Difficulty in multi-component self-assembly under thermodynamic control arises from increasing the number of possible isomers with similar thermodynamic stabilities. Past efforts on multi-component self-assembly of metal-organic cages have mainly focused on finding a suitable combination of building blocks to lead to a single multi-component self-assembly as the thermodynamically most stable product. Here, we present another approach to selectively produce multi-component Pd(II)-based self-assemblies under kinetic control based on the selective ligand exchanges of weak Pd–L coordination bonds retaining the original orientation of the metal centers in a kinetically stabilized cyclic structure and on local reversibility given in a certain area of the energy landscape in the presence of the assist molecule that facilitates error correction of coordination bonds. The kinetic approach enabled us to build all six types of Pd2L4 cages and heteroleptic tetranuclear cages composed of three kinds of ditopic ligands. Though the cage complexes thus obtained are metastable, they are stable for 1 month or more at room temperature.

Self-assembled coordination squares consisting of cis-protected dinuclear Rh(II) corner complexes and linear ditopic ligands were selectively produced in solution under kinetic control with the assistance of a weak monotopic carboxylate ligand (2,6-dichlorobenzoate: dcb–) as a leaving ligand. Preventing the cyclization step in the triangular formation by the leaving ligand enabled to produce the molecular square only. It was also found that dcb– can selectively convert the triangular complex into the square complex at room temperature, though heating at 373 K for 2 days is needed for the conversion without dcb– and that DMSO blocked the transformation process with dcb–. These results indicate that the energy landscape of the Rh(II)-based molecular self-assembly can be modulated properly by monotopic carboxylate ligand and solvent so that the self-assembly proceeds under kinetic control. Furthermore, one of the molecular squares assembled into a dimeric structure by the solvophobic effect, whose structure was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

UV-C irradiation increases resveratrol content in grape skins, but it reaches a maximum at a certain UV-C dose. In contrast, UV-B has a weak resveratrol-enhancing effect at low doses, but it has not been investigated at high doses. In this study, we investigated the effect of high-dose UV-B on resveratrol contents in grape skins. Irradiation of Muscat Bailey A with 290 nm UV-B LED at 22 500 and 225 000 µmol m−2 increased the resveratrol contents in the grape skins by 2.1- and 9.0-fold, respectively, without significant increases in other phenolic compounds. The effect was also confirmed for 2 other cultivars: Shine Muscat and Delaware. Transcriptome analysis of the grape skins of Muscat Bailey A immediately after irradiation with UV-B at 225 000 µmol m−2 showed that genes related to biotic and abiotic stresses were upregulated. Hence, it was suggested that high-dose UV-B irradiation induces a stress response and specifically activates resveratrol biosynthesis.

Root parasitic weeds of the Orobanchaceae, such as witchweeds (Striga spp.) and broomrapes (Orobanche and Phelipanche spp.), cause serious losses in agriculture worldwide, and efforts have been made to control these parasitic weeds. Understanding the characteristic physiological processes in the life cycle of root parasitic weeds is particularly important to identify specific targets for growth modulators. In our previous study, planteose metabolism was revealed to be activated soon after the perception of strigolactones in germinating seeds of O. minor. Nojirimycin inhibited planteose metabolism and impeded seed germination of O. minor, indicating a possible target for root parasitic weed control. In the present study, we investigated the distribution of planteose in dry seeds of O. minor by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–mass spectrometry imaging. Planteose was detected in tissues surrounding—but not within—the embryo, supporting its suggested role as a storage carbohydrate. Biochemical assays and molecular characterization of an α-galactosidase family member, OmAGAL2, indicated that the enzyme is involved in planteose hydrolysis in the apoplast around the embryo after the perception of strigolactones, to provide the embryo with essential hexoses for germination. These results indicate that OmAGAL2 is a potential molecular target for root parasitic weed control.

Aromatic carbonyl thiourea PI-28 has been focused on as a lead compound for the developing radicle elongation inhibitors in germinating Orobanche minor dry seeds. In this study, we have synthesized PI-28 and its derivatives using commercially available phenols, 2-chloroacetamide, and aryl isothiocyanates. In this method, 2-aryloxyacetanilides, which are also attractive as bioactive compounds, were obtained as byproducts. These compounds were formed due to the loss of isothiocyanate moiety from the formed aromatic carbonyl thioureas.

