Inhalation injuries can cause problems with diaphragmatic mobility and pulmonary function, which are accompanied by significant morbidity and mortality. No previous studies have determined the outcomes of acupoint transcutaneous electrical stimulation (Acu-TENS) in the treatment of inhalation burn injuries. The current study is therefore aimed at evaluating the influences of Acu-TENS on pulmonary functions and diaphragmatic mobility in adult-male patients experiencing after burn inhalation injury.This randomized controlled study was double blinded in an inpatient setting and was conducted between June 2018 and July 2019. Forty-male participants with inhalation-injury (20-40 yrs.) were randomly allocated into two study and control groups equal in numbers; the same pulmonary rehabilitation program plus early mobility exercise was conducted in both groups. The study group (group A) received additional Acu-TENS while shame Acu-TENS was carried out on the control group (group B). The intervention program continued for four weeks, three sessions a week for 45 min bilaterally on the bilateral Ding-Chuan points (Ex-B1). Spirometry was used to assess pulmonary functions, the 5-points-Likert scale was used to assess dyspnea, and ultrasonography was used to assess diaphragmatic mobility (DM), and evaluations were performed before and after interventions.At baseline assessment, no significant differences were detected between the two study groups (p˃0.05). In the post-interventional program, a noteworthy difference was detected in all outcome measures in the two study groups (p˂0.05), supporting group A. After 4 weeks of intervention, the mean (SD) for FVC, FEV1, and DM was 83.7 ± 4.34, 86.75 ± 4.59, and 5.93 ± 1.13 in group A, 79.65 ± 5.14, 83.1 ± 4.44, and 5.08 ± 1.15, in-group B. The mean difference for FVC, FEV1, and DM was 4.05 (1: 7.09), 3.65 (0.75: 6.54), and 0.85 (0.11: 1.57) between groups after treatment, respectively.Depending on the study findings, Acu-TENS on bilateral Ding-Chuan points could be considered an effective approach for improving pulmonary functions and diaphragmatic mobility in patients with inhalation injuries after thermal burn. Future studies with a larger sample size and longer duration on different types of burn injuries are recommended.

This work presents a data-driven method for identifying the potential core acupoint combination in COVID-19 treatment through mining the association rules from the retrieved scientific literature and guidelines for prevention and treatment of COVID-19 published all over China. It is based on the representation of the acupoint data in a binary form, the use of a novel association rule mining algorithm properly tailored for discovering the relationship of acupoint groups among combinations of different descriptions. The proposed method is applied to the real database of acupoint descriptions collected from published literature and guidelines. The obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Neural systems play important roles in the functions of acupuncture. But the unclear structure and mechanism of acupoints hinder acupuncture standardization and cause the acupuncture effects to be varying or even paradoxical. It has been broadly assumed that the efficacy of acupuncture depends on the biological signals triggered at acupoints and passed up along neural systems. However, as the first station to transmit such signals, the characters of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons innervating acupoints are still not well elucidated. We adopted Zusanli (ST36) as a representative acupoint and found most DRG neurons innervating ST36 acupoint are middle-size neurons with a single spike firing pattern. This suggests that proprioceptive neurons take on greater possibility than small size nociceptive neurons do to mediate the acupuncture signals. Moreover, we found that adenosine injected into ST36 acupoints could dose- and acupoint-dependently mimic the analgesic effect of acupuncture. However, adenosine could not elicit action potentials in the acutely isolated ST36 DRG neurons, but it inhibited IsubD/subcurrents and increased the areas of overshoots. Further, we found that 4 types of adenosine receptors were all expressed by ST36 DRG neurons, and A1, A2b, and A3 receptors were the principal reactors to adenosine. PERSPECTIVE: This study provides the major characteristics of ST36 DRG neurons, which will help to analyze the neural pathway of acupuncture signals. At the same time, these findings could provide a new possible therapy for pain relief, such as injecting adenosine or corresponding agonists into acupoints.

The sinew channels are a tendon and muscle network, and their description is based on the observation presented on the Huangdi Neijing Ling Shu. However, the myofascial system is an uninterrupted series of connective tissue that is comprised of layers that run in different directions. The similarities on these pathways are compared, such as a brief description on the myofascial pain syndrome and its similitude with the Impediment disorder from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Furthermore, we discuss the treatment of these conditions from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective.

We aim to investigate the effects and mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) at ST25 and ST37 on the intestinal low-grade inflammation (LGI) in rat model of Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D).IBS-D model rats were established by acetic acid enema combined with restraint and tail clamping. Before EA intervention, they were divided into three groups: blank 1 group, blank 2 group, and IBS-D model group. Diarrhea symptoms and visceral pain sensitivity were evaluated. After constructed the model successfully, the remaining IBS-D model group rats were randomly divided into model group and EA group. Local intestinal inflammation (HE staining), changes of intestinal mucosa (occludin protein and microvascular diameter) were evaluated. Differences between two groups were compared using t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test. Differences among more than two groups were compared using one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test.After modeling, the results of HE staining in intestinal tract of IBS-D model rats showed LGI. Compared with the model group, 4 h fecal moisture content (diarrhea index) and the AWR score were decreased in the EA group. The results of HE in EA group showed that the infiltration of intestinal inflammatory cells were alleviated. Additionally, EA significantly upregulated the expression of occludin protein and partially dilated the intestinal microvascular diameter. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the symptoms of IBS-D rats were correlated with the changes of intestinal mucosa.EA may treat intestinal LGI in IBS-D rats by upregulating the expression of occludin protein and dilating the intestinal microvascular diameter.

Acupuncture can regulate the functions of human body and improve the cognition of brain. However, the mechanism of acupuncture manipulations remains unclear. Here, we hypothesis that the frontal cortex plays a gating role in information routing of brain network under acupuncture. To that end, the gating effect of frontal cortex under acupuncture is analyzed in combination with EEG data of acupuncture at Zusanli acupoints. In addition, recurrent neural network (RNN) is used to reproduce the dynamics of frontal cortex under normal state and acupuncture state. From low-dimensional view, it is shown that the brain networks under acupuncture state can show stable attractor cycle dynamics, which may explain the regulation effect of acupuncture. Comparing with different manipulations, we find that the attractor of low-dimensional trajectory varies under different frequencies of acupuncture. Besides, a strip gated band of neural dynamics is found by changing the frequency of stimulation and excitatory-inhibitory balance of network. This reverse engineering of brain network indicates that the differences among acupuncture manipulations are caused by interaction and separation in the neural activity space between attractors that encode acupuncture function. Consequently, our results may provide help for quantitative analysis of acupuncture, and benefit for the clinical guidance of acupuncture clinicians.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease. Acupuncture and moxibustion is proved effective in treating UC, but the mechanism has not been clarified. Proteomic technology has revealed a variety of biological markers related to immunity and inflammation in UC, which provide new insights and directions for the study of mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of UC.To investigate the mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) and herb-partitioned moxibustion (HM) on UC rats by using proteomics technology.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the normal (N) group, the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC model (M) group, the HM group, and the EA group. UC rat model was prepared with 3% DSS, and HM and EA interventions at the bilateral Tianshu and Qihai acupoints were performed in HM or EA group. Haematoxylin and eosin staining was used for morphological evaluation of colon tissues. Isotope-labeled relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry were performed for proteome analysis of the colon tissues, followed by bioinformatics analysis and protein-protein interaction networks establishment of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between groups. Then western blot was used for verification of selected DEPs.The macroscopic colon injury scores and histopathology scores in the HM and EA groups were significantly decreased compared to the rats in the M group (EA and HM could regulate the expression of ATP5L, Atp5f1, Cox4i1 that associated with oxidative phosphorylation, then might regulate immune-related pathways of intestinal immune network for IgA production, FcγR-mediated phagocytosis, thereby alleviating colonic inflammation of DSS-induced UC rats.

