Abstract

Elastic scattering of photons from 12C has been investigated using quasi-monoenergetic tagged photons with energies in the range 65 - 115 MeV at laboratory angles of 60 deg, 120 deg, and 150 deg at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. Abstract

We probe the real space electronic response to a local magnetic impurity in isovalent and heterovalent doped BaFe2As2 (122) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The local moments carried by Mn impurities doped into Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2(Co-122) and BaFe(As1-xPx)2(P-122) at optimal doping induce a spin polarization in the vicinity of the impurity. The amplitude, shape and extension of this polarisation is given by the real part of the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers, and is consequently related to the nature and strength of the electronic correlations present in the system. We study this polarisation using 75As NMR in Co-122 and both 75As and 31P NMR in P-122. The NMR spectra of Mn-doped materials is made of two essential features. First is a satellite line associated with nuclei located as nearest neighbor of Mn impurities. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the shift of this satellite line shows that Mn local moments behave as isolated Curie moments. The second feature is a temperature dependent broadening of the central line. We show that the broadening of the central line follows the susceptibility of Mn local moments, as expected from typical RKKY-like interactions. This demonstrates that the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers does not make significant contribution to the temperature dependent broadening of the central line. chi'(r) is consequently only weakly temperature dependent in optimally doped Co-122 and P-122. This behaviour is in contrast with that of strongly correlated materials such as underdoped cuprate high-Tc superconductors where the central line broadens faster than the impurity susceptibility grows, because of the development of strong magnetic correlations when T is lowered. Moreover, the FeAs layer susceptibility is found quantitatively similar in both heterovalent doped and isolvalent doped BaFe2As2.

Abstract

For this work, we took the opportunity of the European research program “GrapeGen06”, focused on the study and the preservation of grapevine genetic resources, to contribute to the establishment and improvement of such an European catalogue. The comprehensive survey aims at two objectives: to support the implementation of European regulations on propagation of grapevine plants within the EU, and to assess priority actions, by technical and research institutes, for the conservation of grapevine genetic resources.

Abstract

International audience; The genomic revolution have been the starting point for the renewal of attention on the extent of natural occurring variation in many plants species. In this regards, the use of genetic diversity in grape may greatly improve our understanding of quantitative economically important traits. Genetic resources for grape are very numerous, in particular in Europe, but the exact extent of diversity is still difficult to know. In the scope of the European GrapeGen06 project, research institutes and grapevine collections from 17 countries of Europe, Caucasus and North-Africa are working together for the characterization and management of grapevine genetic resources, including wild accessions of Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris. The initial work consisted of inventorying and describing the varieties in the partners’ collections, using standardized morphological, agronomic, and molecular descriptors, and to link the information into a unique European web-database. The project is in particular focusing on old autochthonous varieties. The database website, numbering more than 25000 accessions, is open for consultation, with different levels of access that allows in-dept searches but also confidentiality, according to the user needs. At the end of 2010, the fingerprint data will also be online, so that other collections or professionals can check their own varieties against the referenced varieties to verify names and true-to-typeness. The final objective of the European project is to promote an optimized conservation scheme of the Vitis germplasm, involving ex-situ, cryo- and on-farm conservation, so that the resources are permanently maintained, easily accessible and field-tested in a pertinent agricultural context. This network of resources will also provide plant material as a basis for biotechnology, genomic and breeding research.

Abstract

The magnetic order resulting from a confinement-adapted Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange between magnetic moments in the metallic phase of a AlAs/Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As quantum well is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. This coupling mechanism involves magnetic moments and carriers (holes), both coming from the same Mn(2+) ions. It leads to a paramagnetic, a ferromagnetic, or a canted spin phase, depending on the carrier concentration, and on the magnetic layer width. Abstract

Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) is a disorder characterized by a cyclic pattern of motor phenomena and EEG changes (mostly arousals), both recurring at approximately 20- to 40-s intervals. The periodicity of the PLMS phenomena recalls the physiological EEG arousal rhythm of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep known as the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP). During CAP, arousals and arousal-equivalent features do not appear as isolated events but periodically intrude (phase A) between intervals of background EEG activity (phase B). Though the A phases can be expressed by a variety of EEG patterns, each with a different arousal impact on polygraphic parameters, overall CAP is a sequence of biphasic cycles reflecting a condition of unstable sleep. Twelve middle-aged PLMS subjects complaining of poor sleep were polygraphically compared with 12 age-matched and gender-matched healthy volunteers (controls). With respect to controls, the PLMS recordings showed an enhancement of the more powerful arousals and presented significantly increased amounts of CAP time (+45 min) and CAP rate (+15%). Of all the jerks detected in NREM sleep, 92% occurred in CAP, with the great majority of limb movements (96%) associated with phase A. Ninety-four percent of the nocturnal jerks coupled with phase A started jointly with the onset of the phase or when the latter had already begun. In particular, most of the myoclonic events (67%) occurred in the first 2.5 s of the A phase. The CAP cycles coupled with periodic movements were significantly longer than those without motor events (+6.4 s). Compared to the American Sleep Disorders Association's rules for scoring EEG arousals, the CAP framework offers a more extensive insight into PLMS. In effect, the present study indicates an entrainment of nocturnal myoclonus by means of CAP and sheds light on the complex interactions between arousal mechanisms and motor phenomena during sleep.