Damage caused by Orobanchaceae root parasitic weeds is a substantial agricultural problem for global food security. Many studies have been conducted to establish practical methods of control, but efforts are still required for successful management. Seed germination of root parasitic weeds requires host-derived germination stimulants including strigolactones (SLs). Studies on SLs have revealed that a butenolide ring is the essential moiety for SL activity as a germination stimulant. Interestingly, recent studies have revealed that butenolide hormones regulate the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and mediate communication in actinomycete bacteria. Because of the structural similarity between SLs and the bacterial butenolides, we evaluated the germination stimulatory activity of butenolides isolated from Streptomyces albus J1074 on root parasitic weeds. These butenolides were found to specifically induce seed germination of Orobanche minor. Our findings contribute to understanding the molecular mechanisms of germination stimulant perception and to the development of a method for their biological control.

A series of novel monocyclometalated [Ir(tpy)(btp)Cl]+ complexes (Ir2-Ir5) were synthesized using 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) and 2-(2-pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene (btp) ligands, as well as their derivatives bearing electron-donating tert-butyl (t-Bu) and electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl (CF3) groups. Ir2-Ir5 exhibited visible-light absorption stronger than that of the known complex [Ir(tpy)(ppy)Cl]+ (Ir1; ppy = 2-phenylpyridine). Spectroscopic and computational studies revealed that two triplet states were involved in the excited-state dynamics. One is a weakly emissive and short-lived ligand to ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) state originating from the charge transfer from the btp to the tpy ligand. The other is a highly emissive and long-lived ligand-centered (LC) state localized on the btp ligand. Interestingly, the excited state dominant with 3LLCT was completely changed to the 3LC state upon the introduction of substituents on both the tpy and btp ligands. For instance, the excited state of the parent complex Ir2 was weakly emissive (Φ = 2%) and short-lived (τ = 110 ns) in CH2Cl2; conversely, Ir5, fully furnished with t-Bu and CF3 groups, displayed intense phosphorescence with a prolonged lifetime (τ = 14 μs). This difference became increasingly prominent when the solvent was changed to aqueous CH3CN, most probably due to the 3LLCT stabilization. The predominant excited-state nature was switchable between the 3LLCT and 3LC states depending on the substituents employed; this was demonstrated through investigations of Ir3 and Ir4, bearing either the t-Bu or the CF3 group, where the complexes exhibited properties intermediate between those of Ir2 and Ir5. All of the Ir(III) complexes were tested as photosensitizers in photocatalytic H2 evolution over a Co molecular catalyst, and Ir5 outperformed the others, including Ir1, due to improvement in the following key properties: visible-light-absorption ability, excited-state lifetime, and reductive power of the one-electron-reduced species against the catalyst.

Lignans are widely distributed plant secondary metabolites that have received attention for their benefits to human health. Sesamin is a furofran lignan that is conventionally extracted from Sesamum seeds and shows anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in the human liver. Sesamin is biosynthesized by the Sesamum-specific enzyme CYP81Q1, and the natural sources of sesamin are annual plants that are at risk from climate change. In contrast, Forsythia species are widely distributed perennial woody plants that highly accumulate the precursor lignan pinoresinol. To sustainably supply sesamin, we developed a transformation method for Forsythia leaf explants and generated transgenic Forsythia plants that heterologously expressed the CYP81Q1 gene. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and LC-mass spectrometry analyses detected sesamin and its intermediate piperitol in the leaves of two independent transgenic lines of F. intermedia and F. koreana. We also detected the accumulation of sesamin and piperitol in their vegetatively propagated descendants, demonstrating the stable and efficient production of these lignans. These results indicate that CYP81Q1-transgenic Forsythia plants are promising platforms to produce diverse lignans and provide an important strategy for the cost-effective and scalable production of lignans.

Although numerous studies have been conducted to establish an effective control strategy for the growth and spread of root parasitic weeds, no practical method has been developed so far. Previously, metabolomic analyses were conducted on germinating seeds of a broomrape, Orobanche minor, to find novel targets for its selective control. Interestingly, planteose metabolism was identified as a possible target, and nojirimycin (NJ) selectively inhibited the germination of O. minor by intercepting planteose metabolism, although its precise mode of action was unclear. Here, transcriptome analysis by RNA-Seq was conducted to obtain molecular insight into the effects of NJ on germinating O. minor seeds. Differential gene expression analysis results suggest that NJ alters sugar metabolism and/or signaling, which is required to promote seed germination. This finding will contribute to understanding the effect of NJ and establishing a novel strategy for parasitic weed control.