Objective. To study the mechanism of acupuncture on premature ovarian failure (POF) through the apoptosis pathway mediated by Bcl-2/Bax. Methods. POF rats were successfully obtained by cyclophosphamide. They were divided into five groups. After that, acupuncture was performed. The blank group and model group were not treated. The routine acupuncture group was acupuncture at Guanyuan, Sanyinjiao, Zhongji, and Guilai four points. The Neck-seven-acupuncture group was selected from Fengchi, Fengfu, Tianzhu, and Wangu four acupoints; the three-viscera simultaneous treatment group selected Guanyuan, Shenshu, Sanyinjiao, Taichong, and Baihui five points; and the data mining group selected Guanyuan and Sanyinjiao two points for 14 days of treatment. During the treatment, some rats were shed one after another due to the side effects of bone marrow suppression caused by mold-making. After treatment, serum estradiol (E2), follicle forming hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were detected by radioimmunoassay, Bcl-2 and Bax proteins were analyzed by Western blot method, and Bcl-2 and Bax RNA were analyzed by PCR method. Results. Bcl-2 increased and Bax decreased in rats with premature ovarian failure treated with acupuncture. It shows that acupuncture can affect the secretion of ovarian-related hormones and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, which is more significant in the conventional acupuncture point group. Conclusion. Acupuncture can inhibit the apoptosis of granulosa cells in ovarian tissue of rats with premature ovarian failure and improve ovarian function. The mechanism of its effect is to promote Bcl-2 gene expression and protein synthesis and inhibit Bax gene expression and protein synthesis. The conventional treatment group works best. This provides an experimental basis for the clinical use of acupuncture to intervene in the treatment of premature ovarian failure.

Objective. The present study is aimed at investigating the biochemical and clinical effects of electroacupuncture in patients with sepsis. Methods. Patients with sepsis treated at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine from July 2019 to December 2020 were included. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with routine Western medicine (WM group) or treatment with Western medicine plus electroacupuncture based on Western medicine (EA group). Indices associated with immune function and clinical efficacy were determined before and at 3 and 5 days after treatment. Indicators of immune function included the percentage of T lymphocyte subsets, natural killer (NK) cells, and soluble programmed death protein 1 (sPD-1) levels. Indicators of clinical efficacy included infection-related indicators in whole blood; levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interferon-γ (INF-γ); and assessments using acute physiology and chronic health evaluation-II (APACHE-II) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores. Results. Baseline data were not different between WM ( N = 30 ) and EA groups ( N = 30 ). At day 5 following treatment, the level of sPD-1 in the EA group was lower than that in the WM group. Proportions of CD3 + T lymphocytes, CD4 + T lymphocytes, and NK cells, the percentage of lymphocytes, and INF-γ levels in the EA group were significantly higher than those in the WM group. Compared with the WM group, the white blood cell count (WBC), percentage and count of neutrophils, ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes, and levels of CRP and TNF-α were significantly decreased in the EA group 5 days after treatment. The APACHE-II score of the EA group was significantly lower than that of the WM group 5 days after treatment. Conclusion. Electroacupuncture may regulate the immune function of patients with sepsis through the PD-1 pathway to achieve an anti-inflammatory state and improve clinical symptoms.

The authors investigated the effectiveness of home-based transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) combined with lifestyle modification on blood pressure (BP) control and explored the feasibility of the trial design in this prospective, randomized controlled trial. The authors recruited individuals with high-normal BP who had a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 120-139 mm Hg and a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 80-89 mm Hg, or both. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either lifestyle modification combined with TEAS four times weekly for 12 weeks at home (intervention group) or solely lifestyle modification (control group). The primary outcome was the change in mean SBP at week 12 from the baseline measurement. A total of 60 participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio, and an intention-to-treat analysis was performed on all of the outcomes. The mean difference in the change in SBP for the intervention group (compared to the control) at week 12 was -3.85 mm Hg (95% CI: -7.58 to -.12; p = .043); for the DBP, the change was -2.27 mm Hg (95% CI: -5.76 to 1.23; p = .199). There was no difference in the proportion of progression to hypertension, quality of life, body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. In addition, two participants reported TEAS-related adverse events. The authors found a reduction in SBP control in the pragmatic, home-based intervention by using TEAS combined with lifestyle modification in adults with high-normal BP. Trial Registration: The study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR 1900024982) on August 6, 2019.

Acupoint stimulation has proven to be of significant importance for rehabilitation and preventive therapy. Moxibustion, a kind of acupoint therapy, has mainly been performed by practitioners relying on manual localization and positioning of acupoints, leading to variance in the accuracy owing to human error. Developments in the automatic detection of acupoints using deep learning techniques have proven to somewhat tackle the problem. But the current methods lack depth-based localization and are thus confined to two-dimensional (2D) localization. In this research, a new approach towards 3D acupoint localization is introduced, based on a fusion of RGB and depth convolutional neural networks (CNN) to guide the manipulator. This research aims to tackle the challenge of real-time 3D acupoint localization in order to provide guidance for robot-controlled moxibustion. In the first step, the 3D sensor (Kinect v1) is calibrated and transformation matrix is computed to project the depth data into the RGB domain. Secondly, a fusion of RGB-CNN and depth-CNN is employed, in order to obtain 3D localization. Lastly, 3D coordinates are fed to the manipulator to perform artificially controlled moxibustion therapy. Furthermore, a 3D acupoint dataset consisting of RGB and depth images of hands, is constructed to train, validate and test the network. The network was able to localize 5 sets of acupoints with an average localization error of less than 0.09. Further experiments prove the efficacy of the approach and lay grounds for development of automatic moxibustion robots.

