Disentangling the interaction between the genetic basis and environmental context underlying phenotypic variation is critical for understanding organismal evolution. Environmental change, such as increased rates of urbanization, can induce shifts in phenotypic plasticity with some individuals adapting to city life while others are displaced. A key trait that can facilitate adaptation is the degree at which animals respond to stressors. This stress response, which includes elevation of baseline circulating concentrations of glucocorticoids, has a heritable component and exhibits intra- and inter-individual variation. However, the mechanisms behind this variability and whether they might be responsible for adaptation to different environments are not known. Variation in DNA methylation can be a potential mechanism that mediates environmental effects on the stress response, as early-life stressors increase glucocorticoid concentrations and change adult phenotype. We used an inter- and intra-environmental cross-foster experiment to analyse the contribution of DNA methylation to early-life phenotypic variation. We found that at hatching, urban house wren (Troglodytes aedon) offspring had higher methylation frequencies compared with their rural counterparts. We also observed age-related patterns in offspring methylation, indicating the developmental effects of the rearing environment on methylation. At fledgling, differential methylation analyses showed that cellular respiration genes were differentially methylated in broods of different origins and behavioural and metabolism genes were differentially methylated in broods of different rearing environments. Lastly, hyper-methylation of a single gene (CNTNAP2) is associated with decreased glucocorticoid levels and the rearing environment. These differential methylation patterns linked to a specific physiological phenotype suggest that DNA methylation may be a mechanism by which individuals adjust to novel environments during their lifespan. Characterizing genetic and environmental influences on methylation is critical for understanding the role of epigenetic mechanisms in evolutionary adaptation.

Alarm calls are usually used to signal the presence of a threat to members of the same species and have been studied broadly in social foraging species. We analysed the effects of conspecific alarm calls on the parental behaviour of a territorial species, the southern house wrens (Troglodytes aedon musculus), during nestling stage. We compared the parental response of adults feeding 9-11-day-old nestlings when faced with conspecific alarm calls and with a control non-sympatric species' song broadcast from a neighbouring territory. We measured the time required by parents to return to the nest (latency) when exposed to the stimuli and estimated parent's nest visitation rate and mean visit duration. Parents took longer to resume parental activities when we broadcast a conspecific alarm call, but they did not modify their nest visitation rate or the mean visit duration. Heterospecific songs did not seem to affect parental behaviour. Our results suggest that nesting southern house wrens can use alarm calls uttered from neighbouring territories to assess the presence of a threat and adjust their parental behaviour accordingly. I report on the unusual behavior of an adult House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) leading recently fledged young back to the nest for two consecutive nights. The ambient temperature reached below 0°C during both nights. Despite disadvantages associated with remaining in the nest, this observation suggests that adult birds may assess trade-offs between perceived risks versus the benefits of engaging in other activities, in this case roosting communally for thermoregulation.

