All rights reserved.Resveratrol is a chemical that attracts attention due to its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic/antiestrogenic properties. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate developmental and reproductive effects (developmental periods, average numbers of offspring, sex ratios) of resveratrol in Drosophila melanogaster. Their larvae were exposed to 50, 100, and 200 μM of resveratrol. Resveratrol treatments did not affect pupation and maturation rate (P > 0.05) statistically. But the pupation and maturation times were significantly extended at all doses (P < 0.05). Also, 100 and 200 μM resveratrol treatments resulted in a significant decrease in the number of offspring (P < 0.05). The results reveal that resveratrol, which is generally known for its positive effects, may have negative effects on the development and reproduction of invertebrates. The results of this study support the idea that resveratrol may act as an endocrine disruptor, as it is a phytoestrogen.

A permanent, ordered collection of 23,000 recombinant DNA plasmids containing Drosophila melanogaster DNA has been established. Simple and practical methods for storing and manipulating this collection were developed. In addition, an improved, simple and inexpensive method for making paper filter replicas of such an ordered collection and of a high density (10,000 colonies/petri dish) unordered collection was developed. These filter replicas are suitable for nucleic acid hybridization screens of recombinant DNA colinies and each filter replica can be used for many (greater than 5) successive screens. The kinetics of this hybridization reaction were examined and allow design of experiments that detect colony complementarity to a nucleic acid that is 0.5% of the hybridization probe.

PAPER-PARTITION chromatography of tissues of genetically known strains of Drosophila melanogaster as well as those of certain plants has shown that each strain gives a constant and distinctive pattern. The chromatographic patterns of heterozygotes carrying recessive genes can be easily distinguished from those of either parental homozygous strain, even though the phenotype of the heterozygote is indistinguishable from that of the homozygous dominant. This is the case for: (a) the fluorescent patterns observed under ultra-violet light in the chromatograms of adult Drosophila melanogaster heterozygous for the following mutants: bent, eyeless2, short-vein, spineless-aristapedia, vestigial; (b) the ultra-violet-fluorescent and the ninhydrin-positive patterns of root-tip smears of heterozygotes for the mutant male-sterile2 in tomato1; (c) the ultra-violet-fluorescent and the ninhydrin-positive patterns of root-tip smears and leaf extracts of heterozygotes for the yellow-green mutant of musk melon2 (see also chromatogram).
