A set of papers by Dr Peter Baker about the fundamental questions of existence: What was before the instant of creation of the universe, what surrounds and gave birth to it, where does existence begin and end, and what is the origin of everything both inside and outside the universe?

Defining protein-protein interactions (PPIs) in their native environment is crucial to understanding protein structure and function. Cross-linking-mass spectrometry (XL-MS) has proven effective in capturing PPIs in living cells; however, the proteome coverage remains limited. Here, we have developed a robust in vivo XL-MS platform to facilitate in-depth PPI mapping by integrating a multifunctional MS-cleavable cross-linker with sample preparation strategies and high-resolution MS. The advancement of click chemistry-based enrichment significantly enhanced the detection of cross-linked peptides for proteome-wide analyses. This platform enabled the identification of 13,904 unique lysine-lysine linkages from in vivo cross-linked HEK 293 cells, permitting construction of the largest in vivo PPI network to date, comprising 6,439 interactions among 2,484 proteins. These results allowed us to generate a highly detailed yet panoramic portrait of human interactomes associated with diverse cellular pathways. The strategy presented here signifies a technological advancement for in vivo PPI mapping at the systems level and can be generalized for charting protein interaction landscapes in any organisms.

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic phase of magnetic materials where the spins continue to fluctuate without any symmetry breaking down to zero temperature. Among the handful reports of QSL with spin $S\ge$1, examples with magnetic ions on a three-dimensional magnetic lattice are extremely rare since both larger spin and higher dimension tend to suppress quantum fluctuations. In this work, we offer a new strategy to achieve 3-D QSL with high spin by utilizing two types of transition metal ions, both are magnetically active but located at crystallographically inequivalent positions. We design a 3-D magnetic system Ba$_3$NiIr$_2$O$_9$ consisting of interconnected corner shared NiO$_6$ octahedra and face shared Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer, both having triangular arrangements in \textit{a-b} plane. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ni$^{2+}$ ($S$=1). Our detailed thermodynamic and magnetic measurements reveal that this compound is a realization of gapless QSL state down to at least 100 mK. Ab-initio calculations find a strong magnetic exchange between Ir and Ni sublattices and in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling between the dimers, resulting in dynamically fluctuating magnetic moments on both the Ir and Ni sublattice., Comment: 4 Figures

Researchers dissatisfied with the performance of the Beverton-Holt model, in contexts where “Beverton-Holt-like” behavior is expected, have introduced a plethora of alternative model forms. This paper presents a formalization of what constitutes “Beverton-Holt-like behavior” which includes many of these forms, and shows that the class of functions so defined has a coherent and non-trivial mathematical theory. Data from the stock production database assembled by Ransom Myers is used to illustrate why such generalizations have been sought in the first place, and to highlight the difficulties in choosing between model forms on purely empirical grounds. Special attention is given to a parametric family of functions within this class, here called “θ-BH” functions. These functions cover a broad range of shapes, including both the Beverton-Holt and hockey stick functions, and share useful properties with these two widely-used models.

The structural and magnetic properties of the face-centered cubic double perovskite Ba2MnWO6 were investigated using neutron powder diffraction, DC-magnetometry, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering. Ba2MnWO6 undergoes Type II long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at a Neel temperature of 8(1) K with a frustration index, f = 8. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to identify the magnetic coupling constants J1 and J2, which were found to equal -0.080 meV and -0.076 meV respectively. This indicated that both of the magnetic coupling constants were antiferromagnetic with similar magnitudes, which is in contrast to other known 3d metal double perovskites Ba2MWO6. Above the Neel temperature, muon spin relaxation measurements and inelastic neutron scattering techniques identify a short-range correlated magnetic state that is similar to that observed in the archetypical face-centered cubic lattice antiferromagnet MnO., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Partiendo de la crisis de la legitimidad y la ruina de las economías hegemónicas que organizan nuestra época, este artículo avanza varias claves para lo que llamamos reflexión infrapolítica, que busca dar un paso atrás con respecto a las formulaciones totales, sean las teológicas políticas o las diferentes formas de subjetivismo. Lo que llamamos reflexión infrapolítica, que asume la diferencia ontológica y la singularidad del estilo, busca preparar una democracia capaz de reinventar un sentido de igualdad desde lo inconmensurable. Por otra parte, este ensayo también introduce una constelación de estudiosos que asumen la reflexión infrapolítica desde estilos y problemáticas concretas Can we reinvent a form of democracy beyond the will to power and political claims as supplements to the ever-increasing technical arrangement between world and life? There is no doubt that today we are living in an interregnum that has radically dissociated itself from the political categories and forms inherited from the architectonics of modernity, which Carl Schmitt identified with the sovereign ordering of the Katechon. While confronting the ruin of legitimacy and hegemonies that organize the political in our epoch, this article advances the notion of “infrapolitical reflection” as a step back from the closure of political theologies and subjectivist determinations of thought. What we call infrapolitical reflection prepares the grounds for thinking a democracy committed to a radicalization of incommensurable equality in the wake of nihilism. On the other hand, this essay also introduces a constellation of scholars who enter in relation with infrapolitical thought from very concrete perspectives and styles.

Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($��$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $��^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins,exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $��^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of 20 Oe. All these $��$SR results unequivocally support the formation of a gapless U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$., 5 figures

First paragraph: The Passage West (2012) by the Italian philosopher Giacomo Marramao, translated from the original Passaggio a Occidente (2003), is a remarkable contribution to understanding the new global paradigm we, as both westerners and non-westerners, inhabit, elaborating on the meaning of globalization and political modernity in our times with an eye to both reinterpreting the heritage of the west and proposing possible political horizons for the future. As the title of the work already suggests, central to Marramao´s proposals is the figure of the West itself, though perhaps it is more accurate to say a certain history of the West, or even of the West as history. If this is the case, this place is not (or not only) geographical. It, rather, marks a certain before and after where the “after” will eventually become the emergence of the global age itself as the passage west. This ‘west’ should be understood, then, on both a conceptual and historical level. With reference to the former, we are to understand that the West is a very particular form of universality, exceptional, following Max Weber, in the course of human history, and universal in so far as it dominates by unifying, thereby realizing, the universal in its very etymology. Only one modality of the universal is known to it: that of domination. Specifically, this domination has its root in “a particular declension of rationality, which is even more central than the logic of power” (151). Its biggest armament is its particular form of rationality, and this rationality is in turn dependent upon “specific forms of ‘practical-rational behaviors’ that have no adequate parallels in other cultures” (Marramao, 151).

The spin dynamics of Cr8Mn, a nine‐membered antiferromagnetic (AF) molecular nanomagnet, are investigated. Cr8Mn is a rare example of a large odd‐membered AF ring, and has an odd‐number of 3d‐electrons present. Odd‐membered AF rings are unusual and of interest due to the presence of competing exchange interactions that result in frustrated‐spin ground states. The chemical synthesis and structures of two Cr8Mn variants that differ only in their crystal packing are reported. Evidence of spin frustration is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy (μSR). From INS studies we accurately determine an appropriate microscopic spin Hamiltonian and we show that μSR is sensitive to the ground‐spin‐state crossing from S=1/2 to S=3/2 in Cr8Mn. The estimated width of the muon asymmetry resonance is consistent with the presence of an avoided crossing. The investigation of the internal spin structure of the ground state, through the analysis of spin‐pair correlations and scalar‐spin chirality, shows a non‐collinear spin structure that fluctuates between non‐planar states of opposite chiralities.

This joint collaboration between the Purdue Libraries and Cyber Center demonstrates the next generation of computational platforms supporting interdisciplinary collaborative research. Such platforms are necessary for rapid advancements of technology, industry demand and scholarly congruence towards open data, open access, big data and cyber-infrastructure data science training. Our approach will utilize a Discovery Undergraduate Research Investigation effort as a preliminary research means to further joint library and computer science data curation research, tool development and refinement.

This is potential joint collaborative research between the Purdue University and citizens of Kenya via the Global Engineering Program in the areas of agriculture in water harvesting. Specifically, in the rural part of Kenya, outside of Nairobi, lives can be greatly impacted. Libraries of tomorrow will have global capacity and responsibility to serve all aspects of global citizenry. Herein is one possible Kenyan example. In partnership with the Tinmore Institute, an International Food, Water, and Energy Security team of experts, such international collaboration with Purdue's Global Engineering program could be quite successful within the areas of agricultural and water security sustainability. Moreover, Purdue’s expertise and reputation as a global leader in research and scholarship can be further demonstrated.

The challenges facing the scientific community are common and real: conduct relevant and verifiable research in a rapidly changing collaborative landscape with an ever increasing scale of data. It has come to a point where research activities cannot scale at the rate required without improved cyberinfrastructure (CI). In this paper we describe CRIS (The Computational Research Infrastructure for Science), with its primary tenets to provide an easy to use, scalable, and collaborative scientific data management and workflow cyberinfrastructure for scientists lacking extensive computational expertise. Some of the key features of CRIS are: 1) semantic definition of scientific data using domain vocabularies; 2) embedded provenance for all levels of research activity (data, workflows, tools etc.); 3) easy integration of existing heterogeneous data and computational tools on local or remote computers; 4) automatic data quality monitoring for syntactic and domain standards; and 5) shareable yet secure access to research data, computational tools and equipment. CRIS currently has a community of users in Agronomy, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Healthcare Engineering at Purdue University (cris.cyber.purdue.edu).