Trade-offs in the allocation of finite resources among different stages of a breeding attempt as well as between different reproductive events should shape the evolution of life-history traits. To investigate the effects of incubation effort on within-brood and between-brood trade-offs in house wrens (Troglodytes aedon), we manipulated the clutch size that females incubated. We isolated effects of incubation by reversing the manipulation at hatching to allow all parents to provision their natural brood sizes. Females that incubated enlarged clutches had longer incubation periods than control females, both early and late in the season, suggesting that the experimental treatment increased incubation effort. Contrary to predictions, however, increased incubation effort did not adversely affect the allocation of effort to nestling provisioning. Rather, in the early season, but not in the late season, females that incubated enlarged clutches appeared to allocate more effort to nestling provisioning, producing heavier and larger fledglings than control females. Although females with enlarged early-season clutches consequently lost more mass than control females, this was likely an adaptive response to reduce wing loading in anticipation of high provisioning demands. There were no treatment-related differences in fledgling mass or size, or in female mass loss, in the late season. Thus, elevated incubation demands negatively affected a fitness-related trait (duration of incubation) that may constrain clutch size but not the allocation of resources to subsequent stages of the same breeding event or to subsequent breeding events. We suggest that environmental conditions may mediate clutch-size effects on trade-offs in allocation of resources between incubation and nestling provisioning. The number of mates, their fecundity, and the number of extra-pair fertilizations can all affect male reproductive success in biparental species. Extra-pair mating in birds has been of particular interest, because it could generate strong levels of sexual selection even when a species is socially monogamous. We examined how extra-pair fertilizations affect the opportunity for selection in the sexually dimorphic common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) and the sexually monomorphic house wren (Troglodytes aedon). We were able to identify sires for at least 95% of all nestlings, and, thus, we were able to make a nearly complete accounting of male reproductive success. Although extra-pair fertilizations were common in yellowthroats (26% of young) it contributed little (21%) to the total variance in male reproductive success. Most of the variance in reproductive success (58%) was attributable to the male’s within-pair success, which was influenced primarily by the number of young produced by each mate and the proportion of within-pair young sired. Despite a moderate level of extra-pair fertilizations (10% of young) in house wrens, almost all of the variance in male reproductive success (97%) was attributable to within-pair success, particularly the number of social mates. Although extra-pair fertilizations generally increase the variance in male reproductive success, withinpair reproductive success may be the major source of variation in male reproductive success. Thus, sexual dimorphism in monogamous birds may be influenced more by the number of mates and their fecundity than by extra-pair matings. Phenotypic traits are important for assessing differences between populations, especially in groups with poorly resolved taxonomy. One such group, the House Wren complex, presents extensive taxonomic controversy and is thought to comprise many independent evolutionary units. Although the songs and morphological features of House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) show extensive variation, differences between populations have not been quantified. We assessed variation in acoustic and morphometric traits within this complex and compared patterns of variation with currently recognized subspecies boundaries. First, we compared songs and morphology among eight recognized subspecies (T. a. aedon, T. a. parkmanii, T. a. cahooni, T. a. brunneicollis, T. a. nitidus, T. a. musculus, T. a. beani, and T. a. rufescens), controlling for significant effects of latitude. Second, we used variation in male song, a trait with an important role in mate choice and male–male competition, to assess divergence among subspecies. We compared variation among subspecies to variation across seven currently recognized Troglodytes species (T. hiemalis, T. pacificus, T. tanneri, T. sissonii, T. cobbi, T. rufociliatus, and T. ochraceus). Our results, based on broad sampling of songs (n¼786) and morphological traits (n ¼ 401) from 609 locations throughout the Americas, show that most of the subspecies examined diverge in song, morphology, or both. In addition, the acoustic differences between subspecies are similar to, and in some instances greater than, the divergence between pairs of currently recognized species. Our results suggest that at least four allopatric subspecies—T. a. nitidus, T. a. musculus, T. a. beani, and T. a. rufescens—are likely different species, and we identify many other vocally and morphologically differentiated subspecies that may, upon further detailed genetic analysis, result in new species.

Incubation periods of Neotropical birds are often longer than those of related species at temperate latitudes. We conducted a common-garden experiment to test the hypothesis that longer tropical incubation periods result from longer embryo development times rather than from different patterns of parental incubation behavior. House wrens, one of few species whose geographic range includes tropical equatorial and temperate high latitudes, have incubation periods averaging 1.2 days longer at tropical latitudes. We incubated eggs of house wrens in Illinois and Panama under identical conditions in mechanical incubators. Even after factoring out differences in egg size, tropical house wrens still required 1.33 days longer, on average, to hatch. We conclude that parental attendance patterns do not account for latitudinal differences in incubation period but that some other as yet unmeasured factor intrinsic to the egg or embryo, or both, extends development time in the tropics.

We examined the structure and characteristics of alarm calls uttered by nesting Southern House Wrens (Troglodytes musculus) during the 2007-2008 breeding seasons. We took multiple structural measures of 221 calls uttered by breeding individuals and used multivariate analyses to classify them. We recognized two distinctive alarm calls, named Type I and Type II. Type I calls were longer in duration and had higher frequencies than Type II calls; however, birds used Type II calls at a higher rate.
