IR spectroscopy in the range 12–230 μm with the SPace IR telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) will reveal the physical processes governing the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time, bridging the gap between the James Webb Space Telescope and the upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes at shorter wavelengths and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array at longer wavelengths. The SPICA, with its 2.5-m telescope actively cooled to below 8 K, will obtain the first spectroscopic determination, in the mid-IR rest-frame, of both the star-formation rate and black hole accretion rate histories of galaxies, reaching lookback times of 12 Gyr, for large statistically significant samples. Densities, temperatures, radiation fields, and gas-phase metallicities will be measured in dust-obscured galaxies and active galactic nuclei, sampling a large range in mass and luminosity, from faint local dwarf galaxies to luminous quasars in the distant Universe. Active galactic nuclei and starburst feedback and feeding mechanisms in distant galaxies will be uncovered through detailed measurements of molecular and atomic line profiles. The SPICA’s large-area deep spectrophotometric surveys will provide mid-IR spectra and continuum fluxes for unbiased samples of tens of thousands of galaxies, out to redshifts of z ~ 6.

We present 5 38µm mid-infrared spectra at a spectral resolution of R � 65 130 of a large sample of 22 starburst nuclei taken with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show a vast range in starburst SEDs. The silicate absorption ranges from essentially no absorption to heavily obscured systems with an optical depth of �9.8µm � 5. The spectral slopes can be used to discriminate between starburst and AGN powered sources. The monochromatic continuum fluxes at 15µm and 30µm enable a remarkably accurate estimate of the total infrared luminosity of the starburst. We find that the PAH equivalent width is independent of the total starburst luminosity LIR as both continuum and PAH feature scale proportionally. However, the luminosity of the 6.2µm feature scales with LIR and can be used to approximate the total infrared luminosity of the starburst. Although our starburst sample covers about a factor of ten difference in the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio, we found no systematic correlation between the radiation field hardness and the PAH equivalent width or the 7.7µm/11.3µm PAH ratio. These results are based on spatially integrated diagnostics over an entire starburst region, and local variations may be “averaged out”. It is presumably due to this effect that unresolved starburst nuclei with significantly different global properties appear spectrally as rather similar members of one class of objects. Results are presented for [CII] 158 micron line fluxes observed with the Herschel PACS instrument in 112 sources with both starburst and AGN classifications, of which 102 sources have confident detections. Results are compared with mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer and with L(IR) from IRAS fluxes; AGN/starburst classifications are determined from equivalent width of the 6.2 micron PAH feature. It is found that the [CII] line flux correlates closely with the flux of the 11.3 micron PAH feature independent of AGN/starburst classification, log [f([CII] 158 micron)/f(11.3 micron PAH)] = -0.22 +- 0.25. It is concluded that [CII] line flux measures the photodissociation region associated with starbursts in the same fashion as the PAH feature. A calibration of star formation rate for the starburst component in any source having [CII] is derived comparing [CII] luminosity L([CII]) to L(IR) with the result that log SFR = log L([CII)]) - 7.08 +- 0.3, for SFR in solar masses per year and L([CII]) in solar luminosities. The decreasing ratio of L([CII]) to L(IR) in more luminous sources (the "[CII] deficit") is shown to be a consequence of the dominant contribution to L(IR) arising from a luminous AGN component because the sources with largest L(IR) and smallest L([CII])/L(IR) are AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We investigate the emission properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in various metallicity environments with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. Local giant HII regions are used as references as they enable access to the distinct interstellar medium components that contribute to the mid-infrared spectrum of star-forming galaxies: photodissociation regions (PDRs), photoionized gas, stellar clusters, and embedded regions. Three objects are considered, NGC3603 in the Milky Way, 30Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. From the variations of the PAH/14um ratio, we find that PAHs are destroyed in the ionized gas for a radiation field such that [NeIII]/[NeII]>3. From the variations of the PAH/Hu-alpha ratio, we find that the PAH emission sources in the giant HII regions follow the same photodestruction law regardless of metallicity. We then compare these results with observations of starburst galaxies, HII galaxies, and blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs). While the integrated mid-infrared spectra of BCDs are reminiscent of a warm dusty ionized gas, we observe a significant contribution to the PAH emission in starburst galaxies that is not arising from PDRs., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The spectrum of HV 2310, an evolved star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, taken with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope reveals the presence of an optically thin shell of silicate dust with unusual spectral structure in the 10 um feature, with an emission peak at 9.7 um, a saddle at 10.4 um, and an extended shoulder to 11.2 um. This structure is similar to spectra from crystalline silicate grains, and of the available optical constants, forsterite provides the best fit. The first observations of the infrared spectrum of the LMC planetary nebula SMP83 as observed by the recently launched Spitzer Space Telescope are presented. The high resolution R~600 spectrum shows strong emission lines but no significant continuum. The infrared fine structure lines are used, together with published optical spectra, to derive the electron temperature of the ionized gas for several ions. A correlation between the electron temperature with ionization potential is found. Ionic abundances for the observed infrared ions have been derived and the total neon and sulfur abundances have been determined. These abundances are compared to average LMC abundances of HII regions to better understand the chemical evolution of these elements. We present observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 7714 with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra yield a wealth of ionic and molecular features that allow a detailed characterization of its properties. NGC 7714 has an HII region-like spectrum with strong PAH emission features. We find no evidence for an obscured active galactic nucleus, and with [NeIII]/[NeII]~0.73, NGC7714 lies near the upper end of normal-metallicity starburst galaxies. With very little slicate absorption and a temperature of the hottest dust component of 340K, NGC 7714 is the perfect template for a young, unobscured starburst, Comment: To appear in the special ApJSS issue on early results from Spitzer

We report the detection of the unidentified emission feature at 21 microns in infrared spectra of eight post-AGB objects in the Magellanic Clouds. This is the first detection of the feature in extragalactic objects. The observations were made by the IRS instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope, as part of multiple observing programs. The eight new detections are considerable, given that only 15 post-AGB objects in the Galaxy have been identified with 21-micron features. The infrared spectra with 21-micron features in the Magellanic Clouds tend to show stronger emission from the accompanying aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features than those in the Galaxy do. The dust in the new objects also generally appears to be hotter, which might imply that they have not evolved as far from the AGB as their Galactic analogues. The 21-micron features are weaker on average than in the Galactic objects, although two of the objects do show strong features. We present the Spitzer spectra of these objects as well as the available ground-based optical and near-infrared photometry and some preliminary results from radiative transfer models.
