Abstract: An experimental program is currently underway at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to compress deuterium and tritium (DT) fuel to densities and temperatures sufficient to achieve fusion and energy gain. The primary approach being investigated is indirect drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF), where a high-Z radiation cavity (a hohlraum) is heated by lasers, converting the incident energy into x-ray radiation which in turn drives the DT fuel filled capsule causing it to implode. Previous experiments reported DT fuel gain exceeding unity [O.A. Hurricane et al., Nature 506, 343 (2014)] and then exceeding the kinetic energy of the imploding fuel [S. Le Pape et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 245003 (2018)]. We report on recent experiments that have achieved record fusion neutron yields on NIF, greater than 100 kJ with momentary fusion powers exceeding 1PW, and have for the first time entered the burning plasma regime where fusion alpha-heating of the fuel exceeds the energy delivered to the fuel via compression. This was accomplished by increasing the size of the high-density carbon (HDC) capsule, increasing energy coupling, while controlling symmetry and implosion design parameters. Two tactics were successful in controlling the radiation flux symmetry and therefore the implosion symmetry: transferring energy between laser cones via plasma waves, and changing the shape of the hohlraum. In conducting these experiments, we controlled for known sources of degradation. Herein we show how these experiments were performed to produce record performance, and demonstrate the data fidelity leading us to conclude that these shots have entered the burning plasma regime.

Abstract: The BABAR Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) has been efficiently operated for six years since the start of data taking in 1999. Due to higher than expected background levels some unforeseen effects have appeared. We discuss: a shift in the pedestal for the channels of the AToM readout chips that are most exposed to radiation; an anomalous increase in the bias leakage current for the modules in the outer layers. Estimates of future radiation doses and occupancies are shown together with the extrapolated detector performance and lifetime, in light of the new observations. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker of the BABAR experiment is a five-layer, double-sided AC-coupled silicon microstrip detector operating on the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. After more than four years of running, the silicon sensors and the front-end electronics in the inner layer have absorbed radiation doses up to 2 Mrad. In this paper we present results from radiation hardness tests and discuss the implications of the absorbed radiation dose on the Silicon Vertex Tracker lifetime. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BABAR experiment at SLAC is a crucial tool to measure with precision the decay position of B mesons produced in the PEP-II electron-positron collisions. It is structured in five layers made of double-sided, AC coupled silicon microstrip sensors. In this paper, a review of some of the technical solutions chosen in the detector design phase is presented. In particular, we focus here on those elements which turned out to be sources of problems during the installation and the first few years of operation; the solutions adopted to solve the problems are presented together with recommendations and proposals for alternate future designs. Abstract: The silicon vertex tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at PEP-H is described. This is the crucial device for the measurement of the B meson decay vertices to extract charge-conjugation parity (CP) asymmetries. It consists of five layers of double-sided ac-coupled silicon strip detectors, read out by a full-custom integrated circuit, capable of simultaneous acquisition, digitization, and transmission of data. It represents the core of the BaBar tracking system, providing position measurements with a precision of 10 mu m (inner layers) and 30 mu m (outer layers). The relevant performances of the SVT are presented, and the experience acquired during the construction, installation, and the first five years of data-taking is described. Innovative solutions are highlighted, like the sophisticated alignment procedure, imposed by the design of the silicon tracker, integrated in the beamline elements and mechanically separated from the other parts of BaBar. The harshness of the background conditions in the interaction region required several studies on the radiation damage of the sensors and the front-end chips, whose results are presented. Over the next five years the luminosity is predicted to increase by a factor three, leading to radiation and occupancy levels significantly exceeding the detector design. Extrapolation of future radiation doses and occupancies is shown together with the expected detector performance and lifetime. Upgrade scenarios to deal with the increased luminosity and backgrounds are discussed.