This study aimed to develop expert fuzzy logic model to assist physicians in the prediction of postoperative complications of prostatic hyperplasia before surgery.A method for classification of surgical risks was developed. The effect of rotation of the current-voltage characteristics at biologically active points (acupuncture points) was used for the formation of classifier descriptors. The effect determined reversible and non-reversible changes in electrical resistance at acupuncture points with periodic exposure to a sawtooth probe current. Then, the developed method was tested on the prediction of the success of surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.Input descriptors were obtained from collected data including current-voltage characteristics of 5 acupuncture points and composed of 27 arrays feeding in the model. The maximum diagnostic sensitivity of the classifier for the success of a surgical operation in the control sample was 88% and for testing data set prediction accuracy was 97%.The use of tuples of current-voltage characteristic descriptors of acupuncture points in the classifiers could be used to predict the success of surgical treatment with satisfactory accuracy. The model can be a valuable tool to support physicians' diagnosis.

Objective. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) in treating post-operative pain. Methods. This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021286753). We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about TEAS in treating postoperative pain that were published before November 2021. The primary outcome was visual analogue scale (VAS) within 24 h after surgery. The secondary outcomes included postoperative opioid analgesic drug consumption and the occurrence of adverse reactions within the postoperative 24–72 h. Adverse reactions included dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Continuous variables were analyzed using mean difference (MDs) or standardized mean difference (SMDs) and 95% CIs. Relative risk (RR) and 95% CI were used for dichotomous data. The data were pooled and analyzed by RevMan 5.4 and STATA15.0 software. Results. Seventeen trials with 1375 participants were included. The current results suggested that application of TEAS showed obvious superiority in reducing VAS scores (SMD = −1.51, 95% CI = −2.20∼−0.82, I2 = 96%). Subgroup analysis was performed according to open surgery and minimally invasive surgery. VAS scores were decreased after surgery at 24 h (SMD = −0.84, 95% CI = −1.07∼−0.6, I2 = 96%; SMD = −0.88, 95% CI = −1.02∼−0.75, I2 = 96%). The incidence of postoperative dizziness and nausea and vomiting was significantly lower in the TEAS group within postoperative 24–72 h (RR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.34∼0.68, I2 = 0%; RR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.44∼1.01, I2 = 69%; and RR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.24∼1.00, I2 = 51%). Postoperative opioid analgesics were also reduced in the TEAS group within 72 h after surgery (SMD = −2.10, 95% CI = −3.37∼−0.82, I2 = 96%). Conclusions. TEAS can reduce postoperative pain as well as the incidence of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting and the number of analgesics used after surgery. TEAS is a reasonable modality to incorporate into a multimodal management approach for postoperative pain.

To explore the impact of nano-microsphere loaded with dexmedetomidine (DEX) combined with percutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation on the postoperative cognitive function of elderly patients with hip fracture. The free base was prepared by the alkali precipitation method in this research, and then the drug was loaded into PLGA microspheres to construct the drug sustained-release system. The PLAG microspheres loaded with DEX (MS/DEX) were prepared by the O/W emulsion volatilization method and then Gel-(DEX-MS/BUP) suspension was obtained. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the characterization of the prepared drug-loaded nano-microsphere, rheological analysis was performed on the copolymer solution, and in vivo release and degradation, experiments were carried out. Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=ten). After the sciatic nerve block model was established, the block time was observed after the injection of each sustained-release agent. The results showed that the gel-forming temperature of Gel and Gel-(DEX-MS/BUP) were 27.3°C and 26.3°C, respectively. Both MS/BUP and Gel-(DEX-MS/BUP) drugs could completely enter the blocking state. There was no loss of motor function in the rats after GEL-DEX. The clinical trials showed that Gel-(DEX-MS/BUP) system had good in situ and sustained release effects, and the analgesic effect of local anesthesia was significantly improved.

The term Jingluo, translated as meridian or channel, is a core component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has played a fundamental role in guiding the clinical practice of acupuncture for thousands of years. However, the essence of the meridian remains elusive and is a source of both confusion and debate for researchers. In this study, a “4D” systemic view on the essence of the meridian, namely substantial, functional, chronological, and cultural dimensions, was proposed based on a review of the ancient medical classics, recent research developments, and results from clinical practice. Previous studies have primarily focused on the substantial dimension of the meridian system, with scant interpretation about its functional domain. Neither systemic data nor evaluations have been adequately documented. Additionally, a limited but increasing number of studies have focused on the chronological and cultural dimensions. More investigations that embody the holistic concept of TCM and integrate the systemic modes and advanced techniques with dominant diseases of TCM need to be performed to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the essence of meridians. The goal of this study is to yield useful information in understanding the essence of meridians and provide a reference and perspective for further research.

Is Primo Vascular System (PVS) a paradox? Finding the connection between PVS as a carrier of information and the body's reactions at the micro and macro levels will be the starting point in understanding the meaning of life as such.The initial phase of medicine in all cultures is reduced to the transfer of specific energy by special pathways throughout the body! This is the case in China, India, Japan, Korea, Tibet, etc. Undoubtedly, the five articles by B. H. Kim published in the early 1960s are considered to be the past of PVS.PVS studies after 2002 are accepted as a present. Most of the articles on the topic are in journals with editors-in-chief originating and/or accepting the achievements of Eastern medicine. Is the science of PVS local since its research is in journals that publish mainly articles on Eastern medicine? Why few of the articles concerning PVS are in Western medicine journals?All substances, objects, biological objects generate a weak electromagnetic radiation typical for each of them which is a passport of the information. PVS has all the data to be the main carrier of information. Information medicine and Quantum Biology can serve as a basis for medicine and biomedical sciences, and it should explain the processes that exist for the change of DNA and organisms in.

We published a meta-analysis of studies that examined the various components of an evidence-based therapy called emotional freedom techniques (EFTs). EFT uses elements of conventional therapies such as exposure and cognitive processing but includes the unique ingredient of acupoint stimulation using fingertip tapping. Six studies were identified, and three of these met the quality control criteria of the American Psychological Association's Division 12 Task Force for Empirically Validated Therapies. Meta-analysis found that the acupoint component of EFT was not an inert ingredient or inactive placebo but made an active contribution to the therapeutic effects noted in a research literature that now numbers over 100 clinical trials of EFT. Subsequent to publication, errors in the original analysis were identified, primarily incorrect standard deviations. A new analysis was performed by an independent statistician and found slightly greater effects than the original investigation. The results were published as a corrigendum, which was subsequently challenged by Spielmans. Here we examine the critiques of the corrigendum and original article. We find that although they may be of academic interest, they are irrelevant to the central research question of whether the acupoint component of EFT is inert or active. We reaffirm that the evidence clearly validates the contribution made by acupoint tapping to EFT's observed clinical effects.

