Abstract

The level structure of 60140Nd80 has been established up to spin 48 by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy by use of the Zr96(Ca48, 4n) reaction. High-fold γ-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. Twelve new rotational bands have been discovered at high spins. They are interpreted as being formed in a deep triaxial minimum at 2 0.25 and γ 35°. Possible configurations are assigned to the observed bands on the basis of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

High-spin states in 124,125,126Xe have been populated in the reaction 82Se(48Ca, xn) 130-xXe and γ-ray coincidences were measured with the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer. Twelve new bands extending into the spin 50-60 ℏ region are identified in 125Xe and 126Xe and previously known rotational bands at low spins arc confirmed and extended. Earlier known structures in 124Xe are confirmed and a new band is observed. Irregular structures are identified at the top of the yrast and a side band in this nucleus. Configuration assignments for the different structures are suggested.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; High-spin states in 124Ba were populated using the 64Ni(64Ni,4n)124Ba reaction at beam energies of 255 and 261 MeV. Gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the EUROBALL detector array.The charged-particle detector array DIAMANT provided channel selection. The previously known rotational bands are extended to higher spins. Five new bands are observed, one of them extends up to the spin 40 \hbar region.

Abstract

International audience; The Euroball-IV \gamma -detector array, equipped with the ancillary charged particle detector array DIAMANT was used to study the residues of the fusion reaction $^{64}$Ni + $^{64}$Ni \Rightarrow $^{128}$Ba at E_{beam} = 255 and 261 MeV, in an attempt to reach the highest angular momentum and verify the existence of predicted hyperdeformed rotational bands. No discrete hyperdeformed bands were identified, but nevertheless a breakthrough was obtained through a systematic search for rotational ridge structures with very large moments of inertia J(2) \ge 100 {\mathchar h}^2 MeV^(-1), in agreement with theoretical predictions for hyperdeformed shapes. Evidence for hyperdeformation was obtained by charged particle + \gamma -ray gating, selecting triple correlated ridge structures in the continuum of each of the nuclei, $^ {118}$Te, $^{124}$Xe and $^{124,125}$Cs. In 7 additional nuclei, rotational ridges were also identified with J(2) = 71--77 {\mathchar h}^2 MeV^(-1), which most probably correspond to superdeformed shape. The angular distributions of the emitted charged particles show an excess in forward direction over expectations from pure compound evaporation, which may indicate that in-complete fusion plays an important role in the population of very elongated shapes.

Abstract

In recent attempts to search for exotic shapes, hyperdeformation (HD), and Jacobi transitions in Hf, Ba, Xe, Sn and Nd nuclei, ridge structures presumably originating from nuclei of very elongated shapes have been observed in 126Ba, with Gammasphere (GS) and in 126Xe, with Euroball-IV (EB-IV). After the promising results from GS, a second experiment in 126Ba followed at EB-IV, taking advantage of the use of the BGO Inner Ball (IB) for selecting the highest spins. The decay of the Giant Dipole Resonances (GDR) is also studied, and the analysis in progress. The Quasi-continuum transitions in the Jacobi region, show a significant decrease in energy for both 126Ba and 126Xe, compared to the Thomas-Fermi- and the LSD model predictions. Similar effects were recently found for other nuclei by Ward et al.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The ultimate search for hyperdeformation (HD) at high spins with the EUROBALL spectrometer was performed for 126Ba as a hyper long (HLHD) experiment. The DIAMANT ancillary detector was used to tag \gamma -rays in coincidence with the emitted light charged particles. Using \gamma -energy correlation methods, the particle--xn-\gamma data have been analysed to search for hyperdeformed structures in the corresponding residual nuclei. Data in coincidence with one \alpha particle indicate the presence of normal deformed collective bands up to very high spins and the possible occurrence of HD-like ridge structures in 122Xe.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL, Also available at http://th-www.if.uj.edu.pl/acta/; International audience; The shell structure of the nucleus implies the existence of magic numbers. Since several years many indications have been accumulated, theoretically as well as through experiments at various laboratories around the world, that if one moves away from stability, the location of the magic numbers shifts as an inescapable consequence of the evolving nature of the nuclear force itself. In this respect, it is the balance between the tensor and spin-orbit components that seems particularly instrumental. Illustrative examples from recent experiments at Ganil, at the neutron-rich and proton-rich side of the nuclear chart for N or Z equal 20 or 28, will be presented here.