A proton-electron coupling system, exhibiting unique bistability or multistability of the protonated state, is an attractive target for developing new switchable materials based on proton dynamics. Herein, we present an iron(II) hydrazone crystalline compound, which displays the stepwise transition and bistability of proton transfer at the crystal level. These phenomena are realized through the coupling with spin transition. Although the multi-step transition with hysteresis has been observed in various systems, the corresponding behavior of proton transfer has not been reported in crystalline systems; thus, the described iron(II) complex is the first example. Furthermore, because proton transfer occurs only in one of the two ligands and π electrons redistribute in it, the dipole moment of the iron(II) complexes changes with the proton transfer, wherein the total dipole moment in the crystal was canceled out owing to the antiferroelectric-like arrangement.

Rhizotaxis is established under changing environmental conditions via periodic priming of lateral root (LR) initiation at the root tips and adaptive LR formation along the primary root (PR). In contrast to the adaptable LR formation in response to nutrient availability, there is little information on root development during interactions with beneficial microbes. The Arabidopsis root system is characteristically modified upon colonization by the root endophytic fungus Serendipita indica, accompanied by a marked stimulation of LR formation and the inhibition of PR growth. This root system modification has been attributed to endophyte-derived indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). However, it has yet to be clearly explained how fungal IAA affects the intrinsic LR formation process. In this study, we show that diffusible compounds (chemical signals) other than IAA are present in the coculture medium of Arabidopsis and S. indica and induce auxin-responsive DR5::GUS expression in specific sections within the pericycle layer. The DR5::GUS expression was independent of polar auxin transport and the major IAA biosynthetic pathways, implicating unidentified mechanisms responsible for the auxin response and LR formation. Detailed metabolite analysis revealed the presence of multiple compounds that induce local auxin responses and LR formation. We found that benzoic acid (BA) cooperatively acted with exogenous IAA to generate a local auxin response in the pericycle layer, suggesting that BA is one of the chemical signals involved in adaptable LR formation. Identification and characterization of the chemical signals will contribute to a greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptable root development and to unconventional technologies for sustainable agriculture.

In plants, the UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS8 (UVR8) perceives UV-B and induces UV-B responses. UVR8 absorbs a range of UV-B (260–335 nm). However, the responsiveness of plants to each UV-B wavelength has not been intensively studied so far. Here, we performed transcriptome and metabolome analyses of Arabidopsis using UV light emitting diodes (LEDs) with peak wavelengths of 280 and 310 nm to investigate the differences in the wavelength-specific UV-B responses. Irradiation with both UV-LEDs induced gene expression of the transcription factor ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5), which has a central role in the UVR8 signaling pathway. However, the overall transcriptomic and metabolic responses to 280 and 310 nm UV-LED irradiation were different. Most of the known UV-B-responsive genes, such as defense-related genes, responded only to 280 nm UV-LED irradiation. Lipids, polyamines and organic acids were the metabolites most affected by 280 nm UV-LED irradiation, whereas the effect of 310 nm UV-LED irradiation on the metabolome was considerably less. Enzymatic genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway upstream in anthocyanin biosynthesis were up-regulated only by 280 nm UV-LED irradiation. These results revealed that the responsivenesses of Arabidopsis to 280 and 310 nm UV-B were significantly different, suggesting that UV-B signaling is mediated by more complex pathways than the current model.

Molecular materials whose electronic states are multiply varied depending on external stimuli are among the most promising targets for the development of multiply accessible molecular switches. Here, we report a honeycomb layer composed of tetraoxolene-bridged iron (Fe) subunits whose charge-ordered states are multiply variable via thermal treatments and solvation/desolvation with the crystallinity intact. The compound is (NPr4)2[Fe2(Cl2An)3] (1-d; NPr4+ = tetra-n-propylammonium; Cl2An2− = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinonate), which possesses three charge-ordered states: a low-temperature (LT) phase [(Fe3+)2(Cl2An2−)(Cl2An˙3−)2]2−; an intermediate (IM) phase [(Fe2.5+)2(Cl2An2−)(Cl2An2.5−)2]2−; and a high-temperature (HT) phase [(Fe2+)2(Cl2An2−)3]2− that varies according to temperature. In addition, the LT phase of 1-d is reversibly changeable to another IM phase in its solvated compound 1via a solvation/desolvation process at room temperature. This example demonstrates a new multiple-switching system based on electron transfer and host–guest chemistry in a charge-flexible metal–organic framework., A two-dimensional honeycomb layer composed of tetraoxolene-bridged iron subunits whose charge-ordered states are multiply variable via thermal treatments and solvation/desolvation is present.