In China, 45% of stroke patients suffer from poststroke shoulder pain, which brings about many obstacles to further rehabilitation. To date, there have been a few studies evaluating the effects of acupuncture or massage in treating poststroke shoulder pain, and good effects have been shown. However, better clinical treatments are still needed.To explore a more effective treatment for poststroke shoulder pain, the clinical effects of moxibustion plus acupuncture were assessed.Sixty patients were randomly divided into the control and intervention groups. The control group received a standard stroke treatment protocol including acupuncture, and the intervention group was given moxibustion combined with acupuncture. The visual analogue scale (VAS), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Fugl-Meyer motor assessment, Barthel Index, and 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) were applied, and differences were analyzed.After 4 weeks of treatment, compared with the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significant improvement in Fugl-Meyer motor assessment and HAMD-17 (both p0.01) as well as in the VAS, NIHSS, and Barthel Index (all p0.05).Moxibustion plus acupuncture treatment can alleviate poststroke shoulder pain, improve upper limb motor function and the ability to perform activities of daily living, and relieve patients' depression.Hintergrund: In China leiden 45% der Schlaganfallpatienten an Schulterschmerzen nach dem Schlaganfall, wodurch die weitere Rehabilitation erheblich erschwert wird. Die Auswirkungen von Akupunktur oder Massage auf die Behandlung von Schulterschmerzen nach einem Schlaganfall wurden bislang in einigen wenigen Studien untersucht, und es waren positive Effekte zu beobachten. Dennoch sind auch weiterhin bessere klinische Behandlungen erforderlich. Ziel: Die klinischen Effekte von Moxibustion in Kombination mit Akupunktur wurden be­wertet, um eine wirksamere Behandlung von Schulterschmerzen nach einem Schlaganfall zu erforschen. Methoden: Sechzig Patienten wurden randomisiert einer Kontroll- und einer Interventionsgruppe zugewiesen. Die Kontrollgruppe erhielt eine Behandlung nach dem Standard-Behandlungsprotokoll für Schlaganfall einschließlich Akupunktur, und die Interventionsgruppe wurde mit Moxibustion in Kombination mit Akupunktur behandelt. Zur Anwendung kamen die visuelle Analog­skala (VAS), die National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), das Fugl-Meyer-Assessment der Motorik, der Barthel-Index sowie die Hamilton Depression Scale mit 17 Items (HAMD-17), und die Unterschiede wurden analy­siert. Ergebnisse: Nach vier Behandlungswochen zeigte die Interventionsgruppe im Vergleich zur Kontrollgruppe eine signifikante Verbesserung im Fugl-Meyer-Assessment der Motorik und in der HAMD-17 (beide p0,01) sowie in der VAS, NIHSS und im Barthel-Index (alle p0,05). Schlussfolgerung: Moxibustion in Kombination mit einer Akupunkturbehandlung kann Schulterschmerzen nach einem Schlaganfall lindern, die motorische Funktion der oberen Extremitäten und die Fähigkeit, Alltagsakti­vitäten zu verrichten, verbessern sowie die Depression der Patienten mildern.

A growing body of evidence supports the use of perioperative acupuncture as part of an enhanced postsurgical recovery protocol. Data from both clinical trials and animal studies has shown that the integration of acupuncture into perioperative patient care leads to a reduction of perioperative complications such as preoperative anxiety, intraoperative hemodynamic instability, postoperative pain, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, and postoperative nausea and vomiting in surgical patients. Despite these favorable outcomes, perioperative acupuncture has yet to be widely adopted in current anesthesia practice. This review summarized data from clinical perioperative acupuncture studies and cites recent discoveries regarding the anatomical location and characteristics of acupoint(s), acupuncture stimulation techniques, and treatment practice protocols, as well as identified the areas of deficiency in perioperative acupuncture applications. To facilitate acupuncture integration in perioperative care practice, the authors propose to establish a perioperative acupuncture registry which can be used for data mining as well as a resource for studying the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture. Through this acupuncture registry, clinical guidelines and research protocols can be established, additional large/multi-center clinical and pragmatic trials can be easily performed to determine if the integration and expansion of perioperative acupuncture practice is cost-effective.

Background : : Cupping therapy is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain. Objectives: The study assessed the effects of dry cupping on pain and functional disability from persistent nonspecific low back pain. Methods : : This was a randomized controlled trial, where participants were allocated to a cupping therapy (n = 19) or sham (n = 18) group, for five 10-minute sessions of cupping therapy, twice a week, to stimulate the acupoints related to low back pain (GV4, BL23, BL24, BL25, and BL30, BL40 and BL58) and emotional aspects (HT3 and ST36). All participants were assessed at baseline, post-treatment and follow up (a finalization period of four weeks) using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Groups were compared using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and the effect size was calculated using Cohen̓s d. Results : : The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean VAS when compared to the sham, at post-treatment (mean difference: -2.36; standard error [SE]: 0.58; p < 0.001; “large” effect size: -0.94) and follow up (mean difference: -1.71; SE: 0.81; p < 0.042; ‘large’ effect size: -0.83). The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean ODI when compared to the sham post-treatment (mean difference: -4.68; SE: 1.85; p: 0.017; ‘large’ effect size: -0.87), although in follow-up, there was no difference between the groups (mean difference: 4.16; SE: 2.97; p: 0.17; “medium” effect size: -0.70). Conclusion : : Dry cupping was more effective in improving pain and functional disability in people with persistent nonspecific low back pain when compared to the sham.

Objective. This study aimed at investigating the effects of wrist-ankle acupuncture-moxibustion and hot compression with Chinese herbal medicine on pain symptoms, endothelin-1 (ET-1), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) concentrations of patients with cervical radiculopathy (CR). Methods. A total of 82 patients with CR were randomly divided into the study group and control group, with 41 cases in each group. The control group was treated with standard treatment. In addition to standard treatment, the study group was additionally treated with wrist-ankle acupuncture-moxibustion and hot compression with Chinese herbal medicine. The ET-1 and CGRP concentrations in the plasma were measured by the radioimmunoassay method. Results. The total response rate in the study group and the control group was 97.55% and 82.93%, respectively. The study group showed lower scores of the visual analogue scale (VAS), Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ), McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ), numbness intensity assessment, and neck disability index (NDI) but higher scores of the Short Form-36 (SF-36) health survey questionnaire than the control group after treatment. Besides, the study group exhibited reduced ET-1 and substance P (SP) concentrations concomitant with increased CGRP and β-endorphin (β-EP) concentrations compared with the control group. Conclusion. Wrist-ankle acupuncture-moxibustion and hot compression with Chinese herbal medicine could effectively alleviate the pain of CR patients, affect ET-1 and CGRP concentrations, promote the recovery of cervical function, and improve the quality of life.