The research project described herein was designed to measure teacher education students' epistemological beliefs. Teacher education students' epistemological beliefs were compared according to participants' academic and demographic characteristics as well as characteristics of the courses in which students are enrolled at the time of study data collection. Participants included teacher education students currently studying in Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education. Results indicated that, while participants' epistemological beliefs and the development thereof are both, at times, related to their demographic and academic characteristics as well as the characteristics of the courses in which they were enrolled during the study, sometimes as statistically significant levels, further research needs to be conducted in order to further characterize the nature of these relationships, taking into consideration variables not accounted for in the current study.

Purpose: Warehouses are key nodes in many supply chains and typically represent over 20% of logistics costs. However, other than property market studies, there has been relatively little research on warehousing, particularly as regards how trends in warehouses may relate to changes in such parameters as wider economic and supply chain factors. The purpose of this paper is to examine this area in order to explore how trends in warehousing may relate to existing warehousing and supply chain theory so as to facilitate further research into the relationship between warehousing and "smarter" logistics strategies and efficient supply chain performance. Research approach: The paper is based on a longitudinal study examining the take-up (i.e. occupation) of new large warehouses in Great Britain over the past 16 years covering some 700 records. For the purposes of this study, large warehouses are classified as those over 100,000 square feet (9,290 square metres) in area. These trends, together with those of total warehouse stock, are then related to national statistics, warehouse surveys, supply chain changes and other relevant data over that period. Findings and Originality: This is a rare longitudinal study of this subject. It is found that, until the recent recession, the total warehouse stock, as well as the take-up of large warehouses, has been increasing and this can be associated with such factors as economic growth, retail spending and globalisation. Both the footprint and height of large warehouses has been rising and this may be due to such factors as network economies and warehouse technology. The locations of warehouses are becoming more dispersed, possibly due to the growth in e-commerce and port-centric logistics. In addition, it was found that large warehouses have been increasingly taken up by retailers and manufacturers rather than logistics companies. Research impact: This paper examines the possible influence of economic and supply chain trends on warehousing in Great Britain. As well as testing existing theories, the data provides a sound foundation for future research. For example, there have been conflicting evidence in previous research regarding economies and diseconomies of scale and this discussion can now be set against trends in warehouse footprint and height. Practical impact: The paper provides a better understanding and basis for decision making by planners, developers, funding corporations, operators and end users. For example, topics such as size and height of buildings are examined, as well as trends in port-centric logistics, rail connections and e-fulfilment. The changing nature of warehouse designs in terms of wider economic and supply chain trends is particularly important for practitioners as warehousing costs are to a large extent determined at the design phase and have a major impact on the effectiveness of the overall supply chain of which they are a part.

This paper discusses an energy-absorbing underride for trucks. The unit is capable of effective injury reduction in underriding impacts to cars of most sizes while eliminating or minimizing the damage suffered by the truck. It is shown that the design of the unit does not affect the ability of a truck to negotiate steep angles but reduces the effect of impact with road furniture, curbs, ramps, etc. to negligible proportions.

Cyanobacteria are one of the principal sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which cause offensive taste and odor (T&O) in drinking and recreational water, fish, shellfish and other seafood. Although non-toxic to humans, these T&O compounds severely undermine public trust in these commodities, resulting in substantial costs in treatment, and lost revenue to drinking water, aquaculture, food and beverage and tourist/hospitality industries. Mitigation and control have been hindered by the complexity of the communities and processes which produce and modify T&O events, making it difficult to source-track the major producer(s) and the factors governing VOC production and fate. Over the past decade, however, advances in bioinformatics, enzymology, and applied detection technologies have greatly enhanced our understanding of the pathways, the enzymes and the genetic coding for some of the most problematic VOCs produced by cyanobacteria. This has led to the development of tools for rapid and sensitive detection and monitoring for the VOC production at source, and provided the basis for further diagnostics of endogenous and exogenous controls. This review provides an overview of current knowledge of the major cyanobacterial VOCs, the producers, the biochemistry and the genetics and highlight the current applications and further research needs in this area. usc Refereed/Peer-reviewed