Ultrasmall particles, different from the larger size nanoparticles, have recently attracted significant attention in the scientific community in nanotechnology for catalytic, electronic and optical applications; however, their magnetic properties remain unexplored due to the difficult structural analysis. A challenging issue is to develop a preparation method for iron oxide particles (IOPs) with fine size control, and to determine the dependence of magnetic properties on the morphology and crystallinity of the magnetic particles. However, synthetic approaches to obtain IOPs, regarded as one of the new fields of magnetic nanoparticles, have been significantly limited. This article reported a developed synthetic method to prepare IOPs on carbon supports using pulsed arc plasma deposition (APD) in flowing oxygen gas, which clarified the finely-controlled formation of IOPs on graphene nanosheets. Structural characterization of the IOPs revealed the formation of crystalline γ-Fe2O3 ultrasmall particles with oxygen deficiency. The pulsed APD method for IOPs is the first simple and convenient technique to not only prevent significant aggregation and contamination by organic compounds and avoid the need for thermal pretreatment, but also provide uniform crystalline nano-order particles.

Kinetic control of molecular self-assembly remains difficult because of insufficient understanding of molecular self-assembly mechanisms. Here we report the formation of a metastable [Pd2L4]4+ cage structure composed of naphthalene-based ditopic ligands (L) and Pd(II) ions in very high yield (99%) under kinetic control by modulating the energy landscape. When self-assembly occurs with anionic guests in weakly cooordinating solvent then suitable intermedites and the metastable cage is formed. These conditions also prevent further transformation into the thermodynamically decomposed state. The cage formation pathways under kinetic control and the effect of the anions encapsulated on the self-assembly processes were investigated by QASAP (quantitative analysis of self-assembly process) and NASAP (numerical analysis of self-assembly process). It was found that the self-assembly with a preferred guest (BF4 -) proceeds through intermediates composed of no more components than the cage ([PdaLbXc]2a+ (a ≤ 2, b ≤ 4, X indicates a leaving ligand)) and that the final intramolecular cage-closure step is the rate-determining step. In contrast, a weaker guest (OTf-) causes the transient formation of intermediates composed of more components than the cage ([PdaLbXc]2a+ (a > 2, b > 4)), which are finally converted into the cage.

An important technique to realize novel electron- and/or proton-based functionalities is to use a proton-electron coupling mechanism. When either a proton or electron is excited, the other one is modulated, producing synergistic functions. However, although compounds with proton-coupled electron transfer have been synthesized, crystalline molecular compounds that exhibit proton-transfer-coupled spin-transition (PCST) behavior have not been reported. Here, we report the first example of a PCST Fe(II) complex, wherein the proton lies on the N of hydrazone and pyridine moieties in the ligand at high-spin and low-spin Fe(II), respectively. When the Fe(II) complex is irradiated with light, intramolecular proton transfer occurs from pyridine to hydrazone in conjunction with the photoinduced spin transition via the PCST mechanism. Because the light-induced excited high-spin state is trapped at low temperatures in the Fe(II) complex-a phenomenon known as the light-induced excited-spin-state trapping effect-the light-induced proton-transfer state, wherein the proton lies on the N of hydrazone, is also trapped as a metastable state. The proton transfer was accomplished within 50 ps at 190 K. The bistable nature of the proton position, where the position can be switched by light irradiation, is useful for modulating proton-based functionalities in molecular devices.

