We have performed Compton scattering measurements on as-grown and reduced single crystals of the electron-doped T'-cuprate Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4 (x = 0.10) to investigate the effect of reduction annealing on the electronic state. The obtained results have revealed that the numbers of electrons in the O2p orbital in the Zhang-Rice singlet band, the Cu3dx2-y2 orbital, and the Cu3d3z2-r2 orbital are increased by reduction annealing. The increase in the number of Cu3d3z2-r2 electrons suggests the existence of Cu3d3z2-r2 holes in the as-grown single crystal. This is spectroscopic evidence of local hole doping into the Cu3d3z2-r2 orbital around the excess oxygen, as suggested by transport measurements [T. Adachi et al., J. Phys. Soc. The on-site Coulomb potential, U, and the covalent state of electronic orbitals play key roles for the Cooper pair symmetry and exotic electromagnetic properties of high-Tc superconducting cuprates. In this paper, we demonstrate a way to determine the value of U and present the whole picture of the covalent state of Cu spins in the mother system of the La-based high-Tc superconducting cuprate, La2CuO4, by combining the muon spin rotation ({\mu}SR) and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. We reveal local deformations of the CuO6 octahedron followed by changes in Cu-spin distributions caused by the injected muon. Adjusting the DFT and muSR results, U and the minimum charge-transfer energy between the upper Hubbard band and the O 2p band were optimized to be 4.87(4) and 1.24(1) eV, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures see https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.4.033044

We performed neutron powder diffraction measurements on the as-sintered (AS) and oxygen-reduced (OR) La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_{4+��-��}$ (LECO). The structural parameters for oxygens in AS and OR samples refined by the Rietveld analysis are almost identical to those of the reference system, Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4+��-��}$. Thus, the two systems are comparable in terms of the structural changes in oxygens due to the annealing, although superconductivity appears only in LECO., 2 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

SH3TC2, known as the causative gene of autosomal recessive demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4C (CMT4C), was also found linked to a mild mononeuropathy of the median nerve with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Using DNA microarray, Illumina MiSeq, and Ion proton, we carried out gene panel sequencing among 1483 Japanese CMT patients, containing 397 patients with demyelinating CMT. From seven patients with demyelinating CMT, we identified eight recessive variants in the SH3TC2 gene, consisting of five novel (pathogenic/likely pathogenic) and three reported variants. Additionally, from two patients with axonal CMT, we detected a reported recessive variant, p.Arg77Trp, which was herein reclassified as variant with unknown significance. Of the seven CMT4C patients (six females and one male), 2/7 patients developed symptoms at their first decade, and 5/7 patients lost their ambulation around age 50. Scoliosis was observed from more than half (4/7) of these patients, whereas hearing loss is the most common symptom of central nervous system (6/7). No median nerve mononeuropathy was recorded from their family members. We identified recessive variants in SH3TC2 from 1.76% of demyelinating CMT patients. An uncommon gender difference was recognized and the wild spectrum of these variants suggests mutational diversity of SH3TC2 in Japan.

We demonstrate the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the superconducting and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, using (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ (Bi-2201) single crystals. Magnetization curves exhibit a tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures in the heavily overdoped crystals, which is probably a precursor phenomenon of a FM transition at a lower temperature. Muon spin relaxation detects the enhancement of spin fluctuations at high temperatures below 200 K. Correspondingly, the ab-plane resistivity follows a 4/3 power law in a wide temperature range, which is characteristic of metals with two-dimensional FM fluctuations due to itinerant electrons. As the Wilson ratio evidences the enhancement of spin fluctuations with hole doping in the heavily overdoped regime, it is concluded that two-dimensional FM fluctuations reside in the heavily overdoped Bi-2201 cuprates, which is probably related to the decrease in the superconducting transition temperature in the heavily overdoped cuprates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the first observation of superconductivity in heterostructure consisting of an insulating ferroelectric film (Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$) grown on an insulating parent compound of La$_2$CuO$_4$ with [001] orientation. The heterostructure was prepared by magnetron sputtering on a non-atomically-flat surface with inhomogeneities of the order of 1-2 nm. The measured superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ is about 30K. We have shown that superconductivity is confined near the interface region. Application of a weak magnetic field perpendicular to the interface leads to the appearance of the finite resistance. That confirms the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the superconductive state. The proposed concept promises ferroelectrically controlled interface superconductivity which offers the possibility of novel design of electronic devices., Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. In order to investigate the relationship between the so-called stripe correlations and the high-Tc superconductivity, we have carried out magnetic susceptibility and zero-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements in partially Fe-substituted La2-xSrxCu1-yFeyO4 (LSCFO). It has been found that the Fe substitution induces successive magnetic transitions in the overdoped regime, namely, a spin-glass transition of Fe3+ spins due to the RKKY interaction based on itinerant spins at higher temperatures and a stripe-order transition of localized Cu2+ spins at lower temperatures. The stripe-order transition disappears at the hole concentration of ~0.28 per Cu which coincides with the endpoint of the superconductivity in pristine La2-xSrxCuO4, suggesting that the stripe correlations are closely related to the high-Tc superconductivity in the overdoped regime as well as in the underdoped regime. As for the spin-glass state, it has been found that the contribution of polarized itinerant spins to the muon-spin depolarization is not negligible. Taking into account neutron-scattering results by R.-H. He et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 127002 (2011)] that a spin-density-wave (SDW) order has been observed in overdoped LSCFO, the present results demonstrate the presence of a novel coexistent state of a SDW order and a spin-glass state., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Longitudinal-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements have revealed inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field at temperatures above the bulk superconducting (SC) transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, in slightly overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_{8+��}$. The distribution width of the internal magnetic field, $��$, evolves continuously with decreasing temperature toward $T_{\rm c}$.