Objective: Asthma is a highly prevalent respiratory disease that remains difficult to control. Acupuncture, as an important alternative therapeutic modality in preventing and treating asthma, is widely used in the world due to its promising efficacy and safety. Although acupoint selection and combinations are critical to therapeutic effects of acupuncture, its fundamental rules for asthma have not been fully understood. Thus, using data mining, the present study aimed to discover the most effective acupoints and combinations in the acupuncture treatment of asthma. Methods: Controlled clinical trials (CCTs) of acupuncture treatment for asthma were searched and retrieved from databases including Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and PubMed. Data regarding the main acupoints prescribed in these clinical trials was collected and quantified. A network analysis was performed to uncover the interconnections between the acupoints. Additionally, hierarchical clustering analysis and association rule mining were conducted to discover the potential acupoint combinations. Results: A total of 183 CCTs were retrieved. Feishu (BL13), Dingchuan (EX-B1), Dazhui (GV14), Shengshu (BL23), Pishu (BL20), and Fengmen (BL12) appeared to be the most frequently used acupoints for asthma. While the Bladder Meridian of Foot Taiyang, the Governor Vessel, and the Conception Vessel, compared to other meridians, were found to be the more commonly selected meridians. In the acupoint interconnection network, Feishu (BL13), Fengmen (BL12), Dingchuan (EX-B1), and Dazhui (GV14) were defined as key node acupoints. Moreover, acupoint clustering analysis revealed the treatment principle of “facilitating the flow of the lung Qi, tonifying spleen and kidney, and treating both the symptoms and root causes.” Association rule mining analysis demonstrated that the combination of Pishu, Shenshu, Feishu, and Dingchuan, as well as that of Feishu, Dazhui, and Fengmen were potential acupoint combinations that should be selected with priority in asthma treatment. Conclusion: Based on a data mining analysis of published CCTs, this study provides valuable information regarding the selection of the most effective acupoints and combinations for clinical acupuncture practice and experimental study aimed at the prevention and treatment of asthma.

Postoperative paralytic ileus prolongs hospitalization duration, increases medical expenses, and is even associated with postoperative mortality; however, effective prevention of postoperative paralytic ileus is not yet available. This trial aimed to assess the preventative effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation applied in the lower limbs on postoperative paralytic ileus incidence after colorectal surgery.After ethics approval and written informed consent, 610 patients from 10 hospitals who were scheduled for colorectal surgery between May 2018 and September 2019 were enrolled. Patients were randomly allocated into the transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (stimulated on bilateral Zusanli, Shangjuxu, and Sanyinjiao acupoints in lower limbs for 30 minutes each time, total 4 times) or sham (without currents delivered) group with 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was postoperative paralytic ileus incidence, defined as no flatus for72 hours after surgery.Compared to the sham treatment, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation lowered the postoperative paralytic ileus incidence by 8.7% (32.3% vs 41.0%, P = .026) and decreased the risk of postoperative paralytic ileus by 32% (OR, 0.68; P = .029). Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation also shortened the recovery time to flatus, defecation, normal diet, and bowel sounds. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation treatment significantly increased median serum acetylcholine by 55% (P = .007) and interleukin-10 by 88% (P.001), but decreased interleukin-6 by 47% (P.001) and inducible nitric oxide synthase by 42% (P = .002) at 72 hours postoperatively.Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation attenuated the postoperative paralytic ileus incidence and enhanced gastrointestinal functional recovery, which may be associated with increasing parasympathetic nerve tone and its anti-inflammatory actions.

This study aims to explore the anti-asthma components and mechanism of Kechuanting acupoint application therapy(KAAT) based on serum metabolomics and network pharmacology. A total of 60 asthma patients who had used low-dose inhaled corticosteroids-formoterol(ICS-formoterol) for a long time were randomized into the western medicine group(low-dose ICS-formoterol) and western medicine+Kechuanting group(KAAT+low-dose ICS-Formoterol), 30 in either group. In addition, 30 healthy people were included as the control(no intervention). The asthma control test(ACT) score, forced expiratory volume in 1 second(FEV1), and peak expiratory flow(PEF) were measured in the western medicine group and western medicine+Kechuanting group before and after treatment. The potential biomarkers of KAAT in the treatment of asthma were screened by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with multivariate analysis, and the related metabolic pathways were further analyzed. UPLC/LTQ-Orbitrap-MS, together with network pharmacology, was employed to construct the component-target-pathway network. Thereby, the effective components and me-chanism of KAAT in the treatment of asthma were clarified. According to the ACT score, FEV1, and PEF, KAAT was effective in the treatment of asthma. A total of 10 endogenous biomarkers of KAAT in the treatment of asthma were screened by serum metabolomics, and the pathways of the metabolism of glycine, serine and threonine, and the metabolism of glyoxylic acid and dicarboxylic acid were obtained. UPLC/LTQ-Orbitrap-MS identified 51 chemical components of KAAT: 24 flavonoids, 11 alkaloids, 8 phenols, 2 diterpenoids, 2 triterpenoids, 2 glycosides, and 2 aldehydes. Network pharmacology analysis suggested that KAAT mainly acted on serum crea-tinine(SRC), matrix metalloproteinase 9(MMP-9), and other target proteins. The treatment was closely related to metabolic pathway, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-protein kinase B(PI3 K-Akt), mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK), and calcium signaling pathway. Sinapine thiocyanate, corydaline, dihydroberberine, stylopine, leonticine, N-methyl tetrahydroberberine, kaempferide, erio-dictyol, quercetin, catechin, 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, ingenol, and luteolin may be potential effective compounds of KAAT in the treatment of asthma. This study preliminarily revealed that the effective components and mechanism of KAAT in treatment of asthma based on serum metabolomics and network pharmacology. It lays a theoretical foundation for in-depth study of the mechanism and clinical development and application.

The treatment of acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) effective and safe for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) is not yet known. This systematic review will objectively and systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of ACE in CLBP according to the existing evidence.The protocol of this systematic review and meta-analyses has been registered in PROSPERO with the registration number CRD42019142256. The following electronic databases from inception to November 29, 2022 will be searched: PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang Data and Chinese Science Journal Database. Randomised controlled clinical(RCTs) using ACE to treat CLBP will be included. Outcomes will include pain intensity, instrument with assessment function and disability, quality-of-life, and costs. Adverse events will be reported for safety assessment. By screening the titles, abstracts, and full texts, two independent reviewers will select studies, extract data, and assess study quality. Data synthesis, sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis and risk of bias assessment will be conducted using RevmanV.5.3 software. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system will be used to assess the quality ofthe evidence.The efficacy and safety of ACE in the treatment of CLBP has not yet been determined.This systematic review will objectively and systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of ACE in CLBP according to the existing evidence, which can give high level clinical recommendations to improve patient care and clinical outcomes.