Pyroelectricity plays a crucial role in modern sensors and energy conversion devices. However, obtaining materials with large and nearly constant pyroelectric coefficients over a wide temperature range for the practical uses remains a formidable challenge, because in conventional ferroelectric materials the pyroelectric effect promptly declines upon cooling from the transition temperature. Attempting to discover a solution to this obstacle, we combined molecular design of labile electronic structure with the crystal engineering of the molecular orientation in lattice resulting in the electronic pyroelectricity of purely molecular origin. Here, we report a polar crystal of an [FeCo] dinuclear complex exhibiting a peculiar pyroelectric behavior (a substantial sharp pyroelectric current peak and an unusual continuous pyroelectric current at higher temperatures) which is caused by a combination of Fe spin transition and redistribution of electron density between redox isomers of high-spin Fe through a charge transfer between the Fe atom and redox active ligand. As a result, temperature dependence of the pyroelectric behavior reported here is opposite and originates from the interconversion between three distinct electronic states. The obtained pyroelectric coefficient is comparable to that of polyvinylidene difluoride at room temperature.

One of the most attractive research in the field of molecular solids is multifunctional molecular magnets coupled with spin, charge and photon, and single-molecular magnet/single-chain magnet toward spintronics. In this chapter, we focus on the molecular magnetism and its related light-induced phase transitions from the viewpoint of Mossbauer spectroscopy. In the Sect. 6.1, the outline of this chapter is described. In the Sect. 6.2, static and dynamic spin crossover phenomena between the high-spin and low-spin states, and the spin frustration system induced by dynamic spin crossover phenomena for [MnIIFeIII(C2O3S)3] complex are described. In the Sect. 6.3, metal complexes showing charge transfer phase transitions such as Prussian blue analogous complexes and [FeIIFeIII(C2O2S2)3] complexes and their photo-induced phase transitions are described. In the Sect. 6.4, various kinds of molecular magnets including single molecular chain magnets are described.

To investigate the interactions of 57Fe atoms with sulfur hexafluoride SF6 molecules, in-beam Mossbauer spectra were measured for 57Mn implanted SF6 at 9 K and 65 K. Isolated 57Fe atoms or ions produced by β-decay were not trapped within the SF6 matrix. At 9 K, monomeric FeF2 and FeF3 molecules were produced by reaction of 57Fe with F atoms released by decomposition of the SF6 molecules. When the temperature of the SF6 solid was increased to 65 K, FeF4 was formed in addition to FeF2 and FeF3. Density functional calculations were performed to confirm the assignments of the candidate species identified in the Mossbauer spectra.

We successfully prepared and crystallographically characterized the first intermolecular charge-transfer (CT)-based vapochromic compound, (EV)(H3O)2[Fe(CN)6] (1-Wet, EV2+: 1,1′-diethyl-4,4′-bipyridine-1,1′-diium), an ethyl viologen-containing CT salt. 1-Wet, which is purple in color, is transformed into a brown powder (1-Dry) upon exposure to methanol vapor, drying over silica gel, or heating; 1-Dry returns to 1-Wet upon exposure to water vapor. These color changes are induced by hydration and dehydration, and gravimetric analyses suggest that 1-Dry is the dehydrated form of 1-Wet, namely, (EV)(H)2[Fe(CN)6]. Interestingly, desorption of water molecules from the oxonium ions in 1-Wet produces isolated protons (H+) that remain in 1-Dry as counter cations. The iron mixed-valence complex ( n- C 3 H 7 ) 4 N[Fe II Fe III (dto) 3 ] (dto = C 2 O 2 S 2 ) exhibits a novel type of phase transition according electron transfer between Fe II and Fe III called charge transfer phase transition (CTPT). The existence of the CTPT highly depends on the 3d metal substitution with Zn, Mn, Cr, or Co for corresponding Fe site in ( n- C 3 H 7 ) 4 N[Fe II Fe III (dto) 3 ]. Here, we prepared a series of magnetically diluted complexes ( n- C 3 H 7 ) 4 N[Fe II Fe III 1− x V III x (dto) 3 ] ( x = 0–1), and carried out investigation of magnetic properties. Judging from the magnetic susceptibility measurement, there is no suppression of the CTPT unlike other 3d metal substituted cases. Moreover, 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed that about 60% of Fe II sites changed their spin states from high spin to low spin in case of substitution rate for x = 1.00. Since the difference of hardness and softness between metallic ions (Fe II , Fe III and V III ) and coordination sites of ligand (O or S in dto), this behavior is explained by the linkage isomerization of bridging ligand in formation process of the complex.

