In this work, we present new data on the $^{182,183,184}$W($γ,n$) cross sections, utilizing a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Further, we have extracted the nuclear level density and $γ$-ray strength function of $^{186}$W from data on the $^{186}$W($α,α^\primeγ$)$^{186}$W reaction measured at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. Combining previous measurements on the $^{186}$W($γ,n$) cross section with our new $^{182,183,184}$W($γ,n$) and ($α,α^\primeγ$)$^{186}$W data sets, we have deduced the $^{186}$W $γ$-ray strength function in the range of $1 < E_γ< 6$ MeV and $7 < E_γ< 14$ MeV. Our data are used to extract the level density and $γ$-ray strength functions needed as input to the nuclear-reaction code \textsf{TALYS}, providing an indirect, experimental constraint for the $^{185}$W($n,γ$)$^{186}$W cross section and reaction rate. Compared to the recommended Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) in the KADoNiS-1.0 data base, our results are on average lower for the relevant energy range $k_B T \in [5,100]$ keV, and we provide a smaller uncertainty for the MACS. The theoretical values of Bao \textit{et al.} and the cross section experimentally constrained on photoneutron data of Sonnabend \textit{et al.} are significantly higher than our result. The lower value by Mohr \textit{et al.} is in very good agreement with our deduced MACS. Our new results could have implications for the $s$-process and in particular the predicted $s$-process production of $^{186,187}$Os nuclei., 17 pages, 15 figures; to be submitted to Phys. Rev. C

The experimental gamma-ray strength functions (gamma-SFs) of 142,144-151Nd have been studied for gamma-ray energies up to the neutron separation energy. The results represent a unique set of gamma-SFs for an isotopic chain with increasing nuclear deformation. The data reveal how the low-energy enhancement, the scissors mode and the pygmy dipole resonance evolve with nuclear deformation and mass number. The data indicate that the mechanisms behind the low-energy enhancement and the scissors mode are decoupled from each other., 14 pages and 10 figures

Understanding the evolution of level densities in the crossover from spherical to well-deformed nuclei has been a long-standing problem in nuclear physics. We measure nuclear level densities for a chain of neodymium isotopes Nd-142,Nd-144-151 which exhibit such a crossover. These results represent the most complete data set of nuclear level densities to date for an isotopic chain between neutron shell-closure and towards mid-shell. We observe a strong increase of the level densities along the chain with an overall increase by a factor of approximate to 150at an excitation energy of 6 MeV and saturation around mass 150. Level densities calculated by the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) are in excellent agreement with these experimental results. Based on our experimental and theoretical findings, we offer an explanation of the observed mass dependence of the level densities in terms of the intrinsic single-particle level density and the collective enhancement. The majority of patients with pancreatic cancer is of advanced disease. Several randomized Phase II and III trials suggest that the combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin (GemCis) response rates were higher than Gemcitabine (Gem) alone, however the trials were not enough powered to indicate a statistically significant prolongation of survival in patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The aim of this retrospective multicenter study is to evaluated the efficiency of Gem alone versus GemCis in patients with locally advanced and/or metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma .A total of 406 patients, from fourteen centers were evaluated retrospectively. All patients received Gem or GemCis as first-line treatment between September 2005 to March 2011. Primary end of this study were to evaluate the toxicity, clinical response rate, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between the arms. There were 156 patients (M: 98, F: 58) in Gem arm and 250 patients (M: 175, F: 75) in the combination arm. Gemcitabin arm patients older than the combination arm ( median 63 vs 57.5, p=0.001). In patients with the combination arm had a higher dose reduction (25.2% vs 11.3%, p=0.001) and dose delay (34% vs 16.8%, p=0.001). Among patients with the combination and Gemcitabin arm gender, diabetes mellitus, performance status, cholestasis, grade, stage did not have a statistically difference (p0.05). Clinical response rate to the combination arm was higher than the Gem arm (69.0% vs 49.7%, p=0.001). PFS was more favorable in the GemCis arm than Gem alone, but the difference did not attain statistical significance (8.9 vs 6.0, p=0.08). OS was not significantly superior in the GemCis arm (12.0 vs 10.2, p0.05). Grade III-IV hematologic and nonhematologic toxicity were higher in the combination arm. PFS was more favorable in the GemCis arm than Gem alone, but the difference did not attain statistical significance. OS was not significantly superior in the GemCis arm.

Nuclear level densities for $^{56,57}$Fe have been extracted from the primary $\gamma$-ray spectra using ($^3$He,$^3$He$^{\prime}\gamma$) and ($^3$He,$\alpha \gamma$) reactions. Nuclear thermodynamic properties for $^{56}$Fe and $^{57}$Fe are investigated using the experimental level densities. These properties include entropy, Helmholtz free energy, caloric curves, chemical potential, and heat capacity. In particular, the breaking of Cooper pairs and single-quasiparticle entropy are discussed and shown to be important concepts for describing nuclear level density. Microscopic model calculations are performed for level densities of $^{56,57}$Fe. The experimental and calculated level densities are compared. The average number of broken Cooper pairs and the parity distribution are extracted as a function of excitation energy for $^{56,57}$Fe from the model calculations., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

The two published literature values [Greenwood et al., Nucl. Phys. A252, 260 (1975) and Gelletly et al., J. Phys. G 11, 1055 (1985)] for absolute primary gamma intensities following thermal neutron capture of 171Yb differ in average by a factor of three. We have resolved this conflict in favor of Greenwood et al. by a measurement of primary versus secondary intensities., Comment: two pages including one figure

The $^{55}$Mn$(d,n)^{56}$Fe differential cross section is measured at $E_d=7$ MeV\@. The $^{56}$Fe level density obtained from neutron evaporation spectra is compared to the level density extracted from the $^{57}$Fe$(^3$He,$����)^{56}$Fe reaction by the Oslo-type technique. Good agreement is found between the level densities determined by the two methods. With the level density function obtained from the neutron evaporation spectra, the $^{56}$Fe $��$-strength function is also determined from the first-generation $��$ matrix of the Oslo experiment. The good agreement between the past and present results for the $��$-strength function supports the validity of both methods and is consistent with the low-energy enhancement of the $��$ strength below $\sim 4$ MeV first discovered by the Oslo method in iron and molybdenum isotopes., 7 pages, 5 figures
