veterinary education and its problems and solution offers of these problems in Turkey, any comprehensive studies in Turkey were not made. This study was carried out with the aim of determining veterinary education efficiency of veterinarians and veterinary faculty students and possible problems in education and the solutions of these problems. For this aim two questionnaires were developed for collecting data and one was applied to veterinary students and the other was applied to veterinary practitioners. The questionnaires applied by interviewing with 1176 participants individually in cities of seven geographical regions of Turkey that have a veterinary faculty. The data were analyzed: the efficiency of the education of veterinary faculties was evaluated as "low". While "the sufficiency of structure and duration" were accepted as the strong sides of education, the "insufficiency of practical training" was considered as the weakness. In conclusion, in accordance with the opinions of participants it can be said that the problems in veterinary education in Turkey can be solved by increasing practices and decreasing faculty number and student quota. Education of Veterinary Medicine at scientific sense in Turkey was started in 1842 by Godlewsky who came from Prussia. From this date until the end of 19th century, the appointment of foreign staff for education in the school, the increase in academical and professional contacts at international level within the field of veterinary medicine, and the efforts exerted to reflect the western scientific understanding upon the education caused Turkish to be influenced by foreign languages. Studies on adoption of Turkish as dominant language were started with Tanzimat, 1839 regulations; and the first serious step in this aspect was taken with the Revulation in Turkish alphabet in Republic era. Studies to adopt into Turkish were started on scientific terms; and within the time, Humane and Veterinary Medical fields were affected. Studies to adopt into Turkish in veterinary medicine processed in parallel with those in Medicine, and the progresses in both fields completed each other. Studies to adopt into Turkish in Veterinary Medicine were noticed in basic sciences like Anatomy, and it particularly turned into a systematical format within the structure of Higher Agriculture Institute. Purification and simplification studies on the terms, idioms and words of Humane and Veterinary Medicine at scientific sense has been continued for centuries despite all disadvantages that were confronted at different periods, and it is also continuing at present. The presentation of a new concept into the use of humanity from day to day in parallel to scientific developments in this era, could be considered as the continuation of studies to find out terms matching these concepts in the future., Türkiye'de bilimsel anlamda veteriner hekimliği eğitimi, 1842 yılında Prusya'dan getirilen Godlewsky tarafından başlatılmıştır. Bu tarihten 19'uncu yüzyılın sonuna kadar geçen sürede, Veteriner Hekimliği Okulunda yabancı öğretim elemanlarının aktif olarak görev alması, veteriner hekimliği alanında uluslar arası düzeyde akademik ve mesleki temasların artması ve batı bilim anlayışının eğitime yansıtılması gibi çabalar, Türkçenin yabancı dillerin etkisi altında kalmasına neden olmuştur. Tanzimat'la birlikte Türkçenin hakim dil durumuna getirilmesi yönünde çalışmalar başlatılmış bu yönde ilk büyük adım, Cumhuriyet Döneminde, Harf Devrimi ile atılmıştır. Türkçeleşme konusundaki çalışmalar bilimsel terimlerde başlatılmış; zamanla tip ve veteriner hekimliğinde kendini göstermiştir. Veteriner hekimliği alanında Türkçeleşme çalışmalan, tip alanındaki çalışmalarla büyük ölçüde paralellik göstermiş; her iki alandaki gelişmeler birbirini tamamlar bir nitelik kazanmıştır. Veteriner hekimliğinde Türkçeleşme çalışmaları, daha çok anatomi gibi temel bi limler alanında kendisini hissettirmiş; özellikle, Yüksek Ziraat Enstitüsü bünyesinde oldukça sistematik bir hal almıştır. Zaman zaman görülen olumsuzluklara karşın, tip ve veteriner hekimliğine ait terim, deyim ve sözcüklerde, bilimsel anlamda özleştirme ve sadeleştirme çabaları yüzyıllardan beri sürdürülmüş ve günümüzde de devam etmektedir. Kaldı ki, çağımızın bilimsel gelişmelerine paralel olarak, her geçen gün yeni bir kavramın insanlığın kullanımına sunuluşu. gelecekte de bu kavramları karşılayacak terimlerin bulunması için yapılacak çalışmaların devam edeceği şeklinde degerlendirilebilir.