A molecular salt with a bulky cation and anion, (H2bipip)(H)2[Fe(CN)6] (1) (H2bipip2+: 4,4′-bipiperidine-1,1′-diium), has been prepared. The salt comprises protons (H+) as counter cations. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that the proton is trapped between two cyanido ligands of [Fe(CN)6]4− anions, forming a very short N⋯H+⋯N hydrogen bond.

Dilute Fe and Nb codoped SrTiO3-δ (STO) perovskites were prepared by a complex formation and thermal decomposition method. The structure, magnetization properties and chemical states of Fe and Nb codoped STO perovskites were characterized by XRD, VSM and Mossbauer spectrometry. Mossbauer spectra of 57Fe and Nb codoped STO perovskites consist of paramagnetic doublet and magnetic relaxation components. The 1% Fe + 5% Nb codoped STO sample showed the smallest lattice constant and the largest ferromagnetism among 0.5–4% Fe + 5% Nb codoped STO perovskites. The most distortion of cubic STO lattice and the largest magnetic relaxation in Mossbauer spectrum were observed for the 0.5% Fe and 5% Nb codoped STO perovskite. It is considered that diluted magnetism in this system is related with the deformation of cubic structure due to defects.

The template effect is a key feature to control the arrangement of building blocks in assemblies, but its kinetic nature remains elusive compared to the thermodynamic aspects, with the exception of very simple reactions. Here we report a kinetic template effect in a self-assembled cage composed of flexible ditopic ligands and Pd(II) ions. Without template anion, a micrometer-sized sheet is kinetically trapped (off-pathway), which is converted into the thermodynamically most stable cage by the template anion. When the template anion is present from the start, the cage is selectively produced by the preferential cyclization of a dinuclear intermediate (on-pathway). Quantitative and numerical analyses of the self-assembly of the cage on the on-pathway revealed that the accelerating effect of the template is stronger for the early stage reactions of the self-assembly than for the final cage formation step itself, indicating the kinetic template effect. Thermodynamic template effects are widely used in supramolecular assembly, but kinetic template effects are less well understood. Here the contributions of thermodynamic and kinetic template effects in the self-assembly of palladium metallocages are disentangled using QASAP methodology.

Root parasitic weeds, such as Orobanche spp. and Striga spp., cause serious damage to crops. Recently, it was demonstrated that nojirimycin (NJ) selectively inhibits seed germination in these weeds. In this study, we modified the medium for Streptomyces ficellus to increase its production of NJ and evaluated the culture as an antiparasitic weed agent. We screened alternatives to Pharmamedia™, an additive in the original medium, and found that marine broth stimulated NJ production. Moreover, soluble starch-depleted medium could maintain S. ficellus NJ production. The NJ concentration reached 710 mg/L after four-day batch culture in starch-depleted marine broth medium, which was 17-fold higher than that in the Pharmamedia™ medium. The culture in the marine broth medium inhibited seed germination of Orobanche spp. and Striga spp. as effectively as a standard solution of NJ.

A transparent film allowing tunable multicolor emission based on a composite of an organometallic compound and a cation-exchange membrane has been developed, in which the cyclometallated iridium(III) complex [IrIII(4Py-ppy)3] (=tris[2-(2-pyridinyl-&kappa, N)-4-(4-pyridinyl)phenyl-&kappa, C]iridium) (1) with pH-dependent emission wavelengths has been incorporated into Nafion by cation exchange. Soaking Nafion in the solution of 1 for 24 h and exposed to buffers at pH 2, 4, and 10 resulted in maximum emission wavelengths of 587, 560, and 503 nm, respectively. The photophysical properties of 1@Nafion were also enhanced, as its maximum emission wavelength was more blue-shifted than those of 602, 564, and 503 nm in the solutions. The emission quantum yields (&Phi, ) and lifetimes (&tau, ) of 1@Nafion prepared under an acidic condition were up to &Phi, = 1.8% and &tau, = 0.11, 0.92 &mu, s, which are considerably higher than the corresponding solutions of &Phi, = 0.5% and &tau, = 0.02, 0.18 &mu, s. This is attributed to the fact that 1 is surrounded by the polymer chains of Nafion and immobilized in a relatively rigid medium, which hinders non-radiative deactivation such as thermal relaxation.

