Abstract

Systematic measurements of dust concentration profiles at a continental scale were recently made possible by the development of synergistic retrieval algorithms using combined lidar and sun photometer data and the establishment of robust remote-sensing networks in the framework of Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research InfraStructure Network (ACTRIS)/European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). We present a methodology for using these capabilities as a tool for examining the performance of dust transport models. The methodology includes considerations for the selection of a suitable data set and appropriate metrics for the exploration of the results. The approach is demonstrated for four regional dust transport models (BSC-DREAM8b v2, NMMB/BSC-DUST, DREAMABOL, DREAM8-NMME-MACC) using dust observations performed at 10 ACTRIS/EARLINET stations. Abstract

Solar radiation is the major source of energy for the earth‐atmosphere system. The absorbed shortwave radiation is re‐emitted as infrared radiation (longwave radiation) by the system. Fluctuations of the levels of both radiations are responsible for the changes of energy budget at the Earth’s surface. The variability of the solar and earth radiation may originate from the variability of astronomical parameters, the sun’s activity and natural or anthropogenic processes. In this study, the variability of both the solar radiation at the earth’s surface and the emitted longwave radiation is studied. The dataset includes down‐welling shortwave and up‐welling longwave radiation for the area of Europe and was obtained from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP). The data cover the time period from 1984 to 2006 with a spatial analysis of 280 km2 and a temporal analysis of 3 hours. Abstract

We present smoke lidar measurements from the Canadian fires of 2017. The advected smoke layers over Europe are detected at both tropospheric and stratospheric heights, with the latter presenting non-typical values of the Particle Linear Depolarization Ratio (PLDR) with strong wavelength dependence from the UV to the Near-IR. Specifically, the PLDR values are of the order of 22, 18 and 4% at 355, 532 and 1064 nm respectively. In an attempt to interpret these results, we apply the hypothesis that smoke particles have near-spherical and/or more complicated shapes. Scattering calculations with the T-matrix code support other findings in the literature ([1]- [2]), showing that the near-spherical shape (or closely similar shapes as in [2]), is the only shape that has been shown to reproduce the observed PLDR and Lidar Ratio (LR) values of the stratospheric smoke particles at the three measurement wavelengths.

Abstract

EARLINET, the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network, is the first aerosol lidar network with the main goal to provide a comprehensive, quantitative, and statistically significant database for the aerosol distribution on a continental scale. Lidar measurements are systematically performed at each station and additional observations are performed to monitor special events. The data quality of the database is assured by intercomparisons at both instrument and algorithm levels. At present, the database is already useful to fill partially the gap in the aerosol vertical distribution knowledge, necessary for a better understanding of aerosol effects on climate and atmospheric processes. It will be useful to improve the quality of several satellite retrieval systems affected by the presence of aerosols, and in validation measurement campaign for future satellite missions like CALIPSO.