To evaluate the efficacy of multiple acupoint combinations for the treatment of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) using a network meta-analysis method.Searches for clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of various types of acupuncture treatments for post-stroke cognitive dysfunction were conducted, data were extracted from studies selected according to the inclusion criteria, and the RCTs included in the analysis were assessed separately for risk of literature bias. Network meta-analysis was performed using Stata 14.0.Sixteen RCTs involving 1257 patients were included, which involved 9 groups of acupoint treatment plans. The best treatment plan for improving the mini-mental state examination score of PSCI was a cephalic plexus spur (99.7%). The best treatment option for improving the montreal cognitive assessment score for PSCI was Zishen Yisui acupuncture therapy (ZSYSA) (77.3%). The best option for improving the barthel index score of PSCI was ZSYSA (99.2%). In terms of improving the overall clinical outcomes of PSCI, the best treatment option for improving the overall clinical effectiveness of PSCI is ZSYSA Therapy (92.2%).The analysis of all results shows that ZSYSA can significantly improve PSCI compared to other acupuncture therapies.This is the 1st study on the treatment of PSCI with different acupoint combinations based on a network meta-analysis method, which provides a reference for clinical rehabilitation workers; all included studies were randomized controlled trials, which increased the reliability of this study. Limitations; The number of relevant clinical studies retrieved was too small, and all included clinical trials were located in China; therefore, there is a great possibility of publication bias; Most of the included studies did not clearly explain the random distribution mode, follow-up, distribution concealment, or other experimental conditions. Therefore, selection and reporting biases cannot be excluded, suggesting that the quality of the literature is not high; Because of the strict inclusion criteria, the number of studies was limited, and subgroup analysis could not be performed according to the time of onset and the length of the disease course.

To observe the clinical efficacy of shallow-needle therapy combined with estazolam on insomnia differentiated as liver stagnation transforming into fire and its effect on adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol (CORT), so as to explore the mechanism of this combined treatment.A total of 119 patients with insomnia of liver stagnation transforming into fire pattern were randomly divided into shallow-needle therapy group (In within-group comparison, PSQI scores, SAS scores and the concentrations of ACTH and CORT in plasma were all decreased (Shallow-needle therapy combined with estazolam is effective on insomnia of liver stagnation transforming into fire pattern, and its underlying effect mechanism is related to the reduction of plasma ACTH and CORT levels.

The "meridian" is the core concept of acupuncture medicine. It can be said that almost all the theories and clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion in traditional Chinese medicine are based on this concept. However, up to now, scientists have failed in finding the "meridian" described in Chinese classic textbooks and fall into the dilemma of the meridian essence research. In fact, the meridian is independent of currently known anatomical tissues. Nevertheless, researches obtained highly valuable outcomes of life science through long-term studies, especially the cerebral science endowed the meridian theory with new connotations. The modern meridian theory is composed of new knowledge and traditional meridian knowledge. The aim of this study is to see if microcurrent electrical stimulation on two acupoints, auricular and Hegus, can help patients prevent their gag reflex.This was an in vivo cross-sectional study.Thirty patients were randomly assigned to three groups: A, B, or C, of ten patients present in each group. Group A and Group B undergone electroacupuncture (microcurrent electrical stimulation) using electroacupuncture device on auricular point and Hegus point (Li 4), respectively, for 1 min and Group C formed the placebo group, point Shou San Li (Li 10). The gag severity index and the gag prevention index were used to measure the gag reflex, which was done in two steps.SPSS (SPSS Inc., Chicago IL, USA) version 24 software was used for statistical analysis. Paired t-test, one-way analysis of variance test, post hoc Bonferroni test was used to analyse and compare the data.It was found that Point A and Point B were significantly effective in reducing the severity of gag reflex. Point C demonstrated insignificant results. In addition, Point B (Hegus [Li4]) is more effective than Point A (auricular) in controlling the gag reflex in patients within the set age group of 20-70 years of age.Microcurrent electrical stimulation is a useful adjuvant in the treatment of unfavorable gag reflexes during routine dental procedures. Point Hegus and point auricular acupuncture are both useful in decreasing the severity of gag reflex, with point Hegus being more effective than point auricular.

Although anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory measures have delayed the progression of ulcerative colitis (UC) to a certain extent, the adverse drug reactions and recurrence after recovery still trouble clinicians. Acupoint catgut embedding is a possible alternative strategy for the treatment of UC, but its clinical efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this study systematically evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of acupoint catgut embedding compared with conventional western medicine in the treatment of UC.VIP, Wanfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library databases were searched. And the publication time of the literature was limited from the time that the database was established to February 2022. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias as required. Meta-analysis was performed with Revman 5.3. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was performed with TSA 0.9.5.10 Beta. Publication bias was assessed by Stata 15.0. And evidence quality was appraised with GRADEpro3.6.A total of 10 studies were listed, with a total sample size of 782 cases. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional western medicine, acupoint catgut embedding can effectively improve the total effective rate of clinical symptoms (relative risk [RR] = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.09,1.24], P .00001), endoscopic total effective rate (RR = 1.16, 95%CI = [1.08,1.25], P .0001), clinical symptom cure rate (RR = 1.80, 95%CI = [1.37,2.38], P .0001), and endoscopic cure rate (RR = 1.97, 95%CI = [1.36,2.86], P = .0004) of UC, but the adverse event rate (RR = 0.20, 95%CI = [0.01,4.00], P = .29) was similar. Trial sequential analysis indicated that the efficacy endpoint was conclusive. Harbord test confirmed no significant publication bias. The quality of evidence for these outcomes ranges from low to medium.The clinical efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding in the treatment of UC is superior to that of conventional western medicine, and the safety may be equivalent to that of conventional western medicine, which has the value of further research and exploration.

Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (PGD) leading to nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distension are common complications after laparoscopic surgery for abdominal diseases. However, drugs cannot completely stop PGD. Over the years, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) therapy has shown potential in preventing PGD, but there is no medical evidence that TEAS represents the best choice for the treatment of PGD. This network meta-analysis sought to evaluate the effectiveness of TEAS therapy in preventing PGD in patients after abdominal laparoscopic surgery.Articles (published from the establishment of the databases to July 2021) were retrieved from the following databases: PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China Technical Journal VIP Database (CQVIP), China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and the Wanfang Database. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies, and a network meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.20.A total of 7 randomized controlled trials, comprising 440 TEAS-treated patients and 468 control patients, were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the TEAS treatment group and the control group in relation to postoperative nausea and vomiting [relative risk (RR) =0.66; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37-1.21; P=0.18], postoperative abdominal distension (RR =0.53; 95% CI: 0.40-0.72; P0.0001), the time of first postoperative fart (imply gastrointestinal motility) [mean difference (MD) =-7.31; 95% CI: -11.33 to -3.30; P=0.0004], and the time of first postoperative bowel movement (MD =-5.28; 95% CI: -7.23 to -3.33; P0.0001); there were significant differences among these 3 indicators.We found that TEAS can promote postoperative fart and bowel movement, and has good clinical value in promoting postoperative gastrointestinal function recovery.