Scopelophila ligulata is an Fe-hyperaccumulator moss growing in acidic environments, but the mechanism of Fe accumulation remains unknown. To understand the mechanism, we determined Fe species in S. ligulata samples. The moss samples were collected from four sites in Japan. The concentrations of Fe, P, S, Cl, and K in them were measured by induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Fe species in some of them were determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy and were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Fe species in S. ligulata samples were determined to be jarosite, ferritin, high-spin Fe(II) species, and akaganeite. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the biomineralization of jarosite in mosses. This result, combined with the fact that bacteria, a fungus, and a grass mineralize jarosite, suggests that its biomineralization is a common characteristic in a wide variety of living organisms. These findings indicate that the biomineralization of jarosite occurs not only in the region-specific species but in species adapted to a low-pH and metal-contaminated environment in different regions, provide a better understanding of the mechanism of Fe accumulation in the Fe-hyperaccumulator moss S. ligulata, and offer new insights into the biomineralization of jarosite.

A series of Mn x Fe3−x O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanoparticles was successfully synthesized via a simple coprecipitation method. The starting material was a natural magnetite purified from local iron sand. Crystallite nanoparticles were produced by drying without using a high calcination temperature. Rietveld analysis of the X-ray diffractometry (XRD) data for all samples demonstrated that the Mn ions partially substituted the Fe ions in the spinel cubic structure of the Fe3O4 to form Mn x Fe3−x O4 phases. We applied two lognormal spherical and single mass fractal models to the analysis of the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data and revealed that the primary Mn x Fe3−x O4 particles ranged in size from 1.5 to 3.8 nm and formed three-dimensional clusters as secondary structures. The samples displayed superparamagnetic behavior, having the saturation magnetization which was most likely influenced by the competing contribution from Mn, the sizes of the primary particles, and their clusters. Further analysis revealed that the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled curves of the Mn x Fe3−x O4 nanoclusters exhibited a superparamagnetic phenomenon with the lowest magnetic blocking temperature approximately 145 K.

Highlight Planteose metabolism was uncovered as a key metabolic pathway for germination of Orobanche minor. Inhibition of planteose metabolism by nojirimycin resulted in selective inhibition of O. minor germination., Root parasitic weeds in Orobanchaceae cause serious damage to worldwide agriculture. Germination of the parasites requires host-derived germination stimulants, such as strigolactones, as indicators of host roots within reach of the parasite’s radicles. This unique germination process was focused on to identify metabolic pathways required for germination, and to design a selective control strategy. A metabolomic analysis of germinating seeds of clover broomrape, Orobanche minor, was conducted to identify its distinctive metabolites. Consequently, a galactosyl-sucrose trisaccharide, planteose (α-d-galactopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-d-fructofuranosyl-(2→1)-α-d-glucopyranoside), was identified as a metabolite that decreased promptly after reception of the germination stimulant. To investigate the importance of planteose metabolism, the effects of several glycosidase inhibitors were examined, and nojirimycin bisulfite (NJ) was found to alter the sugar metabolism and to selectively inhibit the germination of O. minor. Planteose consumption was similar in NJ-treated seeds and non-treated germinating seeds; however, NJ-treated seeds showed lower consumption of sucrose, a possible intermediate of planteose metabolism, resulting in significantly less glucose and fructose. This inhibitory effect was recovered by adding glucose. These results suggest that planteose is a storage carbohydrate required for early stage of germination of O. minor, and NJ inhibits germination by blocking the supply of essential glucose from planteose and sucrose. Additionally, NJ selectively inhibited radicle elongation of germinated seeds of Orobanchaceae plants (Striga hermonthica and Phtheirospermum japonicum). Thus, NJ will be a promising tool to develop specific herbicides to the parasites, especially broomrapes, and to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of this unique germination.