Abstract: The BABAR silicon vertex tracker (SVT) has been in operation for four years at the PEP-II electron-positron storage ring. During this time the SVT modules have accumulated a radiation dose up to 2 Mrad. We study the degradation in the performance of the SVT due to this accumulated dose which is highly non uniform across the device and also within the individual silicon detectors. To extrapolate the performance of the device to the future we study separately the effect of the irradiation on silicon detectors, front end integrated circuits and on a complete detector module under controlled radiation conditions, using a(60) Co source and a 0.9 GeV e(-) beam. We compare the results to the data from the SVT. In particular we show the dependence of the charge collection efficiency on the radiation dose even when a small stripe of the module is irradiated up to space charge sign inversion. Since the modules that are located in the plane of the beams will suffer significant radiation damage, we will describe our plans for their replacement in 2005 and for the operation of the SVT through the lifetime of the BABAR experiment.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is an essential component of the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory. The SVT has performed very well and several radiation studies have been carried out to determine that it will continue do so up to integrated radiation doses of 5 Mrad. The SVT radiation monitoring and protection system consists of silicon PIN-diodes, which are suffering from radiation damage, reducing their precision. Diamond sensors are highly resistant to radiation damage and the possibility of replacing the PIN-diodes with diamonds is currently under investigation. Two polycrystalline diamonds have been installed near the BABAR interaction region and show promising results when compared to the PIN-diodes. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory is a crucial element of the BABAR physics program. The SVT is a five layer device with double-sided silicon strip detectors and a custom readout chip based on a time-over-threshold circuit. The SVT is fully operational since the installation in the experiment in 1999. We briefly review the detector performance after more than 3 years of data taking in factory mode. The high-luminosity running of PEP-II through the end of the decade will increase the radiation level in the SVT above its design limit. Radiation issues will be reviewed and results from radiation tests of the various detector components will be presented. We finally discuss the outlook for the long-term running of the SVT. It represents the crucial element to precisely measure the decay position of B mesons. The SVT architecture is shown and its performances, like hit resolutions and efficiencies, are described. Radiation issues are discussed and the alignment procedure for the SVT is described. As an example for the physics performance the B lifetime measurement, including B vertex reconstruction, is shown. Results from radiation hardness tests are discussed, which indicate satisfactory operation up to 5 Mrad of accumulated radiation. Abstract: The silicon-vertex tracker (SVT) for the BaBar Experiment at the PEP-II Asymmetric B Factory at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), is a five-layer double-sided ac-coupled silicon-microstrip detector. It is a crucial element for the precise measurement of the decay position of B mesons, satisfying the severe constraints imposed by the accelerator design, in terms of geometry of the interaction region and conditions of operation. In the following paper, the SVT performance is described. Radiation issues are discussed and the results of different tests aimed to study the decrease in the SVT performance due to radiation damage are presented. The alignment procedure is described, and a few BaBar physics results are presented as examples of the SVT capabilities to reconstruct decay vertices with good resolution and efficiency.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory is a five-layer double-sided, AC-coupled silicon microstrip detector. It represents the crucial element to precisely measure the decay position of B mesons and extract time-dependent CP asymmetries. Abstract: Within its first year of operation, the BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) has accomplished its primary design goal, measuring the z vertex coordinate with sufficient accuracy as to allow the measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in the neutral B-meson system. The SVT consists of five layers of double-sided. AC-coupled silicon-strip detectors of 300 mum thickness with a readout strip pitch of 50-210 mum and a stereo angle of 90 degrees between the strips on the two sides. Detector alignment and performance with respect to spatial resolution and efficiency in the reconstruction of single hits are discussed. In the day-to-day operation of the SVT., radiation damage and protection issues were of primary concern. The SVT is equipped with a dedicated system (SVTRAD) for radiation monitoring and protection, using reverse-biased photodiodes. The evolution of the SVTRAD thresholds on the tolerated radiation level is described. Results on the first-year radiation exposure as measured with the SVTRAD system and on the so far accumulated damage are presented. The implications of test-irradiation results and possible future PEP-II luminosity upgrades on the radiation limited lifetime of the SVT are discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. It is read out by a custom IC, the AToM chip, that can simultaneously acquire, digitize and transmit data. The main purpose of the SVT is to accurately measure the decay position of the B mesons that are produced, which is essential for extracting CP asymmetries. Abstract: The BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is a five layer device, made from double-sided silicon strip detectors and read out via a custom time-over-threshold circuit, the AToM chip. The SVT is an essential part of the physics program of BaBar, and is able to reconstruct B meson decay vertices with a precision sufficient to measure time-dependent CP violating asymmetries at the PEP-II asymmetric e + e − collider. This report will give an overview of the SVT, with particular focus on the performance of the SVT, which has been taking colliding beam data since May 1999.

Abstract: We present improved measurements of the branching fraction B, the longitudinal polarization fraction f(L), and the direct CP asymmetry A(CP) in the B meson decay channel B(+)->rho(+)rho(0). The data sample was collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. The results are B(B(+)->rho(+)rho(0))=(23.7 +/- 1.4 +/- 1.4)x10(-6), f(L)=0.950 +/- 0.015 +/- 0.006, and A(CP)=-0.054 +/- 0.055 +/- 0.010, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Based on these results, we perform an isospin analysis and determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase angle alpha=arg(-V(td)V(tb)(*)/V(ud)V(ub)(*)) to be (92.4(-6.5)(+6.0))degrees.

Abstract: Targeted liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) technology using size exclusion chromatography and metabolite profiling based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to study the nickel-rich latex of the hyperaccumulating tree Sebertia acuminata. More than 120 compounds were detected, 57 of these were subsequently identified. A methylated aldaric acid (2,4,5-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-1,6-hexan-dioic acid) was identified for the first time in biological extracts and its structure was confirmed by ID and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. After citric acid, it appears to be one of the most abundant small organic molecules present in the latex studied. Nickel(II) complexes of stoichiometry Ni-II:acid = 1:2 were detected for these two acids as well as for malic, itaconic, erythronic, galacturonic, tartaric, aconitic and saccharic acids. These results provide further evidence that organic acids may play an important role in the transport and possibly in the storage of metal ions in hyperaccumulating plants.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker of the B a B ar experiment is a five-layer, double-sided AC-coupled silicon microstrip detector operating on the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. After more than four years of running, the silicon sensors and the front-end electronics in the inner layer have absorbed radiation doses up to 2 Mrad. In this paper we present results from radiation hardness tests and discuss the implications of the absorbed radiation dose on the Silicon Vertex Tracker lifetime.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory consists of five layers of double-sided, AC-coupled silicon strip detectors. The detectors are readout with a custom IC, capable of simultaneous acquisition, digitization and transmission of data. The SVT geometry is shown and the construction phases of its modules are described in detail, with emphasis on the bending procedures needed for the arch-modules of the outer layers.