Background : : Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) improves autonomic balance and reduces oxidative stress in subjects with chronic diseases, that decreases the risk of low-grade chronic inflammatory diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. However, these beneficial effects have never been demonstrated in healthy subjects. Objectives: To evaluate the acute effects of TEAS on autonomic balance and oxidative stress of healthy subjects. Methods : : A randomized clinical trial was conducted with male healthy subjects (18-30 years old), randomly allocated to control (no intervention; n = 14), placebo (placebo intervention; n = 14) and TEAS group (at PC5 and PC6 acupoints; n = 13). The protocol consisted of accommodation (20 min), intervention (40 min), and recovery (30 min) periods. The acute effects of TEAS on hemodynamics were studied through measurements of heart rate, blood pressure and double product; on the autonomic nervous system by assessing heart rate variability; and on oxidative stress by quantifying reactive oxygen species in saliva samples, collected at the end of each period. Results : : TEAS increased heart rate and double-product compared to control and placebo groups (p < 0.01). Moreover, TEAS increased sympathetic and reduced parasympathetic tonus, increasing the sympathovagal balance compared to the control and placebo groups. However, TEAS exerted no effect on oxidative stress in saliva samples. Conclusion : : In healthy subjects, TEAS at PC5 and PC6 acupoints acutely improved autonomic balance, increasing sympathetic and reducing parasympathetic tonus, reflecting little improvement on hemodynamic responses. Whether it could be used as a cardioprotective strategy remains uncertain since it exerted no effect on oxidative stress.

Somatosensory autonomic reflexes allow electroacupuncture stimulation (ES) to modulate body physiology at distant sites1–6 (for example, suppressing severe systemic inflammation6–9). Since the 1970s, an emerging organizational rule about these reflexes has been the presence of body-region specificity1–6. For example, ES at the hindlimb ST36 acupoint but not the abdominal ST25 acupoint can drive the vagal–adrenal anti-inflammatory axis in mice10,11. The neuroanatomical basis of this somatotopic organization is, however, unknown. Here we show that PROKR2Cre-marked sensory neurons, which innervate the deep hindlimb fascia (for example, the periosteum) but not abdominal fascia (for example, the peritoneum), are crucial for driving the vagal–adrenal axis. Low-intensity ES at the ST36 site in mice with ablated PROKR2Cre-marked sensory neurons failed to activate hindbrain vagal efferent neurons or to drive catecholamine release from adrenal glands. As a result, ES no longer suppressed systemic inflammation induced by bacterial endotoxins. By contrast, spinal sympathetic reflexes evoked by high-intensity ES at both ST25 and ST36 sites were unaffected. We also show that optogenetic stimulation of PROKR2Cre-marked nerve terminals through the ST36 site is sufficient to drive the vagal–adrenal axis but not sympathetic reflexes. Furthermore, the distribution patterns of PROKR2Cre nerve fibres can retrospectively predict body regions at which low-intensity ES will or will not effectively produce anti-inflammatory effects. Our studies provide a neuroanatomical basis for the selectivity and specificity of acupoints in driving specific autonomic pathways. Neuroanatomical findings demonstrate why electroactupuncture at only specific acupoints can drive the vagal–adrenal axis and treat inflammation in mice.

Moxibustion is a traditional East Asian medicine treatment that involves burning moxa directly or indirectly on or near the skin at a specific site of the body, called an acupoint. However, whether moxibustion induces cardiovascular responses by modulating autonomic nervous activity remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of indirect moxibustion on cardiovascular responses and autonomic nervous activity. Fifteen healthy volunteers participated in the study. Each subject received regional heat stimulation by indirect moxibustion at the lower leg acupoint. Heart rate, RR intervals, blood pressure and skin temperature were measured continuously for 3 min at rest and 5 min during indirect moxibustion. Local skin temperature increased reaching a peak (45.3 ± 3.3 °C) at 2 min after moxibustion was started, and was accompanied by a significant decrease in heart rate (63.0 ± 7.8 to 60.8 ± 7.8 bpm, p

Acupoint is the initial response site of acupuncture stimulus and also the source link of the effect onset of acupuncture. Acupuncture is a mechanical physical stimulus. How is the mechanical force of acupuncture transduced into neuroelectrical and biochemical signals at acupoint? How does the physiochemical information of acupoint launch acupuncture effect? All of these remain the common and crucial questions in the study of acupuncture effect mechanism. Physical changes are induced in the local tissue of acupoint by needling techniques, such as the deformation and displacement of muscle fibers, which may act on the nerve ending receptors and produce electroneurographic signals. Besides, these changes may activate the mechanosensitive ion channels of the cytomembrane in acupoint site. Through cellular signal transduction, the physical signals may be transformed into chemical ones to trigger the physiochemical coupling response of acupoint microenvironment. To observe the efficacy of acupuncture on symptom burden in patients with gastric cancer during adjuvant chemotherapy after gastrectomy.A total of 58 patients were randomized into a high-dose acupuncture group (19 cases, 5 cases dropped off), a low-dose acupuncture group (20 cases, 6 cases dropped off) and a control group (19 cases, 2 cases dropped off). Conventional chemotherapy and antiemetic treatment were adopted in the control group. Using the complex network technology, the characteristics of the core acupoint prescriptions and the application of acupuncture-moxibustion techniques were analyzed in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) so as to provide the evidences for acupoint selection and therapeutic methods for RA treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. The articles of acupuncture and moxibustion for treatment of RA in recent 20 years were collated and imported, and the database of the acupoint prescriptions was developed. Using Cytoscape 3.9.2 software, the acupoints in the prescriptions were visualized for the common occurrence network analysis. The association rule analysis was performed with IBM SPSS Modeler 18.0 software and the complex network analysis was by Gephi 0.9.2 software. A total of 798 articles were screened, in which, 3 258 prescriptions were extracted with 253 acupoints involved. The analysis of acupoint selection was conducted in terms of syndrome/pattern differentiation, acupoint locations and main acupoints, and therapeutic methods. OBJECTIVE: To use evidence-based medicine to explore the efficacy of acupoint application (AA) for allergic rhinitis (AR) at different time points and its safety. METHODS: We searched 7 databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and China Biology Medicine disc) as well as the international clinical trial registration platform from January 2010 to March 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of AA versus placebo, Western Medicine or other alternative therapies on AR. Risk of bias was assessed according to the Cochrane handbook, and statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. Outcomes included the total effective rate, recurrence rate, total nasal symptom score (TNSS), visual analogue scale (VAS), quality of life measured by the Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) or Short Form-36 (SF-36), adverse events, and biomarkers including immunoglobulin E (IgE), peripheral blood eosinophil count (EOS), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interferon gamma (INF-γ). RESULTS: Twenty-eight RCTs involving 3282 participants were included. The short-term and long-term efficacy of AA was significantly better than placebo, including better total effective rate [RR: 3.05, 95%CI (1.84, 5.07), after treatment; RR: 9.29, 95%CI (2.57, 33.66), at 6 months], lower recurrence rate [RR: 0.55, 95%CI (0.45, 0.66), at 6 months; RR: 0.65, 95%CI (0.57, 0.74), at 1 year], lower TNSS [MD: –3.09, 95%CI (–3.58, –2.61), after treatment], and lower RQLQ [MD: –14.79, 95%CI (–21.49, –8.10), after treatment; MD: –11.92, 95%CI (–17.40, –6.45), at 4-6 months]. Compared with Western Medicine, AA had better long-term total effective rate [RR: 1.33, 95%CI (1.05, 1.69), at 3 months; RR: 1.49, 95%CI 1.22 to 1.81, at 1 year) and lower recurrence rate [RR: 0.48, 95%CI (0.39, 0.58), at 6 months; RR: 0.45, 95%CI (0.33, 0.60), at 1 year]. AA had better long-term total effective rate versus acupuncture [RR: 2.06, 95% CI (1.28, 3.31), at 1 year] or oral Chinese medicine [RR: 1.21, 95% CI (1.09, 1.34), ≥ 6 months]. Both AA and Western Medicine can reduce serum levels of IgE, EOS, and IL-4 after treatment. The main adverse event of AA was local skin reaction without systemic side effects. CONCLUSIONS: The short-term (within one month) and long-term (at 3 months, 6 months and 1 year) efficacy of acupoint application on AR was better than that of placebo. The long-term efficacy of acupoint application was superior to that of Western Medicine (at 3 months, 6 months and 1 year), oral Chinese medicine (at more than 6 months) and acupuncture (at 1 year). AA can reduce serum IgE, EOS, and IL-4 level of AR patients in a short run. Acupoint application is safe, but severe skin reactions can reduce patient compliance.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and analyze the effect of acupuncture and acupoint catgut embedding in treatment of abdominal obesity to provide a more reasonable clinical treatment regimen. METHODS: Ten databases were searched as of August 2022: the English databases PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wiley, and Scopus and the Chinese databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang, and SinoMed/Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture and acupoint catgut embedding as the main interventions to treat abdominal obesity were extracted. The investigators imported the citations into EndNote version X9.1 for deduplication, screening, extraction, and integration. The risk of bias in the included RCTs was assessed according to the Cochrane Handbook. RevMan 5.4 software was used to conduct a Meta-analysis of RCTs that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Thirteen RCTs (1069 patients) were included in this study, and the data of eleven RCTs (966 patients) were include in the Meta-analysis. The results showed that acupoint catgut embedding can significantly change the weight and waist circumference of patients with abdominal obesity when compared to sham acupuncture or no treatment [mean difference (MD) = 2.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.88, 2.76), P < 0.000 01], [MD = 3.47, 95% CI (1.99, 4.94), P < 0.000 01]. The change in hip circumference after acupuncture was also significant [MD = 0.89, 95% CI (0.12, 1.66), P = 0.02]. CONCLUSION: This study found that acupuncture and acupoint catgut embedding can effectively treat abdominal obesity, therefore, these interventions can be used as clinical supplements and alternative therapies. The diagnostic criteria of the existing studies and the intervention measures of the control group are not unified. It will be necessary to improve the clinical study protocols and expand the sample size to further validate the reliability of the results obtained of this study.

