The study was set out to establish how curriculum design influences teacher educators’ digital competence at Makerere University. It was hypothesized that, curriculum design influences teacher-educators’ digital competence. A case study design was employed taking a quantitative approach. Participants were teacher trainers from School of Education and data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product moment Correlation coefficient. Results indicated that, curriculum design and development has got a significant positive influence to teacher educators’ technology knowledge and skills. It was concluded that; any curriculum that does not include technology knowledge and skills is not aimed at addressing the needs of the 21st century learners, whom we refer to as digital natives and therefore all institutions must take ICT integration as a fundamental component of today’s teaching and learning. And it was recommended that; The School of Education should develop an evaluative instrument to regularly assess the extent to teacher trainers in all departments implement technology knowledge and skills in teaching and learning process.

A case study design was employed taking a quantitative approach. Objectives of the study were to establish how individual and institutional values influence teacher educators’ technology knowledge and skills at Makerere University. Participants were teacher trainers from School of Education and data were collected using a self administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using; ANOVA, Pearson Product moment Correlation coefficient and Regression. It was found out that: both individual and institutional values have got a significant positive influence to teacher educators’ technology knowledge and skills. It was concluded that; individual values in form of: level of education, teaching experience, attitude or belief and disciplinary background are very fundamental in promoting teacher educators’ technology skills and knowledge; institutional values in form of: leadership styles, policy guidelines, curriculum and structural facilities are critical aspects in promoting teacher educators’ technology knowledge and skills. It was recommended that The School of Education should develop an evaluative instrument to regularly assess the extent to which ICTs have promoted teaching and learning, University administrators should change their leadership styles, adopt transformational leadership style according because results indicated that it promotes teacher educators’ technology knowledge and skills

This study investigated the effect of Lecturers' Competence on the Quality of University graduates in Uganda. The study used both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data from key university stakeholders. The study found a significant positive correlation between Lecturers' Competence and the quality of university graduates in Uganda.

Although eye-tracking technologies such as Tobii-T120/TX and Eye-Tribe are steadily becoming ubiquitous, and while their appropriation in education can aid teachers to collect robust information on how students move their eyes when reading and engaging with different learning objects, many teachers of Luganda language are yet to gain experiences of utilizing these technologies in their teaching. This paper emerges from a semester-long (17 weeks) study which followed a Design Based Research (DBR) approach and deployed qualitative techniques to cultivate the experiences of 68 Luganda language teacher-trainees in utilizing different emerging Educational Technologies (ETs) in their teaching. The study was guided by Kolb (1984)’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) and Reeves (2006)’s model of conducting research in authentic e-learning contexts. During the study, trainees concretely experienced, abstractly conceptualized and made observational reflections about their own active experimentations of different ETs in teaching Luganda language. In this paper, we describe how we supported the trainees to conduct an active experimentation of Tobii-T120 to track how students moved their eyes when reading and engaging with learning objects on an emulated smart phone. Following the observational reflections, which the trainees made about their active experimentation, this paper also presents a discourse analysis thereof.

In an attempt to match the pace of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and Education for All, the focus of this chapter is language-in-education policies in Africa where countries are characterized by the multiplicity of ethnic groupings and languages spoken. This chapter reviews the sundry perspectives, practices, and implications for social, economic, and national development—but specifically personal cognitive and educational development. Arguments and counter-arguments for language-in-education policies are premised on the colonial backdrop of foreign language institutionalization as well as the best practices for bilingual and multilingual settings. There is a potential adverse impact on the African child’s learning when the teaching-learning process is in an unfamiliar language; yet, the former colonial masters’ languages still hold high prestige in African societies. We conclude that there is a need to invest and strengthen the teaching of second languages so that African children acquire the functional proficiency to enable them to better use these languages with facility. However, we also recommend that high-quality teaching of second languages should be done alongside the development of indigenous languages so that children can learn through languages that they understand better.
