Traits, like nurture are rarely associated with men. When considering occupations that require care, men are, thus, often excluded. This exclusion maintains restrictive gender roles for both men and women and contributes to worker shortages in healthcare, elementary education, and domestic, household and childcare-related (HEED) occupations. Previous research on male interest in HEED has focused on the role communal values play. However, this fails to acknowledge the impact of masculine identities. Specifically, how anti-queerness motivates men to avoid HEED careers. Because these occupations are seen as feminine, and men who pursue these careers are stereotyped as gay, men’s masculinity is under threat. This research aims to examine the role the threat one may potentially be seen as queer (i.e., queer threat) plays in men’s HEED interest. Specifically, we propose that queer threat moderates the relationship between men’s communal values and their interest in nursing. Men will view nursing ads containing (or not) queer symbols and indicate their communal values and nursing interest.

The current study examines whether communal values and attitudes about HEED careers are significantly different before vs. after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a larger project, participants from several countries completed a broad survey on gender roles, beliefs, values, and career preferences before COVID-19. After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our collaborators were given the opportunity to collect another dataset recruiting new students from the same universities and departments. Using multi-level modelling on the data from universities that are represented in both the pre- and post-COVID samples, we will examine whether there are significant differences in communal values and attitudes about HEED careers between these two timepoints after controlling for demographics, and examine whether we can show suggestive evidence of links to COVID.

In two previous studies, we find evidence that presidents’ Trump election (at the time of his inauguration) had a negative impact on those who felt they were targeted by Trump’s rhetoric during his campaign (e.g. women and non-heterosexual individuals). The current study examines the effects of Trump’s loss against Biden. At two different timepoints - right before the 2020 election and right after the 2020 election was called - we recruited samples of racial minority participants from the Prolific Academic platform, who self-reported feelings of fit, identity, and threat within American society. The aim of the current study is to examine to what extent feelings of identity, fit, and threat are different in minorities surveyed before the 2020 election was called (October 29th/30th, 2020) vs. after the election was called for Biden (November 4th/5th, 2020).

Past research documents a clear link between gender role norms and young men and women’s interest in divergent careers. Generally, individuals are more likely to take on careers that they perceive as normative for their own gender. However, past research has focused primarily on heterosexual populations, and has not considered in depth whether mainstream norms might have different, possibly weaker, effects on career decisions among LGBTQ+ populations. There is some preliminary evidence suggesting that non-heterosexual individuals endorse less traditional gender roles and might make less gender-normative career choices themselves. In a sample of heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual individuals from 46 countries (after exclusions), we collected data on participants’ sexual orientation, their own injunctive gender role norms of who should enter HEED and STEM careers, their perceptions of others’ injunctive norms for HEED and STEM careers, and well as their own interest in these careers. We examine whether non-heterosexual (compared to fully heterosexual) individuals endorse less traditional gender role norms and show a weaker relationship between their perception of mainstream norms and their own career interests – possibly especially in countries where homosexuality is relatively highly accepted (i.e., in countries where homosexuality is not accepted, non-heterosexual people might still stick to highly stereotypic career choices). The attached document details all our key hypotheses and analysis plans.