IntroductionThe most frequent complications after abdominal surgery include a decrease or loss of appetite, abdominal distension, abdominal pain caused by reduced gastrointestinal motility, anal arrest with intestinal distension and defecation, and nausea and vomiting due to anesthetic and opioid analgesic administration. These complications severely affect postoperative recovery, prolong hospital stay, and increase the financial burden. The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of three acupoint stimulation modalities (electroacupuncture [EA], transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation [TEAS], and transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation combined with EA [TEAS+EA]), and two EA instrument waveforms (continuous wave and dilatational wave) for rapid recovery after abdominal surgery.Methods and analysisA total of 560 patients will be recruited and randomly allocated to receive one of the following seven interventions: continuous wave EA, continuous wave TEAS, continuous wave TEAS + EA, dilatational wave EA, dilatational wave TEAS, dilatational wave TEAS + EA, and a control. For this study, continuous waves at 2 Hz, and dilatational waves at 2/50 Hz would be selected. The points to be stimulated by EA are the bilateral Neiguan (PC6), Hegu (LI6), Zusanli (ST36), Shangjuxu (ST37), and Xiajuxu (ST39), and TEAS would stimulate the bilateral Liangmen (ST21) and Daheng (SP15). The control group will neither receive EA nor TEAS. All patients will undergo an enhanced recovery plan after surgery and be provided with standardized perioperative management. Treatment will start on the first postoperative day and be administered once daily in the morning until the patient regains spontaneous bowel movements and can tolerate oral intake of solid food. The primary outcome is a composite of time to first defecation and time to tolerance of a solid diet. Background Lumbar disc herniation is seen in 5–15% of patients with lumbar back pain and is the most common spine disorder demanding surgical correction. Spinal surgery is one of the most effective management for these patients. However, current surgical techniques still present complications such as chronic pain in 10–40% of all patients who underwent lumbar surgery, which has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. Research studies have shown that transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) may reduce the cumulative dosage of intraoperative anesthetics as well as postoperative pain medications in these patients. Objective To investigate the effect of pTEAS on pain management and clinical outcome in major spinal surgery patients. Methods We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind study to verify the effect of pTEAS in improving pain management and clinical outcome after major spinal surgery. Patients (n = 90) who underwent posterior lumbar fusion surgery were randomized into two groups: pTEAS, (n = 45) and Control (n = 45). The pTEAS group received stimulation on acupoints Zusanli (ST.36), Sanyinjiao (SP.6), Taichong (LR.3), and Neiguan (PC.6). The Control group received the same electrode placement but with no electrical output. Postoperative pain scores, intraoperative outcome, perioperative hemodynamics, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and dizziness were recorded. As a major public health problem, insomnia has garnered much attention. Acupuncture, with dialectical acupoint selection (DAS), has been proved to be effective for insomnia, but there is no evidence of evidence-based medicine to prove the efficacy of Lingguibafa acupoint selection (LAS) for insomnia. This study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture with LAS in patient with insomnia.The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Weipu Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, Chinese Biomedical Database, and Wanfang Database were systematically searched from the inception dates to December 18, 2021. Randomized controlled trials of acupuncture with LAS versus acupuncture with DAS or acupuncture with LAS plus DAS versus acupuncture with DAS in patient with insomnia were included. Two review authors independently performed the data extraction and assessed study quality. A meta-analysis was performed using random-effects models to calculate relative risk and weighted mean difference for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. The primary efficacy outcome was improvement on Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Secondary outcomes included insomnia severity index, Epworth sleepiness scale, Hamilton anxiety scale, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), and total effective rate.A total of 7 trials with 468 patients fulfilled the selection criteria. The pooled results indicated that acupuncture with LAS plus DAS could reduce PSQI score by 2.08 (1.60 after excluding heterogeneity) compared to acupuncture with DAS. Acupuncture with LAS plus DAS had high reliability in sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep time and daytime function, but showed no significant effect on sleep disorder and hypnotic drug. For total effective rate, acupuncture with LAS plus DAS or acupuncture with LAS was better than acupuncture with DAS, but the conclusion was less credible.Acupuncture with LAS is significantly associated with improvements in several sleep parameters, primarily evident on the PSQI score. Nevertheless, considering the poor methodological quality, trials employing appropriate randomization concealment and blinding based on a larger sample size are needed in the future.
