В статье представлен случай клинического наблюдения инвазивного микоза, обусловленного редким дрожжевым возбудителем − Blastobotrys adeninivorans, у пациентки с острым лейкозом. Основным фактором риска развития инвазивного микоза был длительный агранулоцитоз. Диагноз установили на основании повторного выделения культуры гриба из крови. Проведенная антимикотическая терапия была неэффективна., The article presents a case of clinical observation of invasive mycosis caused by a rare yeast pathogen − Blastobotrys adeninivorans, in a patient with acute leukemia. The main risk factor for the development of invasive mycosis was prolonged agranulocytosis. The diagnosis was established on the basis of repeated isolation of the fungal culture from blood. The conducted antimycotic therapy was ineffective.

The fatty acid (FA) profiles of two strains of the yeasts Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Blastobotrys (Arxula) adeninivorans at cultivation temperatures from 15 to 30 °C were characterized. Besides the common even-numbered C16 and C18 FAs, substantial proportions of the uneven-numbered C17:1 were found in both species. C18:3(n-3) (alpha linolenic acid) made up to 3% of the total FAs in all strains. Considerable strain differences occurred, with regard to both the presence of single FAs and parameters like the double binding index (DBI) and C16:C18 ratio. W. anomalus J121 formed C18:1(n-5) (up to 10.9% of the total FAs) but no C18:1(n-7), whereas in W. anomalus VKM160, no C18:1(n-5) was found but up to 14.6% C18:1(n-7). Similarly, B. adeninivorans CBS 8244 formed exclusively C18:1(n-7) (maximum 9%) and CBS 7377 C18:1(n-5) (maximum 12.6%). W. anomalus J121 had the lowest DBI (0.72) at 15 °C and the highest (0.92) at 20 °C, at which point the values decreased with increasing temperatures. In W. anomalus VKM160 and both B. adeninivorans strains, DBI was highest at 15 °C and decreased with increasing temperature. In J121, the C16:C18 ratio was highest at 15 °C, decreasing at higher temperatures, whereas in the other strains, the opposite trend was observed.

The fermentation process for Puer tea, a unique Chinese tea produced by microbial activities, was investigated by physicochemical and microbial analyses. The temperature of a windrow-shaped pile of tea leaves increased instantly at the beginning of fermentation and stayed at around 50 degrees C until day 35, then decreased gradually to room temperature at the end of fermentation, at day 50. Water content was approximately 30% or less, and pH value was maintained at a weakly acidic level of 5 to 6 throughout the fermentation, conditions that are favorable for propagation of fungi including yeasts. Polyphenol, the characteristic component of tea leaves, decreased continually from day 10 to day 50 of fermentation, corresponding well with the fact that the total concentration of fungi steadily increased during the same period. PCR followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis revealed that there were at least two major fungi: Aspergillus niger, which has been well known among Puer tea manufacturers, and Blastobotrys adeninivorans, which is newly recognized in the present study. Furthermore, both of these fungi were observed in the DGGE fingerprint when other commercial Puer tea products were analyzed. These results prompted us to deduce that both A. niger and B. adeninivorans play important roles in the nutritional enhancement of tea leaves during Puer tea fermentation.