Magnetic properties of perovskite oxides, SrSn1-x Fe x O3-δ (x ≤ 0.15), substituted with nonmagnetic Ca and Ti ions were studied. XRD patterns showed the orthorhombic structure (close to tetragonal) of (Sr1-y Ca y )(Sn1-x Fe x )O3-δ and Sr(Sn1-x-y Fe x Ti y )O3-δ . The cell volumes decreased with the increase of Ca and Ti doping rates. Although Ti-substituted Sr(Sn, Fe)O3-δ showed small saturation magnetizations as compared with non-Ti substituted one, the magnetization increased a little with Ti doping rates up to 15%. On the other hand, all Ca-substituted Sr(Sn, Fe)O3-δ showed larger saturation magnetization than non-Ca substituted one. Two doublets of Fe3+ and a doublet of Fe4+ were observed in Mossbauer spectra of Ca-substituted Sr(Sn, Fe)O3-δ with weak ferromagnetism, and two sextets of high spin Fe3+ were additionally observed in Mossbauer spectra of Ca-doped Sr(Sn, Fe)O3-δ with relatively strong ferromagnetism. When Sr(Sn, Fe)O3-δ were further codoped with Ca and Ti ions, they showed the stable and enhanced ferromagnetic properties. It is considered that magnetic polarons among high spin Fe3+ species are overlapped by shrinking or deforming the crystal structure of perovskite oxides. That is the magnetism induced by a chemical pressure of perovskite oxides.

SrSn1-x-yFexSbyO3-δ was prepared by a sol-gel and thermal annealing method. The lattice parameters of SrSn0.97-xFexSb0.03O3-δ (x = 0.04-0.15) decreased with the increase of Fe doping rates. All samples showed ferromagnetic behavior together with a paramagnetic component, relatively strong ferromagnetism for SrSn0.97-xFexSb0.03O3-δ and SrSn1-xFexO3-δ with Fe doping rates over 6% and 8%, respectively The Sb doping leads to the ferromagnetic behavior for the samples with the low-concentration of Fe dopant. 119Sn Mossbauer spectra of SrSn0.92Fe0.08O3-δ and SrSn0.88Fe0.12O3-δ provided a broad doublet under a magnetic field of 0.85 T. The doublet could be analyzed as a magnetic sextet with 0.76 T. In 57Fe Mossbauer spectra of SrSn0.88Fe0.12O3-δ under zero and 0.85 T different line intensity ratios of two sextets were observed. It suggests that the magnetic spin structure of SrSn1-xFexO3-δ is transversely ferrimagnetic.

Plant-based human vaccines have been actively developed in recent years, and rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the best candidate crops for their production and delivery. By expressing a modified cholera toxin B (CTB) subunit, we previously developed MucoRice-CTB, a rice-based vaccine against cholera, which is caused by infection of the intestine with the bacteria Vibrio cholerae. MucoRice-CTB lines have been extensively characterized by whole-genome sequencing and proteome analyses to evaluate the mutation profiles and proteome status, respectively. Here, we report non-targeted metabolomic profiling of the MucoRice-CTB transgenic rice line 51A (MR-CTB51A), MucoRice-RNAi (MR-RNAi), and their non-transgenic parent line by using gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The levels of several amino acids, organic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and secondary metabolites were significantly increased in MR-CTB51A compared with the non-transgenic parent line. These metabolomics results complement essential information obtained by genome sequencing and proteomics approaches, thereby contributing to comprehensive understanding of the properties of MucoRice-CTB as a plant-based vaccine.

Pinoresinol reductase and pinoresinol/lariciresinol reductase play important roles in an early step of lignan biosynthesis in plants. The activities of both enzymes have also been detected in bacteria. In this study, pinZ, which was first isolated as a gene for bacterial pinoresinol reductase, was constitutively expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. Higher reductive activity toward pinoresinol was detected in the resultant transgenic plants but not in wild-type plant. Principal component analysis of data from untargeted metabolome analyses of stem, root, and leaf extracts of the wild-type and two independent transgenic lines indicate that pinZ expression caused dynamic metabolic changes in stems, but not in roots and leaves. The metabolome data also suggest that expression of pinZ influenced the metabolisms of lignan and glucosinolates but not so much of neolignans such as guaiacylglycerol-8-O-4'-feruloyl ethers. In-depth quantitative analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) indicated that amounts of pinoresinol and its glucoside form were markedly reduced in the transgenic plant, whereas the amounts of glucoside form of secoisolariciresinol in transgenic roots, leaves, and stems increased. The detected levels of lariciresinol in the transgenic plant following β-glucosidase treatment also tended to be higher than those in the wild-type plant. Our findings indicate that overexpression of pinZ induces change in lignan compositions and has a major effect not only on lignan biosynthesis but also on biosynthesis of other primary and secondary metabolites.
